Chapter 76: The Contract
"If you don't believe me then..." He paused for a second then continued.
"I know you are very good at magic, so do you know some kind of magic that can help you determine if I am telling the truth or a lie? You can use that on me. You have my full permission."
Arthur's tone of voice was filled with confidence, his back straight as he looked directly at her with conviction.
Fira, who had just thought he was doing all this to hide his embarrassment, was now shocked by the words he had said just now. His words seemed confident and he was telling her to use magic that could determine if he was lying or not.
If she did that, there would be no room for any lie here, but she didn't know any kind of magic that could determine if he was lying or not, which could detect truth or lies. It may sound simple, but that was a unique kind of magic, which few individuals with that talent could use.
The talent could vary, but it could determine falsehood. She only knew one person who had that kind of talent. She had met her when she was little. Even her mother had said that the child was very special, which explained how significant this talent of hers was.
She was the daughter of the current merchant association leader, but that was only relevant to her because the child her mother had praised, whom she had met only one time. A few years back the current leader's mother was the only vice leader of the association, which was a very big position on its own.
Explaining how capable the previous vice leader or the current leader was, but she still couldn't become the leader. But rumor had it that it was only because of her youngest daughter, Raveyn Thornviel she did become the head of the association.
'I know that was not just rumors, as she really was behind that change of power in the association.'
The rumors of her controlling the Association from the shadows were likely true also.
During the change, she launched quite a few interesting things in the Elven Empire which were big hits in the Empire due to their practicality and function.
One of those things was the contracts she would sell, which were quite unique, and their function was not far from the original version. But those contracts were either created through nature or by high-ranking mages who had grasped bits of the laws of the world, which was why they were super expensive.
When someone filthy rich like her said it was super expensive, that meant it was genuinely very expensive. Ordinary mages could never even lay their eyes on one in their lifetime.
But this new contract, which had made quite an uproar in the Elven Empire and even across many other planets in the universe, had made her quite a big celebrity, and the power she held at such a young age was immense.
Basically, the contracts which are made through nature are the highest form, and just below it were people who could make them using the law of the world. But she knew they couldn't just make them whenever they wanted to. If that was possible, it wouldn't have been so extremely rare.
But she added a third category. They are not as powerful as the ones before that would bind the person's soul in the process, like the ones made using the law of the worlds by high-ranking mages, or the ones born out of nature, which the world held witness to. She didn't know how the first kind would work, but that was what her mother had told her.
However, the ones made by Avalyn Thornviel made were different and less powerful, but they were effective. They would bind the person using both their manas, and if the other party broke the contract, they would lose all their current mana, which may sound bad to hear, but it would only result in them regressing one rank in their magical cultivation.
It was not a small thing for anyone, as they would lose so much of their hard work. Some mages could even lose their thousands of years of hard work, or some may lose only a few years, but it was a great tool to have if they were used strategically.
Detecting the lie from the truth was one of the things it could be used for.
Fira wouldn't lie—she was quite jealous of her sometimes when she heard her story from her mother and even the way her mother praised her as if she was not her own daughter.
'I know Arthur only had a little amount of mana to begin with. Even if he loses it, it would recover after some time, and he had only Awakened, so he had no risk of falling down cultivation rank as he had no cultivation, to begin with. He would either fall unconscious due to complete mana loss.'
She knew it was not completely safe, but with her being here, she wouldn't let him get hurt. She would take care of it before it happened.
It looked like a perfect tool for such a scenario.
"Alright, I will use an item that would tell if you are telling the truth or not."Fira said to him
She explained to him how it worked, and she took out a parchment which had a strange mana circle on it of black color.
She also took out a mana potion and gave it to him with the parchment and told him if he felt lightheaded to quickly drink it.
The preparation was ready, and now there was only one thing left, which was to use the contract.
But before that, she asked him once again.
"Arthur, are you sure you really want to do that?"
Arthur, hearing her, quickly replied with a direct "Yes!" as he finally had the chance to completely erase the delusion she had of him.
She instructed him on how to use the contract. For him, he just had to drop his blood on the contract and state the term that he would tell no lies for the next one minute, which would suffice.
She had thought he would be scared to cut himself, as he was only a regular person his whole life, so he was not used to fighting or seeing blood.
But he exceeded her expectations by using the knife on the table in front of him to make a small cut on his thumb without even making a sound.
Which was the part that surprised her the most.
