"Those bastards!" Issei shouted, his voice filled with indignation, after the dodgeball match.
He shuddered, recalling how they had repeatedly targeted his—sensitive areas.
If he had been injured, his dreams of a harem would be shattered.
He turned to Mika, his eyes filled with gratitude.
"What's this about?" Mika asked, taking a step back, confused by Issei's sudden display of affection.
"Thank you for teaching me, Mika!"
Mika nodded, understanding now. If not for his training and the Martial arts he had taught Issei, he might have been seriously injured.
After all, their opponents had been quite—enthusiastic in their targeting.
"It's nothing. You did all the work yourself," Mika said with a dismissive wave, not accepting his gratitude.
After all, mastering Martial arts required self-discipline and effort.
Although Issei's method involved being repeatedly beaten until the techniques were ingrained in his muscle memory, it was still his accomplishment.
"That was fun!" Rias stretched languidly, having thoroughly enjoyed the match.
As the primary attacker, she had been able to unleash her full power.
"Indeed," Koneko agreed, a hint of amusement in her usually monotone voice.
The Occult Research Club had won the tournament, which wasn't surprising.
The Student Council, after all—wasn't officially a club. If Sona and her peerage had participated, their victory wouldn't have been so easy.
"Let's celebrate! Like a normal club would," Akeno suggested. "How about a barbecue?"
They all looked at Rias, eager for her approval.
"A barbecue? Excellent idea! We'll have it outside the old school building. How does that sound?"
"A barbecue! I'm in!"
"Perfect! A barbecue is just what we need!"
"An outdoor barbecue!" They cheered, excited.
"Then let's split up and gather the supplies," Rias declared, always decisive.
And so, having just finished one competition, they began preparing for another, a celebration under the stars, commemorating their small, but memorable—Victory.
....
With the ball games tournament over, life at Kuoh Academy returned to normal.
And with it, their Devil duties resumed. Issei and the others were once again busy fulfilling contracts.
Mika, however, remained—unburdened.
He sat atop a skyscraper, attuned to the flow of demonic energy under the moonlight, observing the city.
Rias hadn't assigned him any Devil work since their return from the Rating Game. She knew he didn't rely on the Underworld's system.
As a traveler between worlds, he sought knowledge and power from different universes, integrating them to forge his own unique path.
The Devil's power was sufficient for his research in the Underworld.
Therefore, Rias gave him free rein.
While Akeno and the others were puzzled by her decision, they trusted her judgment.
After all, Rias treated her peerage like family.
And given her—special relationship with Mika, there was no way she would harm him.
Although they tried to hide it, Akeno had noticed their growing closeness.
Therefore, they didn't question Rias's decision, focusing on their own duties.
"He's here…" Mika murmured, opening his eyes, the wind whipping through his hair. He hadn't used his [Observation Haki] to confirm, but his [Danger Sense] was screaming.
He was being cautious; after all, this was Kokabiel, a Fallen Angel Cadre, a survivor of battles against Satans and Gods.
He couldn't be too careful, even though he had been easily defeated by Vali in the original story.
After all, who was Vali? descendant of the original Lucifer—and the strongest White Dragon Emperor in history.
He was far beyond the level of an Average Satan or God. For Kokabiel, who was among the strongest below Satan-class—being defeated by Vali wasn't surprising.
Therefore—Vali was an opponent he couldn't currently match.
"Now that Kokabiel's here, how will things unfold? My actions have caused several deviations from the original story."
"Firstly, the Stray Exorcist who appeared earlier should have reappeared during Kokabiel's plan, wielding multiple Holy Swords against Yuuto and the others. But I killed him."
"Secondly, the Occult Research Club was supposed to visit Issei's home after cleaning the old school building, where Yuuto would be triggered by seeing a photo of a Holy Sword at Issei's house. But we were at the Gremory villa during the cleaning, so that event didn't happen."
"Therefore, the plot has changed significantly!"
