Chapter 11: Contract Signing
David and Elizabeth stood in awe and wonder as they watched the glory of what was before them.
They were barely able to make out words as Marcus helped them slowly walk out of the doorway and into the lobby.
"What… is this place…"
"It's marvelous, simply magnificent, dare I say divine."
"This is simply one of the churches of the Amaranth, or rather, one of the churches hidden in another dimension. We use them as bases of operation for special missions such as the ones you will be going on."
He began to usher them into the room that the knights were headed towards.
In it, the group saw a grand room filled with racks of weapons across the walls alongside mannequins with armor standing around.
Actually, not mannequins, but robots, heavily armored wielding black rifles.
Several knights seemed to be looking at maps across the table that seemed to animate themselves, acting as if it were a game where you can zoom in and interact with it.
David stared at it for a while before he got a message from Thamiel.
"Leyline Structure Found. Synthesizing is available here."
"Oh nice, figured they would build a leyline into this place. It just breathes magic."
Marcus turned to him, narrowing his eyes as David felt another shiver down his back.
Quickly he followed along, saying nothing as they entered into a small closed off room with its own armory on the side as well as its one map table in the middle.
In the room, a familiar face was waiting for them, that being Mary who was clutching her staff.
She stood up with a smile on her face as she saw David and the others enter, waving her hand excitedly.
"You're finally all here- ah! Long time no see Bastion."
The robot butler bowed its head down. "Ah, Missus Mary, good morning to you! You've grown to be a fine young lady."
"Awww, thanks Basti, hope you're doing well."
"Never better! The young David finally has gotten out of his room and into the real world, and all on his own choosing too. I could never be more whirring with excitement."
David awakedly scratched his head and looked away while Elizabeth and Mary laughed.
"I hope this start will go well, this is a brand new start for all of us."
Elizabeth's pleas were heard by Marcus as he closed the door behind them all, walking to the center of the room as he accessed the map.
"That is our hope as well. We need to quell this danger before any more public disturbances arise."
The map under his fingers began to zoom in onto one of the many abandoned zones outside of the city, full of empty buildings that were once apartment complexes.
"Your first mission, if you choose to accept it, would be to investigate this point. There were reports of demonic energy emanating but no signs of Chasm Entrances."
Everyone leaned it to see that the abandoned complex had turned into a veritable jungle with how much the plants have overtaken it.
"You will first sign a contract before you continue, then you will be given basic training on what to do and how to handle demonic encounters."
Marcus walked over to the armory, revealing several rifles, pistols, even snipers, grenades and so much more.
It was surprising still that at the end, there were all these ornate swords simply hanging beside them.
"All of these have been heavily enchanted by our Artificers and created by our Engineers. Each one with the potency of at least E to D Rank. Be careful with them."
David quietly raised his hand.
"Yes?"
"Well, why do you all still have swords if you have guns? Doesn't that seem rather, uhm ineffective? Sorry if I sound rude."
"No, don't be, I think it's ineffective as well, but it's more tradition than anything else really, they are rather powerful, and those at the very top well…"
He grabbed a sword to raise it into the air, slashing it down so fast that it disrupted and distorted the space it hit.
"It wouldn't matter what firearm you would have; it would be far too ineffective compared to the skills on top."
Everyone stood still for a few moments, in awe of the display of power before Marcus went back to the map.
"You will all be given standard issue armor as well corresponding to your roles, as well as training on the skills and powers you hold according to your class. Are there any questions?"
Everyone shook their heads in unison.
"Good."
Marcus then produced the contract from his inventory, placing it on the table while also giving out a quill for everyone.
"It will write in your own blood when you use it, don't worry it's not painful, it's simply binding."
He looked to David first, offering the magical quill. "Shall you be the first?"
Without any hesitation, he took the quill and nodded.
"I shall."
