Chapter 317: New Player Arrives, I Pretend to be NPC_1
Three figures abruptly materialized at the entrance of Night Hotel.
"We don't know if we can continue from where we left off last time." The leader, a middle-aged man, spoke in an even tone, with the name Black Dart Guest above his head.
The other two were Black Gun Guest and Black Sword Guest. The trio clearly knew each other and were a team.
Black Sword Guest said nothing. After glancing at their mission, Black Gun Guest commented, "There's no way we can continue from where we left off. Last time we were on the fourth floor, we made short work of six monsters, leaving only four. There's no place to continue from."
"Besides, our mission this time is on the third floor."
Black Dart Guest didn't debate further. Their last visit had been a near-death experience, but they hadn't waited it out, instead actively suppressing the Erroneous Sins.
As a trio, their mission was to suppress three pairs of Evil Demons—six in total.
They finished it the next morning, earning a large number of rewards. After getting a taste of success, they used a game item to ensure their next instance wouldn't be random, re-anchoring it to the Night Hotel.
After all, they had experience from last time, so they would naturally be much more adept this time.
"When we left last time, Night Hotel didn't have such a huge crack, did it?" Black Sword Guest abruptly spoke.
His comment caught the other two's attention. Looking again, they saw that the Night Hotel had become a dilapidated building.
It must be because the difficulty has been raised. Black Dart Guest hesitated. It couldn't possibly have been caused by Players.
Even the top-ranked Demon Slayer couldn't have done this.
"Mm, probably. Let's go register first. Did you bring a pen?" Black Gun Guest didn't seem too concerned; environmental changes due to increased difficulty were quite common.
They had been tricked by the hotel receptionist last time, resulting in the deaths of two of their five Players. So, this time they were much smarter and brought their own pen. They wouldn't have to worry about it running out of ink and being forced to use their blood or flesh.
The first person to use it had enough ink. The second could only write half before needing to use blood for the rest. It was even harsher for the third person, who had to use flesh, and the fourth had to use bone, and so on.
However, it wasn't specified that they had to use their own. Therefore, Black Dart Guest and his team used what was left of the other two people.
Indeed, the two randomly matched teammates hadn't died because the pen ran out of ink, but because this trio had used them as raw materials.
They were Players, after all, and could resurrect after death, so it wasn't a big deal.
The trio entered the hotel together. Something felt a little off, especially at the reception desk.
Why is there a different person here?
"Checking in," Black Dart Guest said, not paying much attention, shouting at the dazed person sitting behind the reception desk.
Wang Linchi looked at the three Players, somewhat at a loss.
How can Players still enter? I've practically ruined the entire Night Hotel; what tasks could possibly be left for them?
"No rooms left," Wang Linchi said flatly.
He was telling the truth. The entire hotel had been turned upside down by him. The only habitable space left was one large room, which he was currently occupying. He couldn't possibly give it up, could he?
The three Players didn't recognize Wang Linchi as a Player. A Player could display their game name when it was useful, but if they hid it, others couldn't identify them. So, it was quite normal for the trio to mistake Wang Linchi for an NPC.
"No rooms?" Black Dart Guest was somewhat dumbfounded. How could there be no rooms? If they can't even check in, how are they supposed to complete their mission?
"Yes, the hotel is under renovation," Wang Linchi said seriously.
Black Dart Guest looked at the lobby and felt Wang Linchi's words made a lot of sense. Indeed, given the state of the place, aside from the lack of tools, it really did look like it was under renovation.
"Then what should we do?" Black Gun Guest, unable to hold back any longer, finally asked.
A hotel that's supposed to be checking people in is under renovation? That's too bizarre.
What should you do? Why are you asking me? Just go find another hotel. Wang Linchi was puzzled. It's just a hotel. If this one isn't taking guests, plenty of others will.
The three Players agreed with Wang Linchi's logic. If they weren't in an instance, they would have turned around and left immediately. But now, they were inside the instance and couldn't leave even if they wanted to.
"Wait, we *are* the renovation workers! You almost had us fooled," Black Sword Guest said coolly.
