Chapter 8: Interrogation
David was pulled away from the Church as he followed the Paladin to a small garden where Alexandra was residing.
She was sitting by a small table pouring out tea for herself and for whoever would sit beside her, which David guessed was him.
"Uhm- oh yeah." David sat down and gave an awkward smile towards Alexandra which was hard as she was just absolutely gorgeous, even more breathtaking up close.
No hair was out of place nor blemish upon her skin. It was like she was molded to be a perfect model.
Which made sense since she was a Saint.
"Good afternoon aha."
Alexa smiled and carefully slid the tea towards David. "Good afternoon to you too, David Ben Salo. And Happy Birthday~ an 18th Birthday is so special, I'm sorry it had to be accompanied by an attack. How are you feeling?"
"Oh me? I'm fine. Yeah just you know, a bit rattled. Thank you for the greeting though, it means a lot to me."
What he really wanted to say was that he fought them off with style and relative ease.
He drank from the teacup, immediately noticing that it was a little sweet and creamy; it must have been an English Breakfast.
"You're welcome~ and since it's your 18th Birthday, you gained your System right? May I see what it is?"
"U-Uh sure!" David quickly brought out the Cleric System, watching as Alexandra took a closer look at it, even stepping towards him.
David's cheeks turned a little red as he tried to look away.
"Oh? A Cleric Class? How wonderful, you can join the Amaranth then, wouldn't that be lovely?"
"Yeah, that sounds nice. I've never really thought about where to go actually."
"Well, we welcome you with open arms. Now then, aside from Awakening, can you tell us what happened while you were on the stage when it exploded? Did you notice anything or anyone strange? Anything out of place?"
"Calculating. Presence of Skill [Truth Field] has been found, be warned."
"Mission Added: Find a way to not reveal your System and involvement while in the Truth Field. Accomplishing this mission shall reward you with the base [Shura Stealth Set]."
"Well, when the attack happened, I hid behind some rubble and saw the demons come up. And I snuck away, thankfully, before I could get really injured. There was also this white knight paladin guy who everyone mentioned, they were really powerful, and helped everyone out. Then I found my mother after the Chasm Entrance closed, and now, well, I'm here."
He gave an awkward smile, not knowing how to respond. Technically speaking everything he said was the truth. He never once lied, now the only problem would be-
"Did you interact at all with this white paladin?"
If she asked questions like that.
Technically si,nce he was the white paladin, he should be able to interact with himself.
Interacting with oneself essentially just means handling yourself and people do that all the time.
"Well, yes. But not for long, just right before I met with my mother."
Which was true, the fighting was a few minutes long and was before he went to his mom.
Alexandra waved her hand, activating her screen as she nodded along. "Understood, and do you think you would know where he is? Right now he's the only person missing that was directly involved with the incident."
It felt like everything slowed down. It was hard to answer a question like this, since it's him he would know where he was, but then they'll ask him where he is and then they'll have him!
"Well, I'm sure someone like that would go around and do his best to try and protect others."
So he opted on not answering the question properly, instead creating a scenario that he could comment on truthfully.
"Hmm, alright then. Well, if we have any more questions, we will reach out to you once more, understood? If you still have any lingering injuries somehow, you can always ask for any healing."
She gave another warm smile which almost caused David to blurt out the truth. But he held it in and simply nodded along.
"T-Thanks! You too, uh stay safe!" He got up quickly and walked away, sighing to himself for a bit on how embarrassing that was.
"Mission Accomplished. Granting base [Shura Stealth Fiend Set]."
Suddenly, a small window opened up in front of David it showcased a sleek ninja-like get-up with a dark face mask on that resembled a demon.
Fitted for sneaking and maintaining silence, this set completely muffles the noise that the user makes while also camouflaging them entirely.
"Woah, wonder what the stats on them are."
He looked down at the stats, noticing that none were above E except for Speed which was E+.
"A little underwhelming compared to the [Blaster Set], but it looks like it has more items."
[Grappling Hook]
A hook that can be used to anchor into ledges.
[Rope]
A 50 foot rope.
[Chloroform Glove]
A glove doused in chloroform that would be able to subdue targets who inhale it.
[Fiend Sickle]
A black and sleek sickle that can be easily wielded with one hand.
"Real ninja build, that's so cool. Huh… I wonder why they had a truth field around us? That doesn't seem… that right? We're not exactly criminals are we?"
"The Amaranth takes demon attacks very seriously, after all, everyone who is killed by a demon becomes one in the Chasm."
A shiver shot through his spine as he recalled one of the most devastating things about demons.
Whenever you were killed by one, no resurrection could save you as they would literally take your soul and pull it to the Chasm, and there you are, reincarnated as a demon, forever.
"Oh… yeah I uh, forgot about that. I guess if there was a chance that someone here knew the truth, they would try to grab at it the best they could."
He walked back to the church, Mary wasn't there anymore, she must have been called for questioning as well.
So ,to fill in the time, he decided to fill in the levels he had gained from his quests.
David opened the menu, he gained ten in total, and obviously the best place to put them was in Strength and Speed.
[Health E: 5/5]
[Mana E: 5/5]
[Durability E: 1]
[Mental Defense E: 1]
[Resistance E: 1]
[Strength E: 6]
[Speed E: 6]
[Intelligence E: 1]
[Will Power E: 1]
[Resolve E: 1]
[Charisma E: 1]
[Luck E: 1]
Instantly he felt himself energized as his whole body glowed.
David jumped up and down, noticing there was a more spring to his step. He then ran around the church, not feeling winded at all.
It was a start, but he was going to have to do even more quests to get more levels to Rank up his attributes.
"Hey, do you have any quests available at the moment?"
"No, I do not. Those shall be given appropriately. I shall inform you when they are available."
"Wait what? Don't Systems have a set of pre-made quests that need to be completed?"
Usually ,a System would already have a quest, such as a teacher might need to have a certain number of students to pass an exam they have given.
Or a Mage would need to create a spell from what they can already do.
"Yes. Other inferior Systems. This is more dynamic, allowing for an easier leveling up experience."
David sighed and rubbed his head. "I guess that's alright… now it's just time to wait."
For a while he did nothing, taking this moment to rest and relax, he actually almost fell asleep, dosing off until somebody shook his shoulder.
"Hey~ wake up sleepyhead."
Opening his eyes, he found both his mother, Elizabeth, and Mary beside him, looking down with a smile.
But then he noticed a third person approaching: Alexandra.
She strode up to the three of them and spoke. "David Ben Salo, I would like to continue our conversation."
