Chapter 24: The Chunin Exams! Part 1
I was going to train after a mission when I felt someone follow me. I looked behind me and saw a box colored to look like the road with two holes in the front. I had a hunch on who it could be and decided to play around with him a little bit. I walked a bit more and body-flickered behind the box. The kids under the box revealed themselves and looked around frantically for me. Konohamaru and two other kids, a boy and a girl. I noticed they were wearing the same goggles I wore before I got my headband.
"You know, you shouldn't follow a ninja like that. Especially with those lousy skills." I said.
"As expected of the person I have acknowledged as being my almost equal! Your skills rival my own."
"Hey guys, what's with the goggles?" I asked.
"Heh heh heh, you're our idol. We're copying your style." Konohamaru said.
"Oh, okay…" I said.
"What do you mean, 'okay?' Suddenly too cool for school, big guy?" Konohamaru said, angrily.
"What do you guys want?" I asked.
"We'll show you, boss! Can you come now?" The girl asked.
I also heard Konohamaru whisper to the other kid, "He's looking down on us."
"I kinda have to train, but you guys are welcome to come and watch." I said.
"But… But you promised to play ninja with us!!" Konohamaru yelled.
"Oh, was that today? How about this, you guys come and train with me. I'll teach you some advanced chakra control exercises that will help you with ninjutsu." I said, the kids were practically jumping with excitement at the end of my sentence.
"Alright! What're we waiting for? Let's go!" Konohamaru yelled and ran off, he made a turn on another street and I heard him run into someone.
Third Person POV
Meanwhile, Kurenai and Asuma, while with their respective teams, heard an eagle's call, and as they looked up they saw the birds flying in a secret pattern above them. They recognized the signal and wrapped up their business to go and meet with the Hokage.
Naruto POV
I ran after him and saw him getting carried by the collar by someone from the sand village with a girl next to him and an extremely malicious and dark chakra presence hidden nearby on a tree. I felt Sasuke converging on our location since he was nearby, he probably felt the disturbance as well. I ignored the dark chakra presence for Sasuke to handle and made clones appear behind the guy holding Konohamaru and the girl next to him.
Third Person POV
In the Hokage's Private Office, a group of Ninja were standing in an orderly fashion at attention in front of the Hokage waiting for him to speak.
"Seeing who I invited here, you may be able to guess what we are about to discuss." The Hokage said.
"Is it time already?" Kakashi said, pretending to be surprised.
"Have you informed the lords of the other lands yet? Because, I've already seen some of them in our village." A ninja in the back said.
"When is it going to be?" Genma asked.
"One week from today." The Hokage replied.
"Isn't this rather sudden?" Genma asked again.
The Hokage exhaled the smoke from his pipe and said, "To make it completely official, I hereby announce, seven days from today. We shall begin the Chunin exams."
Naruto POV
The clones held a kunai to their necks and I appeared in front of them releasing a tiny amount of my bloodlust and said, "I don't think it's a very good idea for you to enter another village's territory and threaten the grandchild of the Hokage. You have five seconds to put the kid down and state your business or not even your hidden friend can save you."
"We are here for the Chunin exams man, I had no idea he was the Hokage's grandkid I swear. He just bumped into me so I wanted to teach him a lesson." The guy with purple makeup said.
I grabbed Konohamaru and said, "Well, let ME teach you a lesson. Don't threaten the civilians of another village inside their territory or next time you'll find yourself dead before you could even realize it."
Third person POV
"Now then, We'd like to hear first from those who have overseen the training of our newest Genin. Kakashi, Kurenai, and Asuma. Tell us, do any of you have any Genin you'd recommend for this year's Chunin exams? Before we can even consider them, they must have completed a minimum of eight missions. Beyond that, employ your own judgment as to whether they are ready to aspire to the next level. To be truly competitive, candidates should probably have completed at least double the recommended number of missions." The Hokage said.
'He shouldn't be asking this yet, it's too soon for any of them.' Iruka thought.
"You may begin Kakashi." The Hokage said.
"I lead Team 7, Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto Uzumaki, and Sakura Haruno. I, Kakashi Hatake, recommend all three for the Chunin selection exams."
"My squad is number 8, Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka, Shino Aburame. I, Kurenai Yuhi, recommend all three for the Chunin Selection exams."
"Team 10, Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara , and Choji Akamichi. I, Asuma Sarutobi, recommend all three for the Chunin selection exams."
"Hmm, how unusual for all three of you to recommend your teams with no hesitation." The Hokage mused.
"Just a moment!"
"Yes Iruka?" The Hokage said.
