Chapter 39
The bewitching spell lifted, and the sky immediately brightened above.
Mu Rong observed Huo Yao still holding Xie Zuo, who made no effort to push him away.
Suspicious, Mu Rong sensed something amiss. Observing Huo Yao help Xie Zuo onto the carriage, he quickly followed suit.
As the car door closed, Xie Zuo expelled a mouthful of blood with a “wow” sound.
“Brother!” Mu Rong moved to embrace him, halted by Huo Yao’s cold gaze.
Xie Zuo cursed, “This mortal body is truly a nuisance. It’s just a voodoo…cough…” He spat out another mouthful of blood.
Covering his chest, Xie Zuo realized he was still in Huo Yao’s embrace, while Mu Rong observed them with a subtle expression.
Huo Yao glanced at Mu Rong. “Why are you still here?”
His look dripped with threat and disdain. Mu Rong nearly knelt, stuttering, “I… I’ll leave immediately.”
“Wait,” Xie Zuo intervened. He pushed Huo Yao away. “Who permitted you to come up here? Get off!”
Observing their altercation, Mu Rong swiftly exited the carriage, leaping onto the supply vehicle behind.
Inside, Huo Yao pushed Xie Zuo onto the seat. “You’re injured; let me see!”
Resisting, Xie Zuo’s struggles only incited Huo Yao. He gripped Xie Zuo’s neck with one hand and tore his clothes with the other.
Fabric ripped loudly, drowning out Xie Zuo’s protests. Even the sound of horse hooves softened.
Mu Rong sat in the rear, face buried in anguish, unable to fathom the situation. If someone asked him, how should he explain this situation?
Sensing the tension, a silence spell was affixed to the rear window with a “pop.”
Mu Rong groaned behind his hands. Now, explaining the situation became even more impossible. ‘Could you please open the window?’
.
Inside, Xie Zuo shouted, “What do you want to do?”
To restrain him, Huo Yao bound Xie Zuo’s wrists, then applied a charm to counteract the poison’s effects on his heart. “I want to know why you harbor such resentment towards me. Is it because I haven’t visited you in all these years?”
“Ridiculous!” Xie Zuo scoffed. “Stop with the sentimentality. I despise you. Your very presence nauseates me. It’s best you never cross my path again!”
A flicker of pain crossed Huo Yao’s eyes. “Have you been influenced by others’ instigations? To doubt me to this extent… I swear to protect you for life and never elevate myself to threaten your status with my achievements.”
Xie Zuo sneered. “Oh, how gracious of you!” How shameless Huo Yao was, thinking him petty, fearing his accomplishments would overshadow him, and targeting him like this?
Too embarrassed to reveal the real reason, Xie Zuo couldn’t tell Huo Yao that he was unhappy and heartbroken because he had abandoned him for another and married someone else!
No, he had enough. He needed to sever ties with Huo Yao. The once-majestic demon king had been humiliated by the deities. When he regained his freedom, he would conquer the Immortal Realm and exact revenge!
Seeing Xie Zuo’s defiance, Huo Yao felt powerless for the first time. Two years ago, upon learning of Xie Zuo’s engagement to Princess Lin, he wanted to bring him back to the abyss. He couldn’t bear the thought of Xie Zuo being with someone else!
But now, he was just a mortal general, not a thunder deity wielding power over nature. Countless times before, he had been thwarted by Huo Zhen, unable to leave the city.
Without enough strength, he was confined at every turn. Only absolute power could grant him freedom.
Observing Huo Yao lost in thought after tying him, Xie Zuo kneed his waist. “Enough, untie me quickly!”
As Huo Yao untied the rope, he was met with a punch to the face.
Xie Zuo aimed for another blow, but Huo Yao had reached his limit, overpowering him and kissing him fiercely!
.
The carriage door abruptly opened. Huo Yao emerged with a sullen expression and a bruised lip.
The soldiers surrounding them observed with their eyes, noses, and hearts, silently pretending they saw nothing.
Due to Xie Zuo’s injury, Huo Yao ordered him to rest at the nearest royal inn until fully recovered before setting off.
Xie Zuo’s injury wasn’t severe, but he was seethed with anger. While resting on the couch in his room, he received heartbreaking news: The Young Madam Huo had returned to her parents’ home for a visit and happened to be staying at a nearby official inn. Upon hearing the prince’s arrival, she came specifically to greet him. She waited outside the inn’s door!
Originally, Mu Rong sat beside Xie Zuo, his face creased in thought about how to offer advice. Upon hearing the news, he nearly burst into tears: What kind of hellish situation was this?
