Chapter 21: 21. The Aria XVIII
Skadi was struggling relentlessly against the chains in hopes of breaking them but suddenly her movements stopped as her eyes became blank and she slumped to the ground.
Tears streamed down her face as she muttered 'No' over and over again like a broken record.
Even if she couldn't use divine energy she was still a goddess and names held power.
So when someone prayed to her she could listen to it.
And she had always made sure to make it so that she might be able to know whenever Siegfried used her name.
She was used to his usual prayers of gratitude or happiness but right now when he evoked her name he only said sorry.
But that made a pit form inside her as she felt like her heart was being squeezed by something.
She understood, something had happened to him, and him saying sorry meant he was going to do something drastic.
She could only think of one thing that might evoke in him the helplessness and despair she felt from him.
Skadi didn't let out a single sound as tears flowed down her face while her gaze was empty.
Her heart had truly frozen over now.....
.....
Siegfried prayed to his goddess and offered words of apology because he believed he wouldn't be able to see her ever again.
He was about to sacrifice his soul to gain strength to protect his comrades.
Right now his situation was perilous, he was losing strength by the second and he felt like in a minute he would lose all of his strength and would struggle to even stand.
So if he was to protect his comrades then he could only sacrifice his soul to gain strength.
He knew of this forbidden spell because it was among Fafnir's treasure hoard and only Skadi knew of its existence other than him.
When she knew of its existence she had berated him a lot for learning something like it and had made him promise to not ever think of using it.
He had promised her to never ever touch it but it seems he would have to break yet another promise.
Siegfried had a bitter smile on his face as he drew the rune on his chest with blood and after drawing it he recited the chant that would activate it.
After the rune glowed on his skin, Siegfried experienced a mind-numbing pain coursing through his body.
It felt like his soul itself was being burned.
But he felt it..... power..... coursing through his body and more strength than he had ever experienced.
*Boom*
A small explosion was created by wind pressure being released around him.
Siegfried's subordinates had awed expression on their faces as they took one last look at their General before retreating.
The army that was marching from afar had never stopped, and the dust cloud was only getting closer and closer.
Runes formed on Siegfried's exposed skin as they started glowing in an eerie purple colour. They moved around his skin like living worms.
Siegfried after making sure that everyone was retreating turned his gaze towards the distant army that was rushing towards him.
His body was in unimaginable pain but it was nothing compared to the sadness and regret he was feeling.
A part of him wondered if he should have just stayed with his wife and waited for the war to be over.
But deep down he knew, even if given a second chance he would still rush to the battlefield.
That's the kind of self-righteous bastard he was.
Hero ...what a wonderful title. But it was just worthless if you can't even protect the people you want.
What's the point of trying to provide salvation to others if you can't first provide it to yourself.
What's the point of sacrificing yourself for people who wouldn't even care about your existence after a few years.
Why cause suffering to your loved ones.
A lot of negative thoughts filled his mind as a self-deprecating laughter echoed from his lips.
Siegfried laughed like a madman through tears.
If anyone saw him then they would only see a broken man destroyed by his own ideals.
All the time the sound of a beating heart resounded throughout the surrounding battlefield.
It wasn't loud but somehow every living creature was able to hear it, it was more accurate to say that they felt it.
*Dub-Dub* *Dub-Dub* *Dub-Dub* ...*Dub-Dub*....*Dub-Dub*...*Dub-Dub* ...*Dub*....*Dub*
The beating sound finally resided and other than the galloping of the horses and the sound of dust rising nothing was heard on the battlefield.
It was almost eerie how silent it was, the sound of birds which was prevalent before had completely stopped.
Suddenly the army descended into chaos as the horses started going crazy one after the answer.
They suddenly came to a halt causing the riders to topple to the ground.
Due to the sudden action, many horses tumbled to the ground.
The soldiers didn't know what was happening, but the ominous premonition they felt was only getting more and more darker.
All of them were surprised by the screech of thousands of birds as they were rushing in the opposite direction as if fleeing.
Their horses too were running away with some unfortunate riders hanging on to horses having their heads knocked against the rough ground.
Even if injured the horses tried to run in the opposite direction to which the army was marching.
The soldiers felt a shiver pass through their bodies as they realised something was coming....