"Lord Hokage! Forgive me if I overstep, but all of the students just named, were my students in the academy. Certainly, they are all gifted and show both commitment and talent. But it's too soon for kids that young to be promoted to Chunin. Only with time will they have the kind of experience and maturity those exams require. I don't understand why their supervisors can't see that." Iruka said.
"I was half their age when I attained the rank of Chunin, Iruka." Kakashi said.
"They're not like you! Do you want to destroy those children? You all know what they call the Chunin selection exams don't you?" Iruka responded angrily.
"They complain about every mission they get. Just once, I think it would do them good to find out what real pain is. Let's admit it, breaking them would be fun." Kakashi said.
"Are you out of your mind?" Iruka said.
"It was a joke, Iruka. I understand you, and I'm sorry if my recommendation upsets you. But I stand by it."
"Kakashi, can we finish this?" Kurenai asked.
"It's none of your business anyway. They're not your students anymore. They are soldiers under my command."
Iruka, with nothing left to say, retreated back to his original position, bowed and said. "I apologize for the intrusion, I am fine now."
'What a drag… huh. I guess that kid is rubbing off on me.' Asuma thought.
Naruto POV
I grabbed Konohamaru and as I was about to leave, a small whirlwind of sand appeared and a kid with red hair and deep black eye bags revealed himself from within. Just as he showed himself, Sasuke appeared next to me as well.
"G-Gaara, I-"
"Shut up, you're a disgrace to our village. You two, what are your names?" He spoke slowly and menacingly while looking at Sasuke and me.
"Sasuke Uchiha," Sasuke said.
"Naruto Uzumaki, what about you?" I asked.
"Gaara of the Sand," he looked towards his group and continued, "Let's go."
I watched them walk away and then looked towards Sasuke. "We should go and report this to the Hokage," I said.
"Alright," Sasuke said.
"Konohamaru, sorry, but I'm gonna have to put a rain check on training. Maybe next time okay?"
"Aww, promise?" He asked.
"Promise." I replied.
A little further away, I could feel the presence of three people watching us. As I felt them leave, I glanced in their direction and saw three people wearing white and black camo pants and scarves. I figured I should ask the Hokage about them as well.
After reporting to the Hokage he explained that the Chunin exams are coming up and that the sand village ninjas, and the other team I saw, came early. After the report I went and trained for the rest of the day. For the next five days, we went on missions everyday. On the sixth day, Kakashi sensei showed up late as usual and said, "I've recommended all three of you for the Chunin selection exam."
"Say what!" Sakura yelled in surprise.
"Finally!" I said.
"You have to fill out these applications." Kakashi said.
"Kakashi sensei, I love you!" I said in excitement.
"Get off, You're embarrassing me!" Kakashi said.
"The exam is entirely voluntary, the choice is yours. You don't have to turn in those applications if you don't want to. If you do, report to room 301 at the school by 4 tomorrow afternoon. That's all!" Kakashi said and disappeared.
"Dum-di-dah… The chunin exams! I bet there'll be a lot of tough competition. Like that purple makeup guy!" I said. 'And Sasuke' I thought, glancing at Sasuke. I swear I won't let anyone beat me!
I immediately filled out the forms and I decided to relax and visit Ichiraku's while I'm at it, it's been a while.
The next day.
I stocked up on all my supplies and went to the academy. I met up with Sasuke and Sakura and we walked in together. There was a commotion on the second floor with a bunch of people gathered around, arguing with two people and fighting to get through the door. I looked at Sasuke and asked, "Genjutsu?"
He just nodded and walked towards the two people blocking the way towards the fake entrance. I saw a kid in a green onesie getting beat up and another girl walked up to confront them but got slapped.
"That's just cruel" I heard someone say.
"What did you say? You misunderstand! We're just trying to spare you. The Chunin exam is incredibly difficult, we've already failed three times so far. There are people who made it, then immediately gave up being shinobi. Others who ended up crippled, some reduced to vegetables, we've seen it all! Besides that, Chunin are team commanders, they lead their units. The responsibilities for failed missions and dead shinobi rest firmly on their shoulders. And you little punks have the nerve to apply? We're saving a step by weeding out the obvious losers beforehand" One of the people blocking the entrance said.
Sasuke walked up to them and said, "That's a fun little game you're playing, but it won't work on us. So why don't you just drop the Genjutsu and let us through. We've got business on the third floor."
"Heh, so you've figured it out huh." The other person blocking the door said.
"It was easy. Right, Sakura?"
"Huh?" Sakura said.
"You're the most analytical and the best in our team at understanding Genjutsu." Sasuke said with a smile.