The attendant delivering the message awaited Xie Zuo’s order. His immediate reaction: No!
Mu Rong, sensing trouble, hastily dismissed the attendant and shut the door. “Brother, don’t be stubborn. You must see her, just show your face a little bit.”
Xie Zuo pulled the quilt over his face, feigning ignorance. “I won’t go. I’m not well. Let her go back.”
“No!” Mu Rong yanked away the quilt. “She’s the general’s wife, here to pay respects. You must show her dignity. She’s from a prestigious family. You can’t treat her poorly!”
“I refuse to go!” Xie Zuo’s guilt and shame weighed heavy. The lip bruised by Huo Yao had yet to heal, adding to his reluctance to leave.
“We must go! Young Madam Huo is pregnant and can’t stand for long. Get up!”
“Fine, fine, I’ll go!” Xie Zuo sat up abruptly. “I want to strangle Huo Yao for putting me in this humiliating situation!”
Mu Rong was overjoyed and quickly arranged for someone to come in, change Xie Zuo’s clothes, and tie his hair. As for whether to confront Huo Yao or not, he left that decision to Xie Zuo.
.
In the main hall, Xie Zuo endured a painfully awkward tea time.
Young Madam Huo didn’t come alone; she brought her eldest son with her.
Ten years ago, Xie Zuo barely remembered the Young Madam Huo from a brief encounter at the gate of his mother’s Palace. Now, seeing her, he acknowledged her undeniable beauty, enhanced by her pregnancy, radiating a gentle, plump aura.
Young Madam Huo knelt and saluted him respectfully, her child following suit with polite kowtows. Xie Zuo felt as though he sat on pins and needles. “No need for formalities. Please, help the young madam up.”
Thankfully, it was a routine visit, and Xie Zuo wasn’t obligated to stay. After the pleasantries, he swiftly served tea and bid her farewell.
Once they departed, Xie Zuo intended to confront Huo Yao. Mu Rong weakly reminded him: “The general has escorted his wife and son back to the inn.” It felt like a slap to Xie Zuo’s face. His face flushed with embarrassment. “That shameless…”
Restlessly pacing the room, Xie Zuo’s heart pounded. He called out to Mu Rong, “Come with me.”
Half an hour later, Xie Zuo and Mu Rong each had an invisibility charm affixed to their foreheads as they appeared in the inn where Young Madam Huo was staying.
Night had descended, and the street’s lights illuminated the surroundings.
Mu Rong despised Xie Zuo’s behavior and persistently tried to pull him away. “Brother, the general has experts teaching him immortal arts. If his level is not lower than yours, it will be disastrous if he discovers us. Let’s go back quickly.”
Xie Zuo was resolute. “If you want to leave, you can go alone. If you go, we won’t be brothers anymore.”
“What are you doing here? The couple…” Seeing Xie Zuo’s expression, Mu Rong couldn’t bring himself to say more.
Xie Zuo shrugged. “I just want to see for myself. He’s no longer the Huo Yao he used to be. I’ll leave after seeing him.”
When he returned, he planned to summon Feng Yi and inquire about how to return to the abyss. No matter how enchanting the human world was, he could no longer appreciate it. This prince could do as he pleases; he no longer wanted to be part of it!
.
Back at the post house, as moonlight began to fill the sky, Xie Zuo spotted Huo Yao’s family of three approaching from a distance. He hurriedly took Mu Rong and hid behind the rockery.
In front of the rockery was a picturesque landscape with flowing water. The gentle sounds of water obscured the conversation, but Huo Yao wore a smile, Young Madam Huo appeared content, and their child playing around freely.
Unable to bear it any longer, Xie Zuo slowly emerged from behind the rockery and walked toward the post house.
“Brother, wait for me!” Mu Rong whispered.
Xie Zuo remained indifferent. “Two things. First, if Huo Yao dares to come near me again, kill him. Second, I’m leaving. Farewell, stupid brother.”
“Leave? Where are you going? Don’t be reckless!”
Their movements caught Huo Yao’s attention. Stepping forward, he positioned himself protectively in front of Young Madam Huo and the child. “Who’s there?”
Mu Rong remained silent, and Xie Zuo ripped off the spell from his forehead. “It’s me. What do you want?”
Huo Yao’s brows furrowed. “You…”
Young Madam Huo reacted swiftly, ushering the child to bow and leave. “We should go, my dear. Say goodbye to the second uncle.”
Note: lol. I really love Xie Zuo, his love is very fierce and baby is super jealous, but still reasonable.
