Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Eve Before Boarding
Although He Kui was told to go with peace of mind, it was still the first large-scale operation for ZAFT, and there was much to prepare. As for He Kui, life continued as usual; he didn't really have anything to prepare for anyway.
On the warship, he was assigned to the rear. If the front lines were to be decimated, they would naturally retreat. If the enemy pursued, there would be no point in him bringing anything along—he wasn't Kira, after all.
So he decided not to prepare anything at all.
And thus, the eve of the World Tree battle arrived.
"Here."
He Kui handed a Haro to Sule as per their usual routine.
"We're about to deploy, and you were still working on this yesterday?"
Sule inspected the Haro in front of her, noting that it had indeed improved. Excluding any possibility of hiding skills, it seemed that even deploying wouldn't affect the quality of his work.
"Yeah, I didn't have anything else to do."
He Kui smiled. The truth was, he had trouble sleeping last night. Though he used to experience insomnia before school trips, the thought of going into battle the next day felt surreal to someone who had lived in peaceful times.
"Alright then, once we're on the flagship, listen to my commands."
The flagship they were on was called the Blaishe, a Rorashia-class warship. It was smaller than the Naska-class, but it was sufficiently equipped for research purposes. It also had three elite red-clad GINNs assigned for emergency protection; as Sule said, the safety measures were quite impressive—especially since she was considered a national treasure.
"Understood."
Numerous soldiers were gathering in an orderly fashion. Most were in green uniforms, a few were in red, and the smallest group was in white. Among the white uniforms was a tall figure standing right in front of He Kui. Even though the military uniform was exquisitely tailored, it still lacked much presence on Sule.
He Kui remained a green uniform, as red was an honor reserved for those who ranked in the top twenty of the military academy—like Shi He, who would naturally wear red if she were deployed. He Kui, however, if he didn't turn white, would remain in green forever. It was impossible for him to become red. Only Sule and He Kui had come from their research department, but that didn't mean they were alone. Various experimental groups for new weaponry were also present.
Groups of people gathered in threes and fours on the ship, and He Kui's team was with the neutron jammer effectiveness measurement group. Since there were more people over there, their team was naturally smaller.
"Director Sule, I didn't expect you to personally take charge this time."
After all, it wasn't something one would trust to just anyone.
Sule nodded toward a tall figure across from her.
"This is Plamon Eaton, the head of the neutron jammer research group."
"Hello."
He Kui gave a military salute, somewhat clumsily, but he managed to make it look presentable. To become the head of the neutron jammer research group required not only talent but also a solid foundation; this was truly one of the most classified research groups in PLANT. Getting in was as difficult as climbing to the sky, but the benefits were quite good.
"Hey, no need to be so formal."
The tall man waved his hand amiably.
"You don't need to salute; we don't have so many requirements at work. It feels a bit awkward."
"Alright, Mr. Eaton."
"Nice job, you're the new addition to their group."
"Of course."
Sule shrugged and led He Kui to follow the tall man aboard the ship.