"Of course I noticed it. Obviously, we're still on the second floor." Sakura said.
"Come on, hurry it up! We're gonna be late." I said.
The illusion on the number plate above the door changed and turned to 201.
"Hey, not bad. But just seeing through it isn't enough!" One of the ninja with spiky hair ducked down and raised his leg for a kick. Sasuke just smirked and went for a kick to block. Out of nowhere a blur appeared in between Sasuke and the other kid and held their feet with his bare hands.
"Wow, that was awesome dude, I could barely see you move." I got excited and walked up to the guy in green. "What's your training routine like? I would love to train with you some time."
"Whew," he gave a thumbs up and said. "I would love to train with you friend! I cannot wait to spread the power of youth! Just like Gai sensei taught me!"
"Hey, that's not what we agreed on. You're the one who insisted we should avoid drawing attention to ourselves." The Hyuga said.
"B-but." The guy in green stuttered as he looked at Sakura with a small blush. He walked up to Sakura and said, "Um, hi. My name is rock lee. You're Sakura, right? Would you like to go out with me? I'll protect you with my life." He said as he gave a thumbs up and a glistening toothy smile.
"No, way. You are way out of hand." Sakura said. I couldn't stop myself from laughing as I saw him dejectedly walk back to his team.
"Hey, you! What's your name?" The Hyuga guy asked Sasuke.
"It's common courtesy to give your own name first." Sasuke replied.
"You're a rookie? How old?"
"I don't have to tell you a thing." Sasuke replied again.
They both stared at each other while me, Sakura, Lee and their other female teammate just stood on the side looking at one, then the other. All of a sudden they both turned away and walked away.
"Now that, that's finally over. Let's go!" Sakura said cheerfully as she pulled both Sasuke and me towards the next floor.
As we were making our way to the Chunin exams, suddenly someone shouted to us from a balcony. "You with the nasty look, let's fight! My name is Rock Lee and I want to test how effective my techniques will be against the famed Uchiha Clan."
"Why should I waste my time against you?"
"I'm currently the strongest Genin in my year and I want to test out the strength of the one who was named rookie of the year."
"Ooh, this is gonna be interesting. Sakura, let's give them some space, thank kami I brought my chips." I said.
"Hmph, fine, let's see what you got." Sasuke said and flickered towards Lee and went for a punch. Lee flickered as well and appeared behind Sasuke and went for a kick while saying, "Konoha Whirlwind!"
Sasuke dodged the kick, but Lee landed on his arm and used the momentum to turn while low to the floor and went for another kick, to the face. Sasuke was caught by surprise at Lee's incredible speed and couldn't dodge fast enough so he put his guard up. Lee put an arm up like he was about to cast a Jutsu which caught Sasuke by surprise and Lee managed to connect his kick to Sasuke's face and sent him flying.
Sasuke seemed dazed from the attack and I wondered if he used some secret technique. But I didn't feel him use any chakra. Sasuke seemed to have come to the same conclusion as me because his eyes turned red and his three tomoe Sharingan appeared.
Sasuke approached Lee ready to attack, suddenly he disappeared under Sasuke and gave him a high kick to the bottom of the chin that sent him flying high into the air.
While in the air, Lee undid the wrapping around his arms and talked to Sasuke about how he wants to prove that hard work beats talent. Out of nowhere a projectile gets shot and pins one of Lee's wraps to the wall. A red turtle appeared at the edge of the foyer and said, "That's enough Lee."
Lee looked to have gotten scared as he pulled on the wrap and landed in front of the turtle incredibly scared as it scolded him. Sasuke was still falling, so I body flickered to where he was about to land and caught him. "You alright, buddy?" I asked.
"I'm fine!" Sasuke said, as he angrily got off me.
"You-you saw?" Lee asked, shaking in fear.
"You know the rules, Lee. That move is strictly forbidden!"
"P-please forgive me, I was only-" Lee was about to explain himself, but one glare from the turtle shut him up.
Is that turtle his master? I thought.
"I-I wouldn't have used the reversal move, I never meant-" Lee stuttered, trying his best to explain, but the turtle cut him off again.
"YOU FOOL! Do you think I care about your feeble excuses? Consider the repercussions of a Shinobi badly explaining all his secrets." The turtle scolded.
"Y-yes sir." Lee said.
"I hope you're prepared."
"Yes sir," Lee said, sadly.
"Well then, he's all yours, Ga!"
All of a sudden a cloud of smoke appeared about the turtle's shell, and from it appeared an older copy of Lee in a strange pose.
"Ah, the exuberance of youth. All of you are full of it."
