Chapter 142 Blind Date
Shen Mochen paid the taxi driver with a black expression on his face, not saying a word.
Cai Yuncui, after receiving the call from her hometown, immediately had the driver turn back and head to her rural home. But she forgot that she was only wearing a hospital gown and didn't bring much money, so she could only ask Shen Mochen to cover for her temporarily.
Of course, Shen Mochen's displeasure wasn't due to the money he fronted; he believed Cai Yuncui would definitely pay him back once she returned, so he wasn't too upset about that.
But what really irritated Shen Mochen was that Cai Yuncui, worried about leaving him alone, insisted on dragging him with her in her hasty return to the countryside. This was the reason for the discontent on Shen Mochen's face.
But even if he was unhappy, what could he do about it now that he was there? He would need Cai Yuncui's help in the future, so he couldn't complain. After all, family matters were at stake here, and what could he criticize at a time like this?
Shen Mochen paid a large sum of money and was dragged by Cai Yuncui, stumbling through the countryside.
As a castoff of the slums, he didn't have the sense of superiority that city folk might have towards the countryside. After all, anyone with a few acres in the countryside wouldn't be rummaging through garbage cans in the slums.
It was now noon, the air slightly warm, mixed with the scent of cooking smoke from every household. In the fields, wheat seedlings were lush, and occasionally the sound of dogs barking could be heard in the distance.
Cai Yuncui, wrapped in Shen Mochen's jacket and wearing hospital slippers, pulled him along as they ran. She probably didn't use her superpower much to accommodate Shen Mochen, but even so, he almost couldn't keep up.
This place called Sha Tian Village had quite good infrastructure—at least there were concrete roads everywhere and a row of solar-powered street lights on the sides. It was very different from the backward rural areas Yupi spoke of. Back in the city, he often heard that rural infrastructure was poor, with muddy roads everywhere and that many officials were reluctant to invest money there because the returns were meager. Whether overtly or covertly, the returns were few.
Shen Mochen had braced himself for the worst before getting out of the car, but now it appeared he had worried too much.
Since it was midday, there weren't many people on the village roads. The few they encountered greeted Cai Yuncui warmly. Cai Yuncui, too preoccupied to respond properly, just nodded her head and continued on without stopping, quickly arriving at the gate of an old house.
"Grandma, what's wrong with you!"
Cai Yuncui pushed open the door forcefully, tears already welling up in her eyes.
"Back already." Experience tales at My Virtual Library Empire
Inside, two elderly women, both past their sixtieth year, sat watching television with an air of calm. The one who spoke was wearing reading glasses and clearly had a strong presence.
"You... you're okay?" Cai Yuncui was stunned and turned to look at the black-clothed old woman, "Great-aunt, didn't you say my grandma was..."
The spectacled old lady must have been Cai Yuncui's grandmother. She hummed with full breath, "Would you have come back obediently if I hadn't told her to say that?"
"I..." Cai Yuncui was both irritated and helpless, placing her hand on her chest, she took a long breath, "If you asked me to come back, I definitely would have. Can't you just say so directly instead of scaring me like this!"
"Now that you're back, don't leave again. In the afternoon, Mr. Wang himself is coming to see you. Prepare yourself properly..."
"So you tricked me back here for a blind date!" Cai Yuncui's face showed distress.
"Have you ever listened to me and dated anyone on your own?" Grandma Cai's eyes narrowed, brooking no argument, "Let me tell you, Mr. Wang's family has several billion yuan. Cai Jiao works in his company in the city, it's absolutely reliable. Cai Jiao has shown him your photo, and he is very interested in you. He's come all the way here by car to meet you today! You'd better behave well when you see him, do you hear me!"
Cai Yuncui wore an expression that was both embarrassed and annoyed. She instinctively turned to look at Shen Mochen, feeling somewhat guilty for involving him in this farce. However, when she saw Shen Mochen's face, she was surprised; somehow, he had black dirt smeared over it, making him look filthy.
At that moment, the great-aunt also noticed Shen Mochen and couldn't resist asking, "Little Cui, who is that young man behind you?"
"Oh, oh... he's my student. I was in a rush, so I brought him along..."
Cai Yuncui explained in a muddled way, thankfully the two old ladies didn't pay much attention to this dirty little boy, instead they continued to lecture Cai Yuncui, scolding her for not obediently going on the arranged date. After being reprimanded for more than ten minutes, Cai Yuncui couldn't bear it any longer and dragged Shen Mochen into a small bedroom next to the back hall.
"Sorry about this, I didn't expect it to turn out this way," Cai Yuncui said, biting her lip apologetically.
Shen Mochen didn't reply, his face cold, neither saying it was okay.
Cai Yuncui's face showed even deeper remorse, and she kept apologizing until she finally got a "Got it" from Shen Mochen.
Cai Yuncui's brow slightly relaxed, and she bashfully lowered her head, "Could you wait for me at the door for a moment... I need to change my clothes..."
Shen Mochen silently walked to the outside of the door.
In fact, he felt it wouldn't matter if he didn't go out. The bedroom in the back had only one small iron-clad window, and that window was covered with white plastic paper, which was very opaque. This made the whole room dark, and unless one looked carefully, it was impossible to see clearly.
After standing at the door for a while, Cai Yuncui came out of the bedroom in a change of clothes, handing Shen Mochen's jacket back to him with both hands.
"Thank you, Xiao Chen," Cai Yuncui's cheeks turned slightly red, she pursed her lips and gave an embarrassed smile.
Shen Mochen remained silent, taking the jacket that seemed to have a lingering scent of coconut from Cai Yuncui.
"Clean it before you return it to me."
Shen Mochen spoke and then handed the jacket back to her.
Cai Yuncui was taken aback, lowered her head to purse her lips, and forced a smile, "Alright, sorry... I got your jacket dirty."
Shen Mochen didn't reply, idly walked out of the hall, and looked up at the clear blue sky, "When are we going back?"
"Umm, we'll go back this afternoon!" Cai Yuncui hurriedly said, "By the way, Xiao Chen, why did you smear your face all dark?"
"Didn't want the hassle, this way is best," Shen Mochen said.
"Oh, I see..."
Cai Yuncui nodded repeatedly, not quite sure what she was agreeing with.
The two were silent for a moment before Cai Yuncui suggested, "Shall we go out for a walk?"
"Aren't you supposed to have a date this afternoon?"
"That's true... but there's still some time, let's just take a casual walk and clear our minds!"
Since Cai Yuncui suggested it, Shen Mochen didn't refuse. He was a bit curious about the countryside and staying inside someone else's house was both awkward and boring.
"Grandma, we're just going out for a little walk, we'll be back soon!" Cai Yuncui took Shen Mochen to the front room and greeted Grandma Cai.
Grandma Cai was furious: "Where are you running wild to again, you scamp? Mr. Wang will be here in an hour!"
"I'll be back in one hour!"
Cai Yuncui said and quickly dragged Shen Mochen out the door.
