"Xenovia!"
Seeing Xenovia attack and be stopped, Irina Shidou, who had already prepared herself when Mika spoke, immediately swung her own Holy Sword at him.
Her Holy Sword was the Excalibur Mimic, capable of transforming into any shape.
She used this ability, the blade extending into a whip that lashed out at Mika.
He tilted his head slightly, dodging the attack, which struck the wall behind him, shattering the concrete with a loud crack.
Xenovia, startled by the sound and still reeling from Mika effortlessly blocking her attack, leaped back.
"Are you alright, Xenovia?" Irina asked, rushing to her side.
"I'm fine." Xenovia nodded, her gaze fixed on Mika.
"Who are you?"
"Just a Devil with—a certain interest," he replied casually, hands in his pockets.
"Don't play coy with us!" Xenovia snarled, his nonchalant attitude infuriating her.
"Oh, are you angry now?" Mika's smile didn't falter, but his demeanor shifted, a subtle edge entering his voice.
"I was curious about the presence of Church members in our territory. After all, you did frighten my—junior quite badly."
"You're Issei's companion?" Irina, realizing the reason for the confrontation, stepped forward.
"We have no intention of fighting you at this time. Besides, we've already contacted the Sitri clan and have a meeting scheduled with the Gremory family tomorrow. Therefore, a confrontation now would be—unproductive."
Xenovia and Irina had come to Kuoh Academy on an important mission and didn't want to risk a conflict with the local Devils beforehand.
"You've contacted the Sitri clan?" Mika nodded. As the two dominant Devil factions in Kuoh Academy, the Gremory and Sitri clans worked together, the Sitri-led Student Council handling daytime affairs, while the Gremory family managed things at night.
Therefore, it made sense for Xenovia and Irina, who had arrived during the day, to contact the Sitri clan first.
However, since Kuoh Town was Gremory territory—any official business had to be conducted with them. Hence, they needed the Sitri clan's introduction.
"So that's why Rias wasn't at the clubroom tonight. Sona summoned her." He now understood the sequence of events and the timing.
His memories of the original story were hazy; after all—it had been years (and several worlds) since he had last seen the anime. He only remembered the major plot points.
'I need a way to remember everything clearly,' he thought.
"Since you're not here to cause trouble, I won't stop you. I was only curious about your intentions. You were the ones who attacked first," he said, turning to leave.
"Wait! What's your name?" Xenovia called out.
Although their earlier exchange had been brief, it was enough to make her wary. His ability to neutralize her Holy Sword's power against Devils was unsettling.
But Mika simply waved dismissively, his voice echoing from the shadows.
"We'll meet again—tomorrow."
"Tsk." Xenovia clicked her tongue, her expression serious.
"Xenovia?" Irina looked at her, concerned.
"Irina, it seems we've underestimated the Devils."
"Indeed." Irina nodded, recalling Mika's power.
…
"Mika!" Issei, who had been anxiously scanning the street outside his home, rushed over to him.
"Are you alright?"
"They're just two little girls from the Church. How could they harm me?" Mika chuckled.
"That's good! As expected of you, Mika!" Issei sighed in relief, placing a hand on his chest. "I was worried when I heard the commotion. After all, they're from the Church."
Weaker Devils were inherently wary of those affiliated with the Church, as the power of light was incredibly effective against them.
Stronger Devils could use their own power to counter it, but weaker ones lacked the necessary magical power. Issei, when he first met Asia, had felt a chill run down his spine just by approaching the church.
"I'm not afraid of Angels or Fallen Angels," Mika said confidently.
"Head back inside. Asia must be worried. Don't worry about those two. They weren't here to target you; it was just a coincidence. Rias and I will handle it."
"Understood."
Mika vanished.
....
Soon after he returned to his apartment, Rias arrived. He relayed the events of the evening.
"So that's what happened…" Rias frowned. Based on his description, the two wielders of Holy Swords were likely the Church representatives she was scheduled to meet with tomorrow.
