Chapter 306: C266
Everyone straightened up, their spirits renewed.
Batman's next move confirmed Green Arrow's words.
He leapt into the air, the thrusters of his flying device roaring to life as streams of compressed air propelled him upward toward the landing pad on the roof of Stark Tower.
A corpse and a pool of blood marked the rooftop, but Batman didn't spare them a glance. His sharp gaze was locked on the shimmering energy field shaped like an inverted bowl.
At the center of this protective dome was the Tesseract, radiating a dazzling blue light—an object pulsing with infinite, otherworldly energy.
"Huh? What's that human trying to do?"
Some of the Chitauri soldiers had noticed Batman's movements.
On the other side of the space portal, aboard a massive warship orbiting Earth, Chitauri commanders observed Batman's actions through tactical displays.
A sense of foreboding crept in, and the soldiers wasted no time reporting it to their leader.
Seated on his throne within the largest bio-warship, the Chitauri leader watched the live broadcast intently.
His piercing gaze fell upon the scepter gripped in Batman's hand. His expression darkened, eyes narrowing with recognition.
"STOP HIM!" he roared.
The command echoed through the ranks like a shockwave.
Without hesitation, the order was relayed to every Chitauri soldier both on Earth and streaming through the portal.
In an instant, they abandoned their previous battle formations, disregarding the enemy's offensives entirely.
Dozens of Chitauri flyers and soldiers pivoted mid-air, their aircraft screeching as they redirected toward one target—
Batman, standing alone atop the Stark Tower landing pad.
At the same time…
"…Now, it's time to close the door and beat the dog!"
Green Arrow's words had barely faded when he charged forward, fierce determination blazing in his eyes. His companions followed without hesitation.
Whether they were members of the Justice League, elite Special Forces, the brave officers of the New York Police Task Force, or even the lone Avenger on the ground, Captain America—
They fought side by side, united by one purpose:
To defend Earth.
BOOM!
Arrow's explosive arrow struck its mark, blasting a Chitauri soldier out of the sky. The others wasted no time—superhuman abilities unleashed in a coordinated onslaught. They tore into the enemy ranks, triggering fiery explosions as Chitauri aircraft erupted one after another.
For a brief moment, it seemed like they had turned the tide.
But then—
Just two minutes into their offensive, the Chitauri suddenly changed tactics.
Without warning, the alien soldiers and aircraft veered sharply, abandoning the fight as they sped away from the heroes below.
"…Huh?"
General Hawke blinked in confusion, lowering his weapon slightly.
"Did… did we scare them off?"
He wasn't the only one confused. Many fighters paused, exchanging puzzled glances.
The Chitauri weren't retreating aimlessly. Their ships were streaking straight toward Stark Tower, where the space portal loomed above in the sky.
"Something's not right."
Captain Steve Rogers squinted at the retreating enemy, his instincts kicking in.
"If you were in their position," he muttered, "would you retreat right now?"
Hawke hesitated. He knew the answer.
Of course not. The enemy should be pressing the attack, exploiting any advantage to stall for time until reinforcements tipped the balance.
"…It's Batman."
Green Arrow's expression darkened with sudden realization.
"They've recognized the threat. Their target isn't us—it's Batman!"
The truth hit them like a lightning bolt.
"MOVE!" Captain America bellowed, raising his shield.
"We have to support Batman! He MUST close that portal!"
Meanwhile…
The camera feed shifted, focusing on Batman as he soared from Stark Tower's penthouse to the landing pad bathed in the eerie blue glow of the Tesseract's energy beam.
The footage streamed live across the globe.
In command centers, war rooms, and living rooms alike, countless eyes were glued to the screen.
Military leaders, government officials, and terrified civilians watched in breathless silence.
Batman was on the move.
One after another, the military leaders recalled what John Keller had said at the start of the incident.
It seemed Batman hadn't been caught off guard by the alien invasion. In fact, it appeared he had anticipated it—and had a plan in place.
Given Batman's track record, whenever he takes action, victory is usually within reach.
The room seemed to exhale in unison, a collective sigh of relief.
But beyond that, what truly struck these military leaders was the realization of the formidable force Batman had assembled to face this alien threat.
"Since the battle is nearing its conclusion, there's something you all need to know."
The speaker was none other than General Colton, his expression grim.
Colton had been one of the early founders of the special forces unit deployed in Manhattan during this crisis.
Though long retired from active duty, his stature within the U.S. military remained unparalleled. Many of the generals present were his former subordinates or protégés—none dared interrupt him.
As he spoke, the room fell into silence.
Colton picked up a dossier from the table, his tone heavy with significance.
"After thorough investigation and analysis, we've confirmed the identities of several individuals who fought alongside Batman today."
He paused, flipping through the documents.
"In addition to the official members of the Justice League, Batman had the assistance of the following individuals:
Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm."
A few officers exchanged puzzled glances—these names were unfamiliar to most.
But Colton continued, his voice steady:
"The next few names, however, should ring a bell—especially one in particular.
Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk—the same individual General Ross once attempted to capture.
Curt Connors, better known as Dr. Lizard, a former adversary of Batman's.
And the so-called 'Green Goblin,' identities currently unconfirmed, but also linked to Batman's past conflicts."
