Cursed to level 1 with an Ego weapon

Chapter 106: Protecting Astin from invasion [4]

The three beasts are attacking everyone they see, hunting those that attempt to escape from them. These creatures should be around level 25, strong enemies that are made of fire. They look like foxes, but they are not, they are spirits made of the element their bodies are made of and take a natural form.

Normally these are living in volcanos and dungeons underground, they being here makes no sense unless we consider that someone was summoning them, which I bet is the right answer.

"Okay, no water magic… How do I deal with these enemies?" I ask myself while the creatures are approaching. Where are the mages? I cannot see any around here when they could be useful for these kinds of creatures.

Lisa casts her buffs on me, giving me more elemental resistance, which is good for these types of beasts.

I enter into action before they can use their powers with Lisa behind me. I run towards them, to which they react by growling and taking a threatening position. I use [Electric Bolt] to have neutral damage modifiers against them at least. I make sure my cold aura is on. I have only a couple of casts left of that thing and I did not see a book in the stores! But I need to take care of these things soon.

[Fire Sprite Fox is injured(-3258)! It was severely injured!]

Two of my casts hit on two of them. They respond by casting fire spells at me that I start to block with my magic shield. I could attempt dodging, but the leveling [Magic Shield] is important too.

The bolts and balls of fire come from the tip of their tails, they lift them before hurling the spells and with the energy of a bullet they hit against my Shield.

Lisa casts her Smite skill on one of the ones I injured. A sacred light falls on it and forces it to the ground and it complains with a sound that imitates a fox in danger.

That makes another to turn towards her and run while growling.

"Ah!" Lisa yelps and tries to take distance, but trips over her own foot and falls to the ground.

It is Karina the one that defends her. She grabs a nearby table from a stall and hurls it against the fox, the wooden furniture takes it with it and against a wall.

[Fire Sprite Fox died after getting crushed!]

The notification appears on my screen, confirming the first death.

Both foxes that were fighting me notice and turn their attention towards Lisa, who they seem to believe is the one that killed their companion. In response, they start to inhale air.

"Fuck! Lisa, take cover!" I yell.

"Ah!" She reacts, but it takes her a moment to realize she has to get out of the way.

It is not enough time, I jump in front of them after recharging [Magic Shield].

What they are doing is known in the game community as a Noob Killer Game. Dragons have it, but this one works different. From their mouth, a torrent of fire come out and engulfed my shield. I can feel the heat as my spell is making the flames to part away and keep Lisa safe from the fire damage.

And when the spell dissipates…

"Lisa, get out!"

"I-I cannot!" She explains.

The floor is now red hot, like lava it is burning under our feet.

[Magic Shield Blocks some damage!]

[Magic Shield Blocks some damage!]

[Magic Shield Blocks some damage!]

Lisa is on a small island formed because I blocked the first part of the spell. But the floor is the next part of the spell. It is capable of killing players that know little and have little preparation for these kinds of attacks.

"Shit…" I curse. She has to stay for a bit in there before she can freely move one more.

The foxes prepare to cast the same spell once more.

"Lisa! React now and attack with your Smite!" I say.

Without standing up, she starts to pray and asks for Elen and Demisaus to Smite them!

I follow with my spells, casting the electric bolt at them before they can finish casting the spell.

The bolts fly around before hitting the target!

Luckily, they are not hard enemies to kill, but that spell they have is dangerous if they hit you without preparation, so they die under our spells.

"A-are we safe now?" Lisa asks.

I look around and no more monsters seem to be around. Some guards are looking at us in surprise that we killed those beasts.

I suppose that those enemies are a rarity for people that usually don't venture into dungeons and are too far away from the towns.

They are helping people evacuate now from the burning buildings and burnt wood.

"I think we are…"

"Dammit… I am still a failure at combat, aren't I?" She says.

I turn towards her and she is sitting there on the ground.

"What?" I ask her.

"I panicked again… you took that spell for me when I was the reason they used it…" She says, looking around. "I should have stayed in the base with Leiva." She is hugging her knees and looking to the side.

"Do you want to return?" I ask her.

She does not look at me. She just buries her face in her knees.

"Yes… but I want to be helpful too…" She explains. "But I am a burden to you, I can barely stay without panicking and messing up…"

"If you want to return to base, you can. But I still could use your help." I shake my head. "Besides, you are meant to do support, not fight. You cannot say you have been a burden when you are the one using healing spells when we need them."

"Mmmm…" She mutters.

The fire around us starts to dissipate. I sigh. "Come on, get up. We need to find our dragon woman." I answer and help him stand up.
