Chapter 79: What is mana?
Fira was quite ashamed and embarrassed as she really had lost herself in his eyes. It would definitely be considered weird for only a friend's relationship. Seeing how he had joked, she knew she had escaped.
However, she did find him much more attractive with that look in his eyes.
After being done with their conversation, Arthur decided to return to his room and grind once again. He only had the last part of the Elvish language book left to learn. Fira had also complimented that he was very close to fully learning almost everything, and then he would only need to practice to get fluent in it.
'Hopefully, from tomorrow, I will start learning the magic I have been waiting for.'
He studied the book until dinner and finished it by that time. After going to the dining hall, he quickly finished that meal had some chat with Fira to practice, and then left as he had to train his body too, and a bit of his control of mana.
A bit later than yesterday, around 2:30 AM, Arthur had been done with all the tasks. Now after taking a refreshing shower, he finally slept peacefully.
He woke up around 10 AM as he hadn't realized he was more tired than he had thought. Quickly leaving for the dining hall in a hurry to get his breakfast, after finishing his meal in the company of Fira.
But today he was not worried about working in the mine as it was Saturday. He leisurely finished the delicious pudding she had prepared for him. He talked to her in Elvish for about even more than an hour this time.
He left afterward. Now he was confident that even when his Elvish wasn't perfect, he should be able to read the books.
'I am very excited to see what I would learn today.'
Arthur quickly reached his room and closed the door completely. He took out the black pouch from around his neck. Using his mental energy, he took out the three books Fira had given him.
They dropped on the floor, and Arthur didn't even try to catch them, knowing how heavy they were.
Bam!
Bam!
Bam!
Like the last time, he couldn't differentiate between the three books, but this time he didn't apply enough force to hurt his nail, and on the third try, a book opened.
There was no table of summary, no context, none of those things in this book. From the first page, it started in very refined handwriting. He knew it must be Fira's mother's handwriting.
'I gotta say her handwriting was very good.'
He preferred her writing over the printed books he had read earlier where everything seemed machine-like.
He took a deep breath and started reading it.
"What is Mana?"
Only after reading the first sentence, which was in the form of a question, did Arthur fall into thought about his mana.
'I have awakened first. I couldn't even feel much with my low resonance. However, after I copied Fira's talent, I can feel mana everywhere around me.'
'It's everywhere. I can feel it even in solid things, but I can't draw that mana out. I can even see it a bit—it's a blue magical energy, but when I try to control the mana in the atmosphere, I wasn't able to do it.'
So what really is mana?
'It is a magical energy that you can control to do anything you desire, which means practically bending reality.'
That was what Arthur could think of. He moved on to see the answer she had written.
"Mana is the breath of the world—shapeless, invisible, yet present in all things. It responds to will, not force; to intention, not impulse. To channel it is to converse with the fabric of reality itself."
"Mana is not power—it is potential. It flows through all living things, yet only those awakened to its current can shape it. To wield mana is to harmonize with existence itself, and in doing so, bend reality's threads."
Arthur read everything.
'It responds to will, not force; to intention, not impulse.'
'Last night I tried to make an arrow out of mana. However, whenever I tried to control it to make the second one, the first one disappeared. I put all my focus on forcing it to stay in that form.'
He did make that second arrow but only for a few seconds, but his goal was to make multiple arrows at the same time, which would shoot at the enemy.
'However, I failed at the first part of creating the multiple arrows.'
It used much more mana, so he couldn't practice for long, and even when his mana recovered very fast, he felt it was a bit lacking as he had to wait for 4-5 minutes for it to fully recover when it reached 5, as he stopped there.
Because he knew from Fira that losing all your mana wasn't a good thing, and his body also gave signs of that through fatigue.
Now after reading these two passages, he decided to try it again.
He willed mana from inside his body to outside. He didn't try to control it like usual and just guided it by his will to come out. He noticed the difference very quickly—how quickly it came out and how much easier this felt than before.
'Wow!'
Now he tried to make the same arrow. He didn't try to control it like the last time and just willed and guided the mana. The arrow was made much faster than before—it didn't even take a second for it to create. He even felt it used much less of his mental energy.
'This is so amazing!'
He kept providing the mana to the first arrow and then moved to the second, and much easier than before, he succeeded in making it on the first try. He didn't stop as he felt like he could do more.
Only after making a whole six arrows at the same time did Arthur feel that he wouldn't be able to maintain it for long due to his mana being spent at a faster rate than it could recover.
But suddenly a thought appeared in his mind which made him smile gleefully.
'Why didn't I ever think of that?'