"But none of that matters." He looked towards the source of the unsettling feeling, the direction from which the danger emanated.
"Regardless of the changes, Kokabiel's arrival is inevitable. My task is to eliminate him once he reveals his plan. The rest is irrelevant."
....
After sensing Kokabiel's presence, Mika returned to his usual routine, suppressing his presence at school and focusing on his training afterward.
His life was once again calm and peaceful.
Until one night, an urgent message came through the communication device he had given Issei, a device enchanted with a communication spell, allowing Issei to contact him anytime, especially during their training. While Issei had used it frequently at first, it had been silent recently.
"Mika, are you there?" Issei's voice was filled with anxiety.
Mika opened his eyes. "What is it, Issei?"
"Two people from the Church just arrived at my house. They seem—dangerous. My mom said it's Irina Shidou, a childhood friend, but—she doesn't feel familiar at all. And they know I'm a Devil."
"I understand." Mika's calm voice reassured Issei. "I'm on my way. I'll be there soon."
"Thank you, Mika!"
"Don't worry." He ended the call and stood up. "Although I doubt they'll attack, I can't ignore Issei's call." He smiled slightly and vanished from the rooftop.
…
"Whew…" Issei breathed a sigh of relief, setting down his communication device. Contacting Mika had calmed his nerves.
"Are you alright, Issei?" Asia asked, concerned.
"I'm fine, Asia." He had been worried about the two individuals from the Church attacking them.
He knew about the conflict between Devils and the Church. He wasn't sure if he could protect Asia, or if his parents would be caught in the crossfire.
But knowing Mika was coming reassured him. He knew Mika lived nearby. At his speed, he would arrive in minutes.
"Asia, stay upstairs. I'll handle this," he instructed.
"But…"
"Don't worry, Mika will be here soon."
"Then—please be careful." Hearing Mika's name, Asia relaxed. Among Rias' peerage, Mika was the most reassuring presence. With him around, she had no doubts about Issei's safety.
"Stay here." He headed downstairs.
In the living room, his mother was chatting with Irina Shidou. Issei sat beside her silently, feeling a gaze on him. It was from Irina's companion, a beautiful, blue-haired woman. Her cold stare unnerved him, despite her beauty. She seemed—dangerous.
Suddenly, Mika's voice echoed in his mind. "Issei, I'm here, on your roof. Don't worry. I'll protect you."
"Mika!" Issei's anxiety vanished, replaced by a surge of confidence.
The blue-haired woman noticed the shift in his demeanor and subtly nudged her companion.
"We should be going now," Irina said to Issei's mother.
"It's getting late." Sensing her companion's signal—she quickly ended their conversation and left, disappearing into the night.
....
....
"What's wrong, Xenovia?" Irina asked once they were a safe distance away.
Xenovia didn't answer immediately but scanned their surroundings. Sensing no immediate threat, she relaxed slightly and turned to Irina. "Your…Devil friend seemed quite nervous when we arrived. But suddenly he felt relaxed. I suspect his companions are nearby."
"I see," Irina nodded. "Given our mission, we shouldn't risk a confrontation with Devils."
"Indeed. Though I wouldn't mind a little—sparring match," Xenovia said, a hint of disappointment in her voice. "I thought they might pursue us. Turns out they're cowards."
"I'm no coward."
"Who's there?!" Xenovia's eyes widened as she heard the voice behind her. Her instincts kicked in, and she spun around, her greatsword already in her hand, swinging it with all her might.
"....." Her attack was abruptly stopped by a single finger...
It was Mika, leaning casually against a wall.
"No way...!" she exclaimed, stunned.
Her sword, Excalibur Destruction—a Holy Sword specifically enhanced for destructive power, had been stopped by a single finger.
And she could sense the demonic aura emanating from Mika.
Holy Swords were incredibly effective against Devils, who usually couldn't even touch them.
Yet, he had effortlessly blocked her attack...
