Chapter 148: The Knight Guard Who Served Even Beyond Death.
Evelise's tone softened, her voice carrying a faint warmth that contrasted the cold air around them. Oshan and Sid stayed silent, both drawn in by her calm, reflective manner.
"When I entered the room, I expected dust and ruin, but… it was the same. Exactly as I left it before my wedding day. The red curtains, the books, my old notes… even the bed. Everything was untouched. It was as if time had stopped inside that room."
Her hands clenched slightly as she continued.
"I worked quickly. I packed what I needed— clothes, herbs, journals, the tools I couldn't replace. I thought I was almost done when I heard the sound. The door slammed behind me."
Evelise's eyes flickered with memory.
"I turned, shotgun ready, but what I saw… made me drop it."
Her voice trembled, just slightly.
"The statue. The one by the door— it had moved. It bowed. I recognized that motion. I've seen it hundreds of times before."
Evelise's expression darkened, her eyes softening with pain.
"It was you… Oshan. My knight. My closest friend."
She shook her head slowly, her voice trembling just enough to betray the weight of the memory. Her gaze drifted toward Oshan's glittering blue eyes.
"You didn't speak. Not a single word. But even through the armor, I saw your skin… green and lifeless. I realized you were gone— dead, but still standing there. Still serving."
Evelise's eyes shimmered faintly in the moonlight.
"I couldn't stop myself. I cried, right there in front of you. And you, Oshan… you didn't move. You just bowed again and left the room, closing the door behind her like you used to when I wanted to be alone."
Evelise paused, her lips trembling as she tried to steady her breath. Oshan's tear slid silently down her cheek, glinting in the moonlight like a shard of glass. Then Evelise drew in a deep, shuddering breath and forced herself to continue.
"When I finally wiped my tears and opened the door, you were still there. Standing in the hall, blocking the path. It was like you were alive again, keeping me from escaping like you always did whenever I tried sneaking away from the mansion as a carefree girl. Only this time, it wasn't duty. It was something deeper. Even in death, you wouldn't… l-leave me un- unguarded."
She rubbed her eyes softly. Tears streaming down.
"I cried until I fell asleep. When I woke up, it was already dark. The entire mansion was silent. I didn't realize how much time had passed, and then I started worrying about you, Sid."
Evelise straightened slightly, her trembling voice regaining strength as she lifted her chin. Her eyes met Sid's, who was smiling faintly and gently holding her hands as if grounding her in the moment. She drew a steady breath, her expression firming.
"I knew I had to move fast. I checked the window, thinking there might still be a way out. The bed was softer than I remembered, but that wasn't what I needed. I tore the sheets apart and tied them into a rope. I packed everything I could carry into my bag— herbs, notebooks, a few of my tools and threw the makeshift rope out the window. I climbed down carefully, my hands freezing from the wind."
Her eyes flickered toward the window.
"When I reached the ground, I heard the sound of a lantern— one of the zombie night guards was coming down the hall. I hid behind the hedges, holding my breath. I waited… then, a loud crash echoed from the second floor. The sound of metal and shouting. It was you."
Evelise smiled faintly, shaking her head.
"I should have known. I should have expected you'd wake up and charge straight into danger."
Sid let out a weak laugh.
"What can I say? I don't do patience very well."
Evelise sighed and leaned back, her expression softening.
"You never did. That's when I knew I had to reach you before the whole place turned into a warzone again."
Sid nodded, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Yeah, it did turn into a warzone. That guard of yours is seriously committed. She almost flattened me with her shield."
Oshan's eyes widened in alarm.
"What? I did that? I am truly sorry, sir. I… honestly don't remember anything from that time. If I had known, you wouldn't have been almost flattened—you would've been. No one was allowed near Lady Evelise's chamber."
Sid blinked, startled.
"The heck? Yow, Lady Evelise— this giant woman's got humor!"
Evelise chuckled, shaking her head.
"She's actually right, Sid. Oshan was the perfect guard anyone could ask for. She was the number one knight in the city, beat every man who ever doubted her just because she was a woman."
Oshan smiled faintly, a mix of pride and gratitude in her eyes.
"Thank you, Lady Evelise… and for not pulling the trigger when you saw me. Because of that, Sir Sid was able to bring me back. And now, I have a second chance to protect you… this time, I won't fail."
As the three of them shared that rare moment of calm, a sharp creak echoed through the mansion. The sound came from the front gates. All three turned at once, eyes snapping toward the noise. Oshan, still wearing Sid's jacket over her bra and panties, moved instantly. She go out into the chamber and peered down the long hallway toward the grand staircase. The gate, which had been firmly shut for years, now stood slightly ajar and beyond it, the distant groans grew louder. In seconds, the flood began. The wave of zombies outside spilled inward like a tide breaking through a dam.
Then oshan returned fast in the chamber, and reported, her voice laced with the cold professionalism of a guard facing a breach.
"Lady Evelise... the gate. They are spilling in."
Sid's expression darkened, as his ears are already catching up the zombies snarles.
"We need to move. Now!"