This made her wary. She didn't want to cause a conflict with the Church, potentially sparking another large-scale war.
After all, the Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels had been locked in a bitter conflict for eons, countless lives lost on all sides.
While large-scale battles had ceased, smaller skirmishes still occurred.
As the younger sister of the strongest Satan, her actions were constantly scrutinized, especially any interactions with the Church.
"It seems I'll have to…improvise," she said with a sigh, biting her fingernails.
"Don't worry. I'll be there to support you," Mika reassured her, pouring her a cup of tea.
"Just follow your instincts. There's no need to hesitate."
"With you by my side, I feel…stronger," she said, looking at him with affection.
Mika smiled and leaned in, kissing her gently.
They fell back onto the sofa, their embrace deepening.
....
The next day, Mika and Rias arrived at Kuoh Academy early. However, instead of going to the Occult Research Club, Mika sought out Yuuto.
"Yuuto, come with me. I need to talk to you."
"It seems you have something…important to discuss." Seeing Mika's serious expression, Yuuto followed him.
They found an isolated corner.
"Rias asked me to…prepare you for something," Mika began.
"What is it?" Yuuto's voice was barely a whisper. He suspected he knew what Mika was about to say. After all, there was only one thing that required such—preparation.
"We're meeting with representatives from the Church today. They're Holy Sword wielders."
"Holy Sword wielders…" Yuuto's face twisted in a grimace of rage.
"Holy Swords…"
"Excalibur—" He spat the words out, his body trembling with barely suppressed fury.
Under Mika's watchful gaze, he slowly regained his composure.
"I understand. I won't cause any trouble for Buchou," he said, his voice hoarse. "I…need some time alone. When are they arriving?"
"During lunch break."
"Then I'll be going now." He turned and walked away, his steps heavy.
Mika sighed. Rias had asked him to warn Yuuto, fearing the presence of Holy Sword wielders would trigger him and cause him to act rashly. After all, he harbored a deep-seated hatred for the Church and for Holy Swords, especially Excalibur.
Yuuto was a survivor of the [Holy Sword Project]—a program that had scarred him deeply.
Holy Swords were weapons used against Devils. A mere touch could burn their flesh, and a direct hit would annihilate them completely, with no chance of resurrection. To the Church, they were the ultimate weapons against Devils.
And among them, the most famous was Excalibur. However, wielding a Holy Sword required immense power and compatibility, a rare combination that emerged only once every few decades.
Therefore, the Church had initiated the Holy Sword Project, gathering children from all over the world, hoping to find suitable wielders. But none of them had been deemed worthy.
Those who failed were—disposed of. They were executed. Yuuto was the sole survivor, rescued by Rias as he lay dying.
That's why he hated the Church, and he hated Holy Swords, especially Excalibur, the symbol of his suffering. His greatest desire was to destroy it.
Mika's memories of the Holy Sword Project were hazy; Rias had filled in the details. She had been worried that the Church representatives' presence would trigger Yuuto, so she had asked Mika to warn him.
"The Church…" Mika mused. While the Holy Sword Project was undoubtedly cruel, it didn't necessarily mean the Angels themselves were inherently evil.
The God of the Bible in this world was considered a benevolent God, His Angels were generally trustworthy. However, he was now dead, and this had created—complications.
To conceal his death, Michael—was using the system he had left behind to maintain the illusion of divine miracles.
However, no new Angels could be created. And after the devastating war against the Devils and Fallen Angels—their numbers had dwindled significantly. They had withdrawn from many of their former territories.
As a result, the human Church was now largely managed by—humans. And humans, as everyone knew, were complex and unpredictable.
Therefore, compared to the more straightforward Devils and Fallen Angels, the human Church was far more—nuanced. While it remained a bastion of holy power, it had lost its former purity.
This was one of the reasons Mika hadn't considered joining the Church. Besides being located within Gremory territory, the Church's…human element had made him wary.
