Zombie Bodyguard

Chapter 1218: Elven Eye

The Xiao Family is facing a similar situation, so Xiao Manxue has the same concerns. Moreover, the stronger the Li Family becomes, the worse the news is for the Xiao Family. Originally, she could have taken advantage of the Li Family's prosperity to have an even better life than now, if only she were willing to lower her head. But the mother and daughter of the Xiao Family are both stubbornly proud.

Lin Tian, however, smiled nonchalantly and said, "Miss, there's no need to worry. Although fortune is intangible, it's not without traces. Back in the day, the Yun Family's fortune was so great, yet due to drastic changes within, it continually declined. Similarly, if the Li Family suffers blows in key events, their fortune will naturally slowly dissipate."

"Are you talking about the Sword of the King?" Xiao Manxue's heart stirred, and she spoke softly.

Lin Tian nodded and said, "That's right. The Sword of the King is a treasure. If Li Wenfeng obtains it, his strength will certainly soar. His increased strength equates to the Li Family's strength rising, and their fortune naturally becomes even more prosperous, so we can't let him get the sword."

After speaking, Lin Tian observed Xiao Manxue's reaction and smiled, "Will this put a burden on your heart for Mrs. Xiao's family, your maternal grandfather, and uncles?"

Xiao Manxue was silent for a moment and then softly said, "If the Li Family had even a trace of kindness towards us, mother and daughter, they wouldn't have pushed the Xiao Family to a dead end in everything. Also, don't assume I'm like those naive girls on TV who silently endure when bullied—I, Xiao Manxue, can't do that."

"Miss, do you know why I admire you? It's because of this unyielding spirit against any difficulty. This is the boss I know," Lin Tian watched Xiao Manxue intently and said sincerely.

Their eyes locked for a long time, and Xiao Manxue eventually lowered her head in defeat, her face blushing slightly—the bashful look was truly a tender moment when she bowed her head.

"Li Wenfeng has left, let's follow him," Lin Tian suddenly said, patting Xiao Manxue on the shoulder. Xiao Manxue looked at Lin Tian's turning back with a slight sigh of regret.

Li Wenfeng walked towards the Knight Hall and entered it, then ascended the tower of the Knight Hall via the stairs. Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue followed all the way.

At night, the hallway seemed especially quiet, but as the three walked through, hardly any sounds were heard. None of them were ordinary, all deliberately masking their footsteps.

Li Wenfeng didn't want to draw anyone's attention, while Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue didn't want Li Wenfeng to discover them. Outside, the tower's pointed top hid a surprisingly large internal space.

Upon reaching the topmost level, Lin Tian discovered that there was a pillar on top of the tower, with mysterious magical runes carved into it, and at the top of the pillar was a huge crystal.

The crystal was artificially polished into a polyhedron, and under the moonlight, it refracted a captivating glow. Li Wenfeng circled the pillar, observing the runes and the crystal.

Whatever secret he discovered, there were times when he smiled and times when he shook his head. Eventually, after seemingly gaining nothing, he turned and left the tower top. Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue remained hidden in the darkness. Once Li Wenfeng left, the two stepped out.

"Should we continue to follow him?" Xiao Manxue asked.

"No need, this should be Li Wenfeng's final stop in his treasure hunt. Let's take a look at that crystal," Lin Tian shook his head.

The two walked up to the pillar and examined it closely. Only then did Lin Tian discover that the crystal wasn't stationary; it was actually rotating slowly. The crystal being a symmetrical polyhedron made it difficult to notice its movement.

"Installing a crystal at the top of the tower can be seen as decoration, but designing it to rotate, does it have any significance?" Lin Tian wondered aloud.

Xiao Manxue was not too surprised by the crystal and said, "I remember it's like a timing device. In ancient times, without clocks and such, they had to rely on some kind of device to keep time."

"A timing device?" Lin Tian muttered quietly.

He certainly knew about ancient timing devices. In ancient Huaxia, there was the sundial, also known as the guibiao, which timed with the sun's shadow. There were also water clocks and sand clocks—the sand clock was used earlier in Huaxia than in the West.

Xiao Manxue thought Lin Tian was asking about the principle of the timing device, so she explained, "This timing device uses water power. Inside the device, there's a water tank. The tank's water flows out through pipes, generating power to drive gears. The gears pass the rotating force via shafts, ultimately moving the crystal's base."

"Using water power has its drawbacks, right? In Wudu's winters, there's snow and ice. Once the tank's water freezes, the timing device fails," Lin Tian mused.

Xiao Manxue replied, "Yes, it does fail in winter. I think its decorative meaning far outweighs its timing function. Even in ancient times, sand clocks were more practical, as they don't freeze and are portable."

"So, what did it mean for Li Wenfeng to come up here specifically?" Lin Tian was quite puzzled by Li Wenfeng's actions.

During his time at the Knight Academy, Li Wenfeng conducted a lot of investigative work. Lin Tian only saw one part and naturally didn't know what he intended to do.

Xiao Manxue also shook her head and said, "I don't know. Maybe Li Wenfeng has some information."

"By the way, the Mage Tower at the Female College and the Knight Hall have a similar structure. Do they have such crystals and timing devices?" Lin Tian asked again.

"Of course, the two schools were designed by the same person, so the main buildings are basically the same. The two crystals are collectively known as the Eyes of the Spirit," Xiao Manxue confirmed, then looked at Lin Tian curiously, "Is there a problem?"

Lin Tian thought for a moment and said, "No, we're missing too much key information, but that's okay. As long as we monitor Li Wenfeng's movements at all times, we might be able to find the Sword of the King."

"Let's go, we won't find any clues tonight." Lin Tian said.

Following their original route, they left the Knight Academy, returned to the dormitory area, and Lin Tian and Xiao Manxue parted ways to return to their respective dorms.

"Rossi, there's something important. You're to monitor Li Wenfeng's movements, but be careful. At your current level, you're no match for him, so don't expose yourself." Lin Tian assigned Rossi the task of surveillance.

Although Rossi wasn't a match for Li Wenfeng, Rossi had excellent tracking concealment skills, ensuring they wouldn't be discovered while tailing.

"Brother Tian, if he makes any moves, should I intervene?" Rossi asked.

"No need, revealing our identity in Holy Spirit Town would make us targets, and even Miss would be implicated. You just need to report his movements to me at any time," Lin Tian said, waving his hand.

Early the next morning, Rossi went out quickly and soon sent information back to Lin Tian, albeit mostly trivial news.

However, one thing caught Lin Tian's attention; during the surveillance, Rossi discovered that Yuwen Luofei was actually Li Wenfeng's fiancée.