His words made Black Dart Guest and Black Gun Guest instantly understand. So it's just renovation, huh? Not a big deal. We don't know how to do it, but we can pretend, right? Our goal is to suppress three pairs of Erroneous Sins. At our speed, we can finish in two days at most.
As for the renovation progress, that's not important. We can just stall.
Damn it! Now it was Wang Linchi's turn to be exasperated. I was just looking for a flimsy excuse, but these three actually went along with it!
"That's not right. My renovation crew is already complete," Wang Linchi said, trying to brush them off.
"We're temporary workers," Black Sword Guest continued.
"..." Wang Linchi felt rather helpless. Players, indeed. They won't give up until they achieve their goal.
"Alright, fill out these registration forms," Wang Linchi said, pulling three forms from a drawer and handing them over.
After taking the forms, Black Dart Guest asked nonchalantly, "Excuse me, where did the previous front desk clerk go?"
"He went back to his hometown to get married," Wang Linchi replied casually. The Human Pupa Insect had been digested long ago. He answered dismissively.
Black Dart Guest's hand paused as he was writing. This is too absurd! An Evil Demon returning to its hometown to get married? What, is its partner another Evil Demon?
He found it more believable that other Players had suppressed it, and the Game System had then corrected the situation.
"You know him?" Wang Linchi asked in return.
"Ahem, I've met him a few times." Black Dart Guest realized his mistake. Why did I have to go asking unnecessary questions?
However, Wang Linchi didn't pursue it further. He could tell these three weren't first-timers in this instance. Wang Linchi himself hadn't entered an instance immediately after the game fused with reality; instead, he had first observed and collected data.
That's why his progress was about ten days or so slower than regular Players.
But he didn't care; it wasn't like there was any conflict of interest for him anyway.
After collecting the three registration forms and noticing they were for the third floor, Wang Linchi took out room keys 301, 302, and 303 and handed them to the trio.
"The elevator broke down earlier, and the stairs are temporarily unusable due to a minor renovation accident. You'll have to figure out how to get to the third floor yourselves," Wang Linchi reminded them.
Hearing this, Black Dart Guest figured the Game System was increasing the difficulty for them and replied, "No problem."
The other two had no objections either. A bit of difficulty was normal. The last time they tried to reach the fourth floor, they had been stuck in a loop for a good half hour, nearly driving them insane.
According to their original plan, they had intended to take the elevator, but unfortunately, it was out of order.
When they opened the door to the stairwell, they were greeted by the sight of a large pile of construction debris made of cement blocks.
This left them somewhat stunned.
"This is what you call 'temporarily unusable'? It's completely blocked!" Black Dart Guest couldn't help but complain.
As for the elevator, they had already seen it; it was completely inoperable for some unknown reason.
"So how are we supposed to get up there now?" Black Gun Guest was speechless.
They had never encountered a situation like this before.
"Let's go ask the front desk how he..." Black Dart Guest started to say, turning to look. But the reception desk was empty, the sight making his hair stand on end.
"He's gone!" As he spoke, the other two also turned to look.
"It must be an Evil Demon. It was disguised really well. It seems the issues with the elevator and stairs are the beginning of the mission's difficulty," Black Sword Guest said calmly.
"Otherwise, why would the rewards be so generous?"
More rewards meant higher difficulty; this was a piece of game wisdom they had learned from experience.
"True, just like when we went to the fourth floor. But this time, the difficulty is much lower," Black Dart Guest said with a confident laugh. "It's just getting to the third floor. If we can't go through the inside, we'll go from the outside."
He means climbing the exterior wall to the third floor, Black Gun Guest instantly understood Black Dart Guest's idea.
With their abilities, climbing three floors really wasn't a problem.
"It won't be that simple. We'll definitely encounter Evil Demons while climbing. We need to be prepared," Black Sword Guest warned.
If it were really that easy, why would they deliberately block the stairwell and break the elevator?
"We won't be careless." Black Dart Guest wasn't a fool; he naturally didn't think Black Sword Guest's warning was meaningless. Instead, he was already considering how to deal with the upcoming challenges.
