Chapter 19 - I Only Like Your Little Stars I
After the little stars went out, the living room was briefly enveloped in darkness.
The spyware was casually thrown into the drink cup by Han Zhuo. At this time, it was being hit by carbonic acid bubbles, making a fine “sizzling” sound. Bai Xi did not turn on the light immediately. He carefully discerned the other person’s expression in the darkness, and then carefully asked: “Are you okay?”
“No.” Han Zhuo touched the remote control and adjusted the living room light to the brightest. “I was just thinking about some things in the past, so I’m not in a good mood. I’m sorry.”
Bai Xi thought for a while: “It turns out that when you are in a bad mood, the little star disappears.”
Han Zhuo found it amusing: “I thought you would ask me what happened in the past.”
“Can you tell me?” Bai Xi made two cups of hot tea, “Here, Jasmine.”
“Of course, you are my employer and my student, and you have the right to know. I’ll give you some background.” Han Zhuo sat on the sofa, “Shi Tian is right, I stayed in the underground warehouse for a long time, six years… or was it seven years?”
Bai Xi was visibly surprised: “You?”
Han Zhuo nodded and said frankly: “This is not a very pleasant story.”
When the first batch of superpowers arrived on Earth, they initially had a period of helping and supporting each other. But as the years passed, disputes and contradictions inevitably arose. When it came to “how to resolve conflicts,” some chose to stay away, some chose violence, and some chose to betray the race and cooperate with humans. The underground warehouse also took shape during that time.
Among governments, scientific institutions, and underground research organizations, the existence of aliens had long been a semi-open secret. Humans longed to have energy as powerful as theirs and envied the miraculous self-healing physiques of superpowers. This envy quickly turned into bloodshed and killing because only through a large number of individual research experiments could they find out the secret of the common genes of superpowers and use them in biology, medicine, and even military industries. It promised unimaginable profits.
Money and power were the most terrifying demons. For this purpose, humans and the rulers of the underground warehouses finally reached an agreement. Pursuers began to dispatch in large numbers, continuously sending kidnapped superpowers for research.
“What about you?” Bai Xi asked.
“I did not participate,” Han Zhuo shook his head. “I have never met my father. Eleven years ago, in the summer, I originally wanted to go abroad to find my mother, but I was taken to the underground warehouse by a pursuer with an anesthetic needle.”
Initially, no one took this seemingly gentle young man seriously. He was randomly locked up in a suburban prison and prepared to be sent to the institute with other unlucky individuals a week later. However, to everyone’s surprise, that night, the entire prison was demolished into ruins with bare hands. The alarm barely had time to sound before it was shattered. The kidnapped superpowers scrambled to escape, breaking through the power grid and dispersing into the jungle under the cover of night.
Listening to his narration, Bai Xi felt a little numb, not only because of the kidnapping case many years ago but also because through this incident, he truly realized the status of superpowers on Earth for the first time. Even if they had a legal identity, this group could be kidnapped and disappeared at will, and they couldn’t even call the police because the police station and the research institute belonged to the same government, and human police would always only serve the interests of mankind.
As Han Zhuo said before, even if hundreds of thousands of years had passed, people with superpowers would always be just guests of Earth, and the only way to turn them into masters was to make their superpowers disappear completely and become the trash inside scientific research institutions. That was why Old Zhou’s noodle shop had a booming business. No matter how remote it was, there was still an endless stream of customers.
“What are you thinking about?” Han Zhuo asked him.
“Um… nothing.” Bai Xi came back to his senses. He put down the cool scented tea in his hand and asked again, “You have been in the underground warehouse for seven years, so did your escape that night fail?
“The other superpowers escaped, and I was the only one who failed,” Han Zhuo replied, “Shi Tian was there at the time, and he ordered all the pursuers to deal with me.”
After being captured again, Han Zhuo was not sent away but stayed in the underground warehouse for a long time.
“Training you to be a new hunter?” Bai Xi asked.
“More than that,” Han Zhuo said, “Unlike the previous managers, Shi Tian quickly established a huge scientific research institution after taking over the underground warehouse. He wanted more than just wealth.”
Bai Xi guessed: “But also power?”
“Superpowers have more power than humans, but they have never been able to occupy a dominant position on Earth. Firstly, because the population base is too small, and secondly, because they live too scattered and have long been accustomed to hiding their identities. There is no unified leader,” Han Zhuo said. “Shi Tian wants to be this leader, or more than just a leader.”
Bai Xi shook his head: “I don’t understand, what does it mean to be more than a leader?”
“The scientific research institution only does two things, making superpowers even crazier, and transforming ordinary humans into superpowers,” Han Zhuo said. “He wants to form his own army, or it may have a more ulterior purpose.”
Bai Xi frowned slightly: “So when you were there, you were also…”
“During the five years in the underground warehouse, I was forced to undergo countless transformation experiments,” Han Zhuo smiled, “It was a truly dark and hellish place. It’s not ordinary time, but fortunately, my vitality is strong enough.”
Han Zhuo was not the only one who underwent transformation at the same time, but he was the only one who survived. Faster movement speed, more powerful abilities, slower aging process, and better self-healing ability – during that period, Shi Tian and his researchers almost regarded Han Zhuo as a treasure, and they were very greedy. They conducted cruel experiments on him again and again, watching with joy as he gradually became stronger and stronger until he was finally invincible.