All of us were shocked, and I said. "He's got the biggest eyebrows yet! They're almost alive…"
"And that same dorky get up." Sasuke said.
"I've never seen anything like 'em!" I said.
"H-hey!! Don't make fun of Gai sensei!!" Lee said.
"Idiot!!" I couldn't even see him move until he was already in front of Lee as he punched him across the room.
Once again, we were all shocked.
"Lee!!"
"Gai sensei!!"
They both started to cry rivers as they hugged.
"Gai sensei, I-I,"
"That's enough Lee! Not one more word."
"Gai Sensei!" Lee started to sob as he hugged his sensei.
"I am so confused right now." I said.
"Eww," Sakura said.
"I can't believe I lost to that idiot." Sasuke said.
"I understand it's because you're young," Gai said.
"Sensei!"
"Aww, that's sweet, they're like father and son," I said. They must have know each other for a long time, because not once have they completed a sentence since Gai punched Lee.
"It's all right, Lee! Mistakes and youth go hand in hand." Gai said.
"You are too kind, Gai sensei!!" Lee said.
"But I can't let your attempt to break the big rule go unpunished. Your penalty will be to sweat after the Chunin selection exams." Gai said.
Lee gave a salute and said, "I understand!!"
"Five hundred laps around the practice arena!!" Gai said as he raised his arm in the air.
"YES, SIR!!"
"What's the deal with the turtle then?" I asked.
"By the way, how's Kakashi?" Gai said as he looked towards us.
"You know Kakashi sensei?" I asked.
"Heh heh, do I know him?" He said.
All of a sudden he was gone from our vision, I suddenly heard a voice from behind me. "I should say so! We're rivals!" Gai said.
"The score stands at fifty to forty-nine for me! I'm stronger than he is." Gai said as he gave a thumbs up, pointed towards himself and gave a toothy smile like Lee that sparkled.
"Ooh, you're stronger than Kakashi?! That's awesome, I couldn't even beat Kakashi sensei, even at my strongest and working with my team." I said, excited to have met more people as strong as my brother. I think, I haven't seen any of them fight to their fullest, but I'm sure my brother can beat them all.
"Of course! As you can see, Gai sensei is totally amazing!!!"
"I know Lee started this fight, but take pity on this old teacher and forgive him." Gai said, "You and Lee should head up to the classroom now." He said as he threw a kunai and removed the needle sticking Lee's arm wraps to the wall.
I looked at him and saw that his knuckles were scratched and had thick calluses and scars. I even saw some stitches still in his hand. Showing that he's been training right up until the exam.
"Best of luck, Lee! Later!!" Gai said and disappeared from the foyer.
"Yes sir!" Lee responded.
"By the way, Sasuke. I was exaggerating before. I'm really here to prove my own strength in combat. But I don't think you're the strongest Konoha Genin. The strongest is a member of my own team, and I intend to take him down. That's why I'm entering, by the way, you both are on my list too." Lee said and ran off.
"Finally, someone realized I'm here too." I said.
"Sasuke," Sakura said, looking worried for him. But when I saw him clench his fist, I realized something.
"Excited?" I asked him.
"Hell yeah," Sasuke said with a grin.
"Heh, you just got your ass kicked and you can't wait for more. If I didn't know any better, I'd think you're a masochist." I said while laughing.
"Shut up, Naruto!" Sakura said.
"It's not like you could beat him anytime soon. You saw his hands right? If you don't up your training by a lot, you'll just lose again." I said.
"Not like you could do any better," He said.
"Please," I said dismissively and walked off with my hands behind my head.
"Things are starting to get interesting. The Chunin exams are making my blood boil. Come on, Sakura, let's go." Sasuke said.
Once we made it to the right door, we saw Kakashi there.
"Glad you made, Sakura." Kakashi said. "This way, you all qualify for the Chunin selection exams."
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"The test is set up only for three man teams." He replied.
"But you said, it was up to us to decide whether to apply or not." I said.
"I said that so no one can pressure Sakura into coming along. Even if you didn't want to come, one word from Sasuke is all it would take for you to come."
"What would have happened if I didn't come?" Sakura asked.
"I'd have kicked them out of here, nobody gets past this point without the rest of their team. But you're all here because you want to be. And I'm very proud of you. Now get in there!"
We all smiled at his words and walked in.

Sorry, I tried to make it in one chapter, but the arc is too big and I don't want to skip too much. Anyway, I'm releasing an auxiliary chapter to keep track of the characters' backstories and their ages throughout the story. Give it a read, I think you'll like it. I'll keep adding to it whenever I can and I'll let you know when I do.
