Chapter 39: Chasing Snowflake
"Continue, we are listening."
Sergeant Kim said, leaning on the chair.
The old surgeon did not hesitate.
"This is how it begins. It all started with that Connect guy, he was kidnapped by our members and I was asked to get his organs, as the only surgeon in the whole gang. On that night, I have successfully opened his chest and got his two eyes, and I'm very sure he was dead that night. I left him on the operating table to attend to something online, but then, this man woke up, his opened chest had closed and he was already walking towards his two eyes on the tray."
The man had a frightened look on his face as he explained.
"I was scared after seeing him because I never knew what he was, so I called the guards for help, and as the guards got in, he quickly got one of his eyes in a hurry and escaped through the window. Once he's gone, I made my research and found out he's something called Connect, and could very well change the scope of our business, so we made it our top priority to get him at all cost."
The man paused for a while, but as Sergeant Kim's cold gaze landed on him, he shivered and continued.
"It was on that same night when I got home that Snowflake visited, he came to me to help, I never knew he was Snowflake at that time so I helped him. He had several bullets in his body and was on the verge of losing his life, so I brought him in and saved his life.
But while I was treating him, I... secretly transplanted Connect's second eye to him."
He said, not daring to make eye contact with the cops.
"Well, isn't that why you were kicked out of National Open University Hospital, exchanging people's organs."
Inspector Ray said. After making countless research and asking around, they found out that the old surgeon was kicked out of the National Open University Hospital because of his strange hobby, exchanging patient's organs, transplanting one person's organ to another.
"I must admit, you got a nice hobby."
Sergeant Kim commented as the man continued.
"I never knew what I did would pose a problem for me, ruin my business and ruin the life of my comrades, more importantly, I never knew what I did that night will be the key for the cops for knowing the identity of the notorious Snowflake."
Both Sergeant Kim and Inspector Ray smiled at the last sentence.
"I never saw him since I saved his life that night, until he came back two weeks ago, only to come and appreciate the help I did with a lot of beating and torture, he took me on a journey to hell and back, and I wish for nothing but death under his torture. He told me I ruined his life instead of saving it, I didn't even know how he found out I changed his eye, it was only last week that I found out Connect could see through his eye I transplanted to Snowflake."
"You mean, Uche could see through Snowflake's eyes, how is that possible?"
Inspector Ray asked, and the man nodded.
"Yes, the eye I transplanted to Snowflake."
"Makes sense, do you remember how we got to know both of them back in that company."
Sergeant Kim asked, now everything made sense to him. The fact that Uche was accusing Kante that day and shouting about his dress, it all made sense now.
"On the second day he arrived at my house, he brought up a topic that caught my interest."
The man continued.
"He talked about Connect, saying the cops are taking him to the headquarters, thinking he was Snowflake. He already knew the importance of this guy to our company, so he asked me to contact the base and tell them about the situation that the cops arrested Connect thinking he was Snowflake and they should bring him back at all cost. I did just that under his command, only to hear the fate that befell my people when he returned back at night."
"He came back that night with a sad face, I didn't know the reason so I thought he was sad because all my people got killed by the cops."
"That bastard, he planned the whole thing, he had total control and we were mere pawns in his game, every one of us including the trafficking ring."
Inspector Ray said with his fist clenched, thinking of how he had almost lost his life during that ambush, only to learn now that they were being played, like a game of chess.
"The whole thing was done by him, the video we received that night, how we got Uche's address, the ambush and how we lost Uche again. He planned everything, but why?"
Sergeant Kim said, his expression thoughtful.
"To use Uche as a bait and get us off his back, thinking we have finally arrested the invincible Snowflake."
Inspector Ray said, and Sergeant Kim shook his head.
"That's not entirely true, if he only wanted to use Uche as a bait, he wouldn't have sent the traffickers gang after us, I can only guess he has something else to do with Uche."
Sergeant Kim said.
"Yes, he had a use for him."
The man said.
"A few days later after the ambush, he brought in those two people with me, tortured them all day and asked questions about this Uche person. Then this night, he went out and brought Connect back with him, unconscious. And that's when everything was revealed after Connect finally woke up."
The man's voice suddenly grew low and turned into a pause, almost like a suspense in dramas, making the cops' curiosity grow as they moved their chair closer to him, their gaze focused.
But just as the man was about to continue, someone rushed into the room, beads of sweat rolling down his head.
"Sir, I think this is for you."
A young officer said, rushing into the room, he dropped a phone in front of Sergeant Kim and Ray.
"Open it."
They did just that and found a message sent to their mail, it was a record and they didn't hesitate to play it after seeing the name of the sender.
"Uche?"
The two men whispered as the record started playing.
They listened to the content with a maximum level of concentration and their expression darkened as it played on.
The old surgeon was the first to be shocked when the record started playing, it was everything they had discussed in the lab. Every single word Snowflake had spoken carelessly was carefully played to the cops now, and their expression darkened as they listened to it.
The record played for almost an hour before ending, and the two men couldn't help but go into an eerie silence.
They couldn't believe what they had just listened to, it felt unreal to them, at the same time, felt as if they had just uncovered a great secret.
The silence stretched for a few minutes before Inspector Ray broke it.
"Are you sure this is not another plan to confuse us."
Inspector Ray asked.
"No, that's exactly what happened in the lab. Snowflake spoke casually and carelessly because he thought we'll all die after getting what he wanted from Connect."
The old surgeon said.
"So, he really had a use for Uche. Interesting, thank goodness we got there in time, the world would've been doomed."
Sergeant Kim commented.
"So what do we do now after learning of all of this."
Inspector Ray asked.
"Go look for Snowflake of course, publish an article of his story to the world, post his pictures everywhere, seal his properties and everything that belongs to him and search for him everywhere, I'm sure he's still in the city, so it shouldn't be hard for us. And more importantly, reward Uche by keeping his secret from the world."
Sergeant Kim said.
"Huh do we still need to look for him? I mean, he'll die in the next few years so why chase him again."
Inspector Ray said with a shrug.
Sergeant Kim stared at him with disbelief clearly written on his face.
"We shouldn't chase him again? Do you know the amount of lives he would reap in that next few years he has to live? And don't you want to kick his butt, you've been chasing him for years and almost lost your life to him."
Inspector Ray smiled.
"Right."
