Chapter 320
BRRR! BRRR!
Sirens kept blaring across the building.
Never have they ever seen horns blaring like that before.
Sure, they went to drills before, but that was not the position they were in. They never thought that one day they would face danger.
What they learned from their seniors was that this building has never come under attack. There were only drills conducted occasionally to keep the guards alert and fit for any emergency, as no one knows how things would turn out in the future.
The greatest asset of this building was that it was not well-known. It was one of the tightly kept secrets of the alliance. Its existence was known to many, but its location was unknown. Very few did, and those who did, whose names were never known to others, except for the Human god, known as Kraken.
The prisoners inside, well, they are well secured. Human rights don't exist here. So, the problems from the prisoners are almost non-existent. They were under suppression during their stay here, so that anyone who was sent here would only stay alive until there was a need to keep them alive.
Once they were used to the fullest extent, they would be sent to the execution block to end their life. Of course, those words are never spoken in front of the prisoners.
To them, it was just another prison with the highest security and no possibility of escaping.
It was why the guards never felt any danger. Though they had to see and can socialise with only a few people, every day, every second, many choose to stay in this position, as it was safer than most jobs out there, and also the pay is very high.
In a world where one is not limited by the limited lifespan of the old world, two or even more decades wouldn't matter much, especially to ones that are limited to Rank-4 or lower.
Not everyone could break through ranks like they were nothing. Unlike Aaron, who has undead, making the clearing of a dungeon dead easy, it wouldn't be the same for others. Even though his skeletons may be limited, he has a lot of them, making it possible to complete the quest without many issues for him.
So, many would settle down as soon as they reach their maximum potential, but settling down is not easy. Settling down means marrying and having children. Taking care of family costs a lot of money.
It was why many hunters would explore the loot dungeons in the city where they had settled down. The loot they would collect is used to exchange for the resources that they want. Although those jobs are considered safer since the dungeons are already covered, there is always a possibility of danger at every corner if they are not careful.
The monsters don't act completely as recorded; they have minds of their own. Even if all their possible moves are recorded, one can't know when they would make their moves, especially when it comes to monsters that are good at sneaking behind enemies.
Also, some anomalies occur occasionally, where the rank of the monsters inside increases for a limited time. Most of the time, it would be just the Boss monster that either mutates or breaks through the rank restriction.
So, there are a few deaths even among the experienced in such situations, much less among newbies. It was why it was always advised to be on alert, even if one was diving into a familiar dungeon that they had gone through a hundred times.
No one can predict what could happen in the next moment.
Well, there are a few professionals who can predict, but they don't usually enter the dungeons like the combat professionals. They were grown using other methods.
So, when jobs like this open up, everyone would be eager to get them and not lose them, even if it meant staying away from others, including their families, for a few years; it was the necessary sacrifice required for the betterment of their families.
Now, a place that was supposed to be secure, a place where the guards were solely responsible for handling minor issues, was facing a great disaster.
---
"What the hell was happening? This place was supposed to be a secret. Why are we under attack?" one of the new guards who arrived less than two years ago cried out in horror.
The guards do change every few years, but not everyone gets changed at the same time, and some stay for a long time, like the one next to the newbie who stayed for nearly three decades.
"Shut it, newbie. One thing you need to understand is that no secret would remain a secret forever. One way or another, the secret would come out. The higher-ups know that fact, and for that reason, protocols exist".
"There are protocols for every situation, and being found by the cults, though it is the worst situation found by the monsters, there are still ways to overcome the situation, and we play a role in that".
"Don't think that the Alliance would be paying top dollar for sitting on your ass and passing meals to the prisoners. Now, get a grip on your emotions as we may need to fight, but don't worry, most of their strength would be buried before they set foot inside", the senior guard encouraged him.
The newbie nodded and got ready to face the danger.
As the senior said, they were not paid to sit on their asses. In this world, danger is everywhere. No place is truly safe, and thinking it was completely safe would be pure stupidity.
---
Inside the depths of the prison, in an isolated room, the man stood up and approached the door as he heard the sirens go off.
Sirens are only used in emergencies and when drills to check response time during those emergencies take place.
This is not a typical workplace where drills are held.
This is a prison filled with the most nefarious ones, and the only reason sirens would be turned on would be if there were an emergency, a real emergency.
The man smiled, "Looks like they are on time. It's time for the next phase of my plan", he muttered and returned to his bed.
