Chapter 123: Not Its True Master
"How are you here, Lin Langtian from the Lin Clan?" The man in dark red robes, Teng Sha, stared at the young man before him, his face betraying a hint of unease. Although Lin Langtian was younger, his reputation in the Great Flame Kingdom rivaled, if not surpassed, Teng Sha's own. Seeing Lin Langtian standing there, Teng Sha couldn't shake a sense of impending trouble.
"Heh, you must be Teng Sha, the leader of the Shadow Puppet Sect here in the Great Wasteland County. If you can be here, why can't I?" Lin Langtian replied with a faint, mocking smile as he regarded the older man's changing expression. Although he'd previously disrupted the Shadow Puppet Sect's explorations of the ancient tablet space, it seemed they had found their way here regardless. Unfortunately for them, they'd crossed paths with him.
Teng Sha's face darkened at Lin Langtian's words. He turned his gaze to the ancient, mysterious symbol emitting an enigmatic aura behind the young man, his eyes betraying a feverish desire. "It seems you're here for that symbol as well, aren't you?" he asked in a low voice.
A memory surfaced in Teng Sha's mind of his attempt to explore the tablet space three years ago when he'd almost reached the Symbol Puppet Lair to claim that ancient black symbol. But he was inexplicably ambushed and gravely injured by a mysterious figure, leaving him seething and forced to retreat empty-handed. After some investigating, he learned the attacker was a Lin Clan elder, though he had no idea why the Lin Clan would target him.
Now, however, seeing Lin Langtian here, it was evident that the attack had been orchestrated by this very man.
Lin Langtian noticed Teng Sha's dawning realization and smiled indifferently. Now, with enough power to control the situation, he felt no need to conceal anything. "You're correct, Teng Sha. I'm very interested in that black symbol. I wonder if you'd be willing to part with it?" he said coolly.
Teng Sha's heart sank. As he looked at Lin Langtian, he weighed the risks. Was it worth opposing one of the top talents in the Great Flame Kingdom for the sake of an unknown, ancient symbol?
But while Teng Sha was still hesitating, the Golden Crow on Lin Langtian's shoulder grew impatient, flew into the air, and let out a piercing cry.
"Caw!"
With a snap of its beak, the Golden Crow unleashed a dark, chilling mist toward Teng Sha and his men. The black mist, cold as the darkest night, seemed capable of freezing even the air itself, encasing Teng Sha and his group in a frigid cage.
"Careful! That creature is no ordinary beast!" one of Teng Sha's men shouted as they hastily summoned a shield of spiritual energy, forming a protective dome above their heads. The shield managed to block the cold, but traces of the intense chill seeped through, sending shivers down their spines.
"What a terrifying creature…" Teng Sha's group collectively shuddered, realizing that even Lin Langtian's pet was as powerful as a Creation Stage beast. But in the next moment, they saw that Lin Langtian himself had mysteriously vanished from his original position.
"He's above us!" a sharp-eyed elder among Teng Sha's men suddenly shouted. Just as he spoke, a dark silhouette rocketed down like a cannonball, shattering their protective barrier in a single powerful blow.
"Crash!"
The barrier disintegrated like glass under Lin Langtian's strike, scattering his enemies in all directions. The force from the blow sent Teng Sha and his men staggering back, spitting blood as they struggled to stay on their feet. Looking at the young man with newfound terror, Teng Sha finally understood the true extent of Lin Langtian's power.
"Since you've set your sights on it, Young Master Langtian, I wouldn't dream of contesting you for it," Teng Sha said, feigning politeness as he prepared to retreat, knowing he couldn't possibly defeat Lin Langtian.
But as he turned to leave, Lin Langtian's icy voice stopped him in his tracks: "Did I say you could go?"
Teng Sha's face darkened, anger flashing in his eyes. Even if Lin Langtian was the Lin Clan's most promising talent, surely he was taking this too far. But as Teng Sha turned, he saw the dark shape of a massive silver phoenix blazing toward them, radiating overwhelming power.
"Boom!"
With a deafening roar, the giant Phoenix Seal struck, obliterating Teng Sha and his entire group from the Shadow Puppet Sect before they could react. Lin Langtian simply dusted his hands, unaffected by the massacre. The Shadow Puppet Sect's strongest member was only Teng Sha, a mid-Creation Stage cultivator; the others weren't even worth the warm-up.
After finishing them off, Lin Langtian turned back to the black symbol at the center of the altar, his eyes burning with anticipation. Even Aunt Ling couldn't help but marvel at the sight. "So, this is the famed Devouring Ancestral Symbol… even in the Great Thousand World, powerful figures would kill to possess it."
Seeing her admiration, Lin Langtian's smile deepened. With excitement, he leapt toward the black symbol, grasping it in his hand. As he touched the symbol, dark threads of energy began to radiate from it, entwining to form a pulsing black sphere before him. Through the dark surface, Lin Langtian could make out an ancient symbol in the shape of a black hole, exuding a power that seemed capable of devouring everything in its path.
Thrilled, Lin Langtian focused his mind, preparing to merge his spirit with the Devouring Ancestral Symbol. But just then, an ancient, sorrowful voice echoed from the symbol:
"Alas, young friend… the master this Devouring Ancestral Symbol seeks is not you."