He flipped to the last page, then added, almost as an afterthought:
"Oh, and there's… a giant rat. Name's Splinter. Apparently, he's the mentor of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
A brief, awkward silence followed. Several officers exchanged bemused looks, collectively choosing to ignore the mention of the giant rat.
"I never expected Batman to recruit his former enemies as allies."
"That takes guts."
"He even managed to bring the Hulk onto his side? Looks like he kept plenty of secrets during the Ross incident."
"Didn't we all suspect that?"
Murmurs filled the room, the volume steadily rising as opinions clashed.
"Enough."
Colton's sharp voice cut through the noise like a blade.
"Reinforcements will arrive in New York shortly. If Batman successfully closes the space portal, this crisis will end swiftly."
He set the dossier down with a firm thud.
"Trust Batman. Fortunately, despite this mess being triggered by the Pegasus Project's failure, S.H.I.E.L.D. will take the brunt of the blame. As for the Avengers, they've proven useless in this situation. The fact that the enemy managed to control minds under their watch only highlights their incompetence. Our deployment of special forces will be enough to balance the scales politically."
A tense pause. Then—
"But once this incident is over, the real question becomes: How do we deal with Batman?"
The room grew heavy with unspoken implications.
Colton continued, his gaze sweeping across the room:
"And another thing—put aside your foolish pride and ambition. Thinking we can replace the Justice League with special forces? That's delusional. After this battle, Batman's reputation will soar to unprecedented heights. No one can take his place."
His voice dropped, becoming even more serious:
"Even though we've maintained a cooperative relationship with Batman—a shared interest, if you will—he's not part of the military. The question we need to ask is this: Can we find a way to bind him more closely to us?"
The room fell into thoughtful silence.
Suddenly, John Keller, the Secretary of Defense, stood up with conviction.
"We may not be able to bind Batman directly," he said, "but we can bind Anton."
All eyes turned to him.
"Anton Jameson is the key. According to our intelligence, he has a deep, personal connection with Batman. The Jameson family has passed rigorous political vetting—they meet all the criteria."
Seeing the puzzled looks around the room, Keller clarified:
"What I'm proposing is this: We submit a request to the President to establish a new special military division—with Anton as its leader.
By doing this, we tether Anton to us. And through him, Batman will be indirectly tied to our chain of command."
Colton frowned, clearly considering the proposal.
"Form a new military division?" he muttered thoughtfully.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"Under what pretext would we justify such an initiative?"
"Aliens!"
Keller's eyes blazed with intensity.
"Everyone knows this isn't the first time aliens have appeared on Earth. As early as the last century, we've encountered Transformers, Kree, and discovered various alien relics scattered around the world—all proof that humanity isn't the only intelligent life in the universe."
He paced slightly, his voice growing more impassioned.
"The world is constantly evolving. Our future lies among the stars. Sooner or later, we'll encounter more alien civilizations. It's better to organize a military division now—one that can establish contact with extraterrestrials, and even facilitate communication, diplomacy, and resource exchanges."
His gaze swept the room, sharp and calculating.
"As far as I know, Batman and his allies possess mysterious intelligence channels. I even suspect they've already established contact with alien visitors long ago!"
A murmur rippled through the room.
"That's a good idea," General Colton finally said, nodding thoughtfully. There was a glint of approval in his eyes as he looked at Koehler.
"In that case, once this situation is under control, we'll hold an internal vote. If it passes, I'll submit the proposal to the President immediately."
"Agreed."
"No objections here."
Several others nodded in approval.
Suddenly, a sharp exclamation cut through the tension.
"Look!"
Everyone's heads snapped toward the large screen as a soldier shouted:
"All the alien troops are converging on Batman! He's in danger!"
"What?!"
Colton and the others leaned forward, their faces tightening with concern.
On the screen, the scene was nothing short of terrifying.
Densely packed alien soldiers and massive biological warships, hovering ominously above Manhattan, had turned in unison—all heading straight for Stark Tower.
The sky seemed to darken under the sheer number of them, like an apocalyptic storm rolling in.
Across the feed, they saw Captain America and his team frantically chasing after the alien forces, launching powerful attacks.
Explosions erupted as several alien soldiers were taken down, and even one of the biological warships was destroyed in a fiery blast.
But it wasn't enough.
The alien army didn't waver. They didn't turn back. Their singular focus was clear:
Kill Batman.
The outer ranks of the Chitauri soldiers became little more than cannon fodder, sacrificed to shield the core forces pressing forward with maximum firepower.
"This isn't good!"
Captain America's face was grim, his jaw clenched.
"We're too late!" he growled, frustration and fear lacing his voice.
Everyone watching knew it, too.
They were too late.
The alien forces moved with terrifying speed, their aircrafts far outpacing anything the ground team could manage. Their mobility and firepower were overwhelming.
Worse yet, every available Chitauri soldier and warship had converged into one devastating formation.
In just moments, Batman would be hit with an unprecedented barrage of ammunition.
If—by some miracle—he survived the initial wave, Captain America and the others might have a chance to reach him, to fight back, to pull him out of danger.
But if Batman didn't survive…
It was over.
Not just for New York.
For the entire Earth.
