Chapter 626: Investigating the Truth
"Liqin, what are you doing here?" Du De suddenly felt guilty. Though she dared to say those words, she only said them because she thought that Liao Liqin had left with Luo Huian. She never thought that he would suddenly return.
Liao Liqin glared at Du De. He furiously typed on his phone, and a second later, a mechanical voice echoed in the silent surroundings. "Du De. Oh, Du De. I never thought that this was what you thought of me. All these years, I helped you. It was my family who provided you with a scholarship and helped you by getting into such a prominent college, and you dared to say that I was the one clinging to you? I have been helping you out because I believed that you were the one who saved my life when I was a kid."
"But now I believe that it wasn't you. It can never be you. That little girl was kind and sweet; she even put her life in danger for the sake of saving mine. There is no way you could be that selfless."
As soon as the words finished echoing in the silent resting room, a flash of guilt flickered in Du De's eyes. Even though it was fleeting, Liao Liqin caught it. His heart, which was filled with anger and a raging fire, suddenly turned cold. He couldn't believe that all these years, he had never questioned Du De and the loopholes in her story.
The most important one being why would the kidnappers kidnap a child of farmers? What good would it do to them? Yet maybe because he was that desperate to have someone who cared for him more than others cared for his twin brother, he accepted it all without questioning it at all. Now that the truth was in front of him, he couldn't blame anyone but himself.
He closed his eyes and exhaled heavily. He should have doubted—no, he should have asked this question long ago. In fact, his twin brother did tell him that he shouldn't trust Du De with his eyes closed, but Liao Liqin's jealousy gripped him so tightly that he didn't like his twin brother questioning Du De.
He scolded his twin and told him to stop bothering him. As a result, his twin brother, who was only trying to look out for him, stopped trying to make him see sense. But now that he had caught Du De's foxtail, Liao Liqin felt his face burning. How could he have missed the signs?
Du De also noticed that her reaction was not appropriate and immediately said to Liao Liqin, "How can you say that? Liqin. I admit that I did say something wrong just now, but that was due to anger. But you cannot just ignore the risks that I have taken for your sake."
Now that Liao Liqin's heart had calmed down, he didn't allow Du De to guilt-trip him. He exhaled heavily before typing, "We will see. In the past, I never doubted your words — but now that I do, I am going to investigate the matter carefully."
Du De's expression changed; she stared at Liao Liqin with shock in her eyes. But before she could say anything, the mer turned around and handed Brother Du the baby bag that they had taken with them mistakenly. He then left without waiting for Brother Du to say anything.
"Liqin." Brother Du called out to the mer, but when Liao Liqin didn't stop, he could only turn to look at his sister and snapped at her, "What was the meaning of that?" He was a mer as well and understood Liao Liqin's anger quite well. At the same time, he couldn't help but feel a bit guilty and regretful. Liao Liqin had indeed helped their family countless times. It could be said that Liao Liqin was the benefactor of their family. Without his help, they would still be trapped in the small countryside. It was Liao Liqin who helped him and his sister by giving them the education that their parents could not provide. If Liao Liqin had not stepped in, then he would have never gotten a chance to meet his wife.
Now, Du De had offended this benefactor of their family greatly. The more Brother Du thought about it, the more uncomfortable he became. He said to Du De, "Ah De, when did you change so much? You used to be grateful to Liqin. Even if he did you a small favour, you would thank him profusely, and now you actually said such words to ruin his reputation. Don't you think you were a bit harsh just now? If his wife had heard your words, she would have divorced him."
No matter how kind Luo Huian was, she was, in the end, a woman. And no woman or man would withstand their husbands getting chummy or close with another woman with whom they had no relationship. Du De was quite lucky that it wasn't Luo Huian, or else things would have turned truly problematic.
Du De was indeed panicked inside, but she didn't show it on her face. She scoffed, "What can she do to me? It's not like I have said something wrong. That mer was indeed clinging to me. And now that his wife had gotten better and more successful, he dumped me, even bringing up such an old matter to prove that he is in the right, humph. As if."
After she finished speaking, she walked away without looking at her brother.
Brother Du parted his lips as he wanted to say something to his sister, but before he could bring himself to say anything, his sister had already walked away. His wife also pulled him back and shook his head.
"Why are you stopping me?" Brother Du asked with a frown. He said to his wife, "I need to talk to her, this kind of foolishness – how can she even think of such messy things? Is she not worried about offending both the Luo and the Liao families?"
"There is no point in talking with her," Sister Ruan sighed. She looked at her sister-in-law, who had long driven away after getting into her car. She turned to look at her husband and said to him, "Even if you try to speak to her at this moment, she will not listen. Haven't you seen it already? Your sister has long changed and become way too arrogant."
"Even if you try to tell her that what she is doing is wrong, she will not listen. If anything, she will think that you are interfering in her life."
It wasn't that Sister Ruan wanted to abandon Du De heartlessly, but that woman was way too far gone. After coming to the city, the naive girl had changed and turned quite scheming. In the village, she was the only one who awakened as a hunter; thus, she was quite proud of this little accomplishment. However, when she arrived at the city, she realised that there were all kinds of phoenixes and dragons crouching here.
How could a little D-ranked hunter stand among them? Because of this, she grew twisted and cruel.
Brother Du was Du De's brother; thus, he would obviously not see anything wrong with his sister, and even if he did see something, he would ignore it all. Because, as her biological brother, he could never accept such a small thing as there being something wrong with Du De's character.
Brother Du pursed his lips. He had to admit that what his wife said was indeed correct. But that didn't make him happy. If anything, he felt even more upset. Du De... since when did she change so much? He still remembered that his sister was a kind and naive girl when she was young, but how come she suddenly turned so blunt and heartless?
Even calling Liao Liqin a shameless vixen when the mer had done nothing other than helping them and their family.
While Brother Du was worried about the attitude of his sister, Du De was worried about Liao Liqin investigating the happenings of the past. The truth was indeed just as Liao Liqin guessed. She was not the one who rescued him. When she found Liao Liqin, the mer was lying on the forest ground unconscious. Next to him was a young girl, but because the young girl was lying a bit far from Liao Liqin, she didn't see her appearance other than her rose-pink hair.
Later on, the police officers, along with the medics, came. When Du De saw that Liao Liqin's parents were dressed quite well, she immediately tore her clothes and covered her face with mud to make the bold claim that she was the one who saved him.
Because the scene was a mess, no one doubted her claim, as they didn't think that a child around her age could do such a thing. But now that Liao Liqin had brought this matter up and threatened her with a proper investigation, she was really worried. She had to come up with a plan, or else things would go downhill for her very soon.
