Work Prophet

Chapter 8: Smile

"I'm glad you've finally figured it out." Xu Mengyuan said, "Taylor and Mr. Qin should be pleased to hear this news."

"They have always hoped you would take up the mission to save humanity; it's your innate... duty."

"Hephaestus told you on your first day at the company, not everyone has the ability to travel across dimensions. In fact, Cross-plane Travelers are very rare, especially those with the [Reborn]divine form."

"You are destined to be the Savior, and your people will be grateful for your sacrifice and dedication."

Li Yu patiently listened to Xu Mengyuan, then said, "So can my vacation end? I have to go to work on Monday."

"Of course, but before you go to work, can you come to the headquarters first? Director Taylor has some matters to discuss with you, mainly about your upcoming work."

"Upcoming work? Isn't it about continuing the missionary work and recruiting followers?"

"That's right, but there are also more detailed aspects to discuss, and you've already outperformed the other competitors. The board will start pouring more resources into you and provide more assistance; Director Taylor also wants to hear your suggestions."

"Alright, I'll come first thing Monday."

"Well, actually, if you could come over now, that would be even better... Director Taylor happens to be at the company."

Li Yu was silent for a moment and then said, "Okay, I'll be there shortly."

He went downstairs, first hailed a taxi to the industrial park, then drove his car to the office building of the Third Era.

Even though it was already Sunday, the attendance rate of the nearby office buildings was still quite high.

From time to time, he could see hurried office workers pouring out of bus and subway stations.

Li Yu parked his car in the underground parking lot, took the elevator upstairs, and upon exiting, saw the familiar logo of the Third Era.

The receptionist still remembered Li Yu, smiled at him when he arrived, and Li Yu smiled back. At that moment, he saw a head peek out from the Equipment Department's office, looking around furtively.

Upon seeing Li Yu, the head quickly withdrew.

A while later, Hephaestus emerged holding an enamel mug, pretending to get water in the break room. As he passed Li Yu, he whispered.

"Be careful of that woman."

"Which woman?" Li Yu asked.

The handsome mixed-race man wanted to say something else, but at that moment, Xu Mengyuan had already come out of the office.

So Hephaestus closed his mouth, quickly slipped into the break room with his enamel cup emblazoned with "Hope of the Village."

Xu Mengyuan walked up to Li Yu, "You're here, great, come with me, they're already waiting for you."

"They, didn't you say only Director Taylor wanted to see me? Did Mr. Qin come too?" Li Yu asked as he walked alongside her.

"Mr. Qin had other matters to attend to and didn't come. There's one more person you'll meet once inside." Xu Mengyuan knocked on a door.

A moment later, Taylor's voice came from inside, "Come in."

Xu Mengyuan opened the door for Li Yu but stopped herself, "Good luck."

"Thank you."

After thanking her, Li Yu walked in. The first things that caught his eyes were a Stars and Stripes flag and several eagle flags, hanging on either side, with an imposing oak desk in front of them.

Taylor was seated behind the desk, and besides her, there was another person in the office.

It was another woman, sitting opposite Taylor. She looked even younger than Taylor, seemingly under thirty, dressed in a white suit, with short blonde hair, devoid of any jewelry or necklaces, appearing very capable.

When Li Yu entered the room, she did not look up and kept flipping through a stack of documents in front of her.

She was reading quickly, soon reaching the last page, then raised her head.

"So, do you have any questions?" Taylor asked.

"No," the blonde woman said, "I will firmly execute the mission assigned to me by the Board."

"Excellent," said Taylor. Then she looked at Li Yu, "Let me introduce you. This is Kaden, Kaden Stone. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, with dual degrees in Finance and Operations and Information Management.

"She has worked on Wall Street, at the Washington Post, and in the Governor's Office. She is incredibly smart, with an IQ over 160, fluent in seven languages, and most importantly, remarkably loyal to her people, which is rare among intelligent individuals.

"I believe she will undoubtedly be a valuable assistant to you."

Upon hearing this, Kaden finally looked at Li Yu. She stood up from her chair, first extended a hand, and said in very standard Chinese, "Hello, Mr. Savior."

But Li Yu did not shake her hand and looked at Taylor, "What does this mean?"

"It's exactly as it sounds," Kaden was not upset and maintained her handshake gesture, smiling, "The board thinks your work has been too tiring, so they sent me to assist you.

"Oh, I heard you were originally planning to take a break; I was also intending to help temporarily manage your company."

Taylor waved her hand, "Li Yu, you're also a smart person; there's no need for such roundabout talk, Kaden."

"Alright." Kaden's smile remained unchanged, "Ms. Taylor and a few other directors like you very much, but your previous performance disappointed them. Even if you've now found your way back, we are not sure yet whether you can be trusted.

"So, to be safe, the board sent me to supervise your work, to make you more controllable. We'll be working together in the future, and I hope we can cooperate happily."

Taylor shrugged, "Don't overthink it. Supervision is just incidental; Kaden's primary mission is still to go to another reality to assist you, in pushing forward the Descend Plan. She's an outstanding assistant, although she lacks the gifts you have."

"I'm just a foolish mortal," Kaden's hand still hung in midair, "But I'm proud to be a part of this great plan."

"But you said earlier that she is just an ordinary person, and can't travel across dimensions. Are you planning to use new technology to send her first?"

Li Yu did not argue with Taylor about the assistant issue anymore, as Taylor had made it clear that Kaden was the board's assigned spy by his side, one that Li Yu could not reject.

"Oh, that would be too wasteful for faith," Kaden said, "We'll use the old method."

As she spoke, she pulled a small lady's pistol out of her pocket, aimed it at her temple, and winked at Li Yu, "See you on the other side."

With that, she pulled the trigger without hesitation, and in the next moment, blood splashed onto the imposing oak desk, and Kaden's body fell powerlessly onto the carpet.

Yet the smile still lingered at the corner of her mouth.
