Chapter 20: 20 The Aria XVII
Siegfried laid Geralt's body on the ground and turned his gaze to his men who were looking at him with sadness.
His vision was red due to blood overflowing from his eye but he could still see as he was no mere Man.
The blood of a dragon flowed through his veins.
He couldn't let these men who followed him into battle countless times die, even if he died he would let his death protect them if that was the last thing he did....
....
Siegfried showed or at least tried to show a smile to all of them to reassure them but it looked hideous with the blood pouring down his face.
" Everyone..... The day all of you swore loyalty to me, I promised that I wouldn't let any of our deaths be meaningless" Siegfried said in a calm tone as he scanned his gaze through the crowd making even the most battle-hardened once among them tear up a bit as memories came flooding to them.
Most of them if not all of them came from war-torn villages which experienced atrocities due to the constant war, and this man in front of them was the one who gave them purpose.
Some of them were formerly criminals who were forced into this life due to their circumstances.
But this man gave them salvation.
To others, he might be a demon, a hero, a butcher, or a monster but to them, he was their hope.
By following him they wished to leave a mark in this World and if possible help as many as they could along the way.
They didn't want another child to go through what they experienced.
So each time they fought on the battlefield it was for their dream and ideals. Riches and power did not motivate them but the wish to help this man out was what drove them.
But now seeing their invincible General in this state how could they stay calm, the betrayal from one of their comrades along with his death was hard to stomach.
And to think the empire itself wanted their General dead.
This brought forth a sense of frustration and anguish within them.
They wanted to help him but were powerless to do so.
Taking in all of their emotions made Siegfried himself feel emotional " I am sorry for bringing you all into this mess " Siegfried said in an apologetic tone but his words were met with outrage and discontent as they denied his word telling him how much they owed him.
Siegfried felt grateful that even at a time like this they still trusted and cared about him.
"Sean" Siegfried called out to a gruff man who was one of the leaders and one of the first members to join his army.
" General..." Sean's voice trailed off as he gazed at the once invincible man in such a sorry state.
But he still took a deep breath and calmed his emotions down as he could see that Siegfried had something to say to him.
Siegfried had a sad smile on his face as he reached behind his neck and removed a crude necklace with a beautiful stone tied to it.
Siegfried lightly caressed the necklace with a touch of reminiscence before taking a deep breath and looking over at Sean who was gazing at him seriously.
" I want you to give this to my wife .... And tell her I am .... Sorry" Siegfried said sadly as he gave the necklace in his hands to Sean who wrapped it in Sheepskin and secured it inside his Armor.
Sean wanted to say something but in the end, he gritted his teeth and shut up because he knew what Siegfried was planning.
" Take Grani with you ... he knows the way... " Siegfried said in a calm tone as he turned his back to them and started walking towards the direction where the enemy army was rushing from.
He could see the huge dust cloud that had picked up due to galloping horses.
He neither felt fear nor anger, all he felt was sadness.
" Retreat ..... I won't let them pass....." Siegfried's voice was sonorous as it resounded among his comrades making them clench their fists in frustration.
All of them clenched their fists and beat their chests in a salute to their general before commencing their retreat.
They knew that if they stayed they would only be a burden to their general and even if it tore them up inside, they had to leave.
They were weak and that was the truth, no matter what they did he would die.
They couldn't save him and the only thing they could do was follow his last order and honor him....
.....
A huge coalition army was rushing towards the region where the 'Butcher' was stationed together with his followers.
They wouldn't dare to attack him in any other circumstance but they got information that he was poisoned and incredibly weakened so it was the right time to eliminate him.
It was exactly the right time to attack and killing the invincible General of the empire would be a huge achievement for any one of these generals who wanted to achieve great things.
As they were rushing towards the location all of them felt the hairs on their bodies rise up.
*Dub* *Dub*
They seemed to have heard a faint heartbeat, it wasn't loud but each and every one of them heard it.
They felt a faint premonition that something was about to happen.....
