Chapter 107: She’s so stubborn
"I told you, you shouldn't have met me again!" Hector sighed, staring at Violet with lifeless eyes.
"B-But…" Violet tried to say something, but her throat locked up under Hector's cold gaze.
In the end, she just nodded helplessly and shoved something into Hector's hand despite his resistance. With sad eyes, she quickly ran away.
Hector let out a long breath, watching Violet's figure disappear from sight. Then he felt what she had slipped into his palm and gave a bitter smile.
It was a royal capsule.
"She's so stubborn."
He honestly didn't need something that precious, but it could help him at some point in the next stage of the exam.
As his fingers brushed over the royal healing capsule, he felt her silent support, and a wave of emotion stirred inside him.
He hated himself for it.
"Again. My emotions always crawl into my head whenever she's near."
Luckily, he couldn't see her face. If he could see her with healthy eyes, he had no idea what might happen. Would he dare look straight at her? No. He wouldn't.
He just wanted to keep her away.
"Why does this guilt feel so heavy? Maybe this really is my sickness."
"Everything will be fine once I get that herb. Maybe."
Hector tried to comfort himself with thoughts of his illness. Things would get better. He just had to wait.
He slowly closed his eyes in exhaustion and drifted off again. Leaning against the rocky wall, his body trembled from time to time, as if he was under some kind of curse.
He looked pale and fragile. And from a distance, Violet—who had been watching—was in tears for him.
She felt guilty for her childish actions that had led to Hector's blindness and so many other things. Yet, beyond all that guilt, she also felt the strong threads of connection still binding them together.
Even if she had only known him in dreams, it felt like she had known him for a long time—because the emotions were real.
"My fault. I should've stood by him when he needed me. I haven't even done anything for him after everything he's done for me."
She remembered the day she'd lashed out at him for no reason and walked away, leaving him alone. If she had stayed by his side, maybe he wouldn't have vanished and suffered under Haley's hands.
She already knew the truth, even if Hector never revealed it to her.
Sitting alone, she cried quietly until sleep finally took her, without her realizing when.
Tyrone scratched his head in confusion, because he'd caught most of their story after eavesdropping from the next room when they were still in the academy.
"Well, I shouldn't have told her all that. And now… great, another depressed girl."
He let out a long sigh and began smoothing out the ground beneath him.
"Haizz, just let them be. Who knows? At least I helped push them a little closer."
And just like that, a day passed.
Nothing happened.
Until bad timing arrived.
"Wake up, everyone. I smell blood. Strong, fishy… dangerous," Tyrone called out, standing on top of a rock with his arms crossed, eyes fixed ahead.
The tension was written clearly across his face. At the same time, Bam's shadow falcon screeched out its warning, and Bam's own face carried the same grim expression as Tyrone's.
It was obvious—the enemies approaching were powerful, feral.
Hector took a slow breath to steady himself, then peered past the safe zone into the forest.
Around ninety people. He guessed they had already formed an alliance to increase their chances of ranking higher.
If he was right, then his team's chances of winning were practically zero. And if things got worse, they couldn't even run.
He suspected there were still many other teams lurking outside, waiting to strike.
Of course, that was the worst-case scenario. But now, with Violet's team helping, he believed their chances could rise significantly. Although he didn't like relying on Violet.
"Oh, shit!" Tyrone suddenly burst out laughing.
Hector's brows tightened.
"Who are those guys?"
Bam, standing nearby, sighed.
"Just some princes and their friends. Looks like they've already recognized us, so… I don't think we'll need any tricks for them."
Hector said nothing. He simply kept his gaze fixed ahead, waiting for whatever was coming.
Meanwhile, Violet's eyes locked fiercely on the princes, like she was ready to lunge and tear them apart at any moment but Adele reached out and held her back.
Clive frowned as he looked at their enemies.
"That sucks!"
Bill, who was sitting on his dog, nodded.
"Those commoners aren't a big issue, but Adele and that brat… they're real trouble."
Tom asked, "So what do we do now? Just don't provoke them and pick a proper place to rest?"
The two teams turned their eyes to Bill, waiting for his answer.
"We have the advantage in numbers, why not just fight them?" one noble asked eagerly.
Bill just shook his head and got off his dog.
"That's stupid. Adele could rip your team apart without even trying. Our numbers are just for show."
"But, I've got a plan to take their badge."
He chuckled and walked forward, shouting toward Hector instead of Adele and her team. It seemed he had a few plans for him.
"I have an offer for you."
Hector perked up his ears, then started moving, with Bam and Tyrone following right behind him, ready to fight if needed.
Adele frowned, trying to figure out what was going on in Bill's rotten brain.
"An offer? What the hell's wrong with him? This can't be good."
"I must stop him." Violet was worried. She shouted and tried to go after him, but Adele was too quick, holding her back.
"Don't. He's not a kid anymore, let him handle it."
Violet glared at Adele and snapped, her amber eye glowing sharply.
"Let me go! You bitch!"
Adele and Eric froze, shocked and confused by what they just heard. For a moment, they even thought they were hallucinating, like their ears had betrayed them.
Especially Adele—she had known Violet for a long time. Even though Violet could be sharp-tongued with people she hated, Adele never thought she'd be the target herself. The words hit her hard.
Just for a blind guy she met recently.
She staggered for a second and loosened her grip on Violet's hand.
But only a moment later, Violet suddenly realized how rude she had been. Her voice turned soft, regretful.
"I-I'm sorry…"
She lowered her head, no longer resisting.
Adele shook off her shock with a sigh, rubbing Violet's head gently, trying to comfort her.
"Don't worry. I'll protect him for you—if any of them show even a trace of hostility."
