Chapter 62: Isaiah's Deathtrap (Part 2)
This immediately left everyone present baffled.
"But these memories will return," said the Netherworld Envoy, "The soul, unlike the body, eventually recovers its lost parts bit by bit."
"How long will it take this time?" asked the leading Guardian, "Another week or two?"
"Not at all. Once the soul's total return is completed, the remaining small parts will come back quickly," the Netherworld Envoy said with a smile, "Just a day or two."
A day or two... but two days later is the start date of the Heavenly Sound Obedience.
This timing is indeed somewhat awkward, but at that moment, the Prison Director spoke again, directly looking at Isaiah: "I haven't forgotten everything. I still remember the one who attacked me had a very special eye... It was an eye exactly like yours, and in the end, he used that eye to tear me apart."
In an instant, everyone looked at Isaiah's eyes.
Isaiah had cast a spell on his right eye to make it look indistinguishable from a normal eye.
Yet, whether it was the effect of the Prison Director's words or if that eye was truly special, everyone felt that Isaiah's eyes were unfathomably deep, like a night sky without an end.
"Prison Director," Isaiah remained calm, "You're suspecting me just based on an eye? If I'm not mistaken, the eye you mentioned should be the left eye of Visas that Rhein lost. It's on Ulu, not on me, which also corroborates my previous suspicion... Ulu is right here."
Here, Isaiah played a little trick.
Visas's Corpse Blocks have a strictly corresponding position, with the left eye only fitting into the left socket; placing it in the right eye position would be useless.
So if the Prison Director believed it was the left eye that killed him, Isaiah could thereby prove his innocence since his left eye was his own. Isaiah could safeguard his right eye and clear his suspicion, as no one but the few in Taoyuan Village knew about the right eye.
"But how do I remember it was the right eye?" the Prison Director slowly spoke.
The atmosphere turned tense again.
But Isaiah still had a countermeasure, and he slowly said, "Right eye? The intelligence Rhein submitted had no mention of a right eye. Where do you think this right eye came from? Could it be that you remembered it incorrectly?"
This was also the reaction of most people present.
Right eye, where did the right eye come from?
At least, only a few had suspicions, all glancing at Isaiah's right eye.
"Prison Director, you must think clearly." Isaiah did not give everyone much time to observe his right eye and continued speaking, "The person who tried to assassinate you tonight was powerful and lurking in the shadows. Now there's a good chance I'm the only person who can oppose him, and if you execute me, there won't be anyone left to stop him."
"Is that so?" The Prison Director spoke slowly, "Then why can't I activate the Heavenly Voice Obedience twice?"
Isaiah squinted his eyes again.
"Don't look at me like that, Mr. Isaiah," the Prison Director said, "I told you the pros and cons clearly when you first got here, but you refused me."
"How can I give you something I don't have?" Isaiah's voice also turned cold.
"I'm tired of wasting my effort on this matter." The Prison Director said, "Earlier, I was unwilling to activate the Heavenly Voice Obedience twice in succession only because the cost was too high. But tonight, the strength that person displayed made me realize that now is not the time to worry about cost and consequence; someone like that must not be allowed to live. Even at a great cost, the gods will forgive me, and even if they can't, this must be done. I'm willing to bear this infamy."
Isaiah almost laughed out of anger, "What does reputation mean to you?"
"It means nothing," the Prison Director said, slowly looking into Isaiah's eyes, "So I can carry on without burden... Now then, Mr. Isaiah, do you wish to prove your innocence with your death?"
Until now, Isaiah finally realized that tonight's assassination attempt on the Prison Director by the Hand Eye was not merely to throw the blame onto him.
So this might not have been the Hand Eye's initial intention, but ultimately it made the Prison Director realize the power of the Hand Eye, shifting from a choice between him and the Hand Eye to sending both away together.
Indeed, this is truly the Prison Director of the Abyss Prison; he is the incarnation of the gods' will.
A single name could lead to the death of thousands; two names would merely double that number.
If this hidden threat could be eliminated, even a third or fourth name would be dealt with without hesitation by the Prison Director.
And Isaiah, who was most suspected, would be the first sacrifice.
Isaiah stared hard at the Prison Director, at this moment truly considering flipping the table.
But he also knew that flipping the table was impossible, at least not now, because he didn't know the workings of Heavenly Voice Obedience and it was highly probable that he would be directly obliterated by the gods' will once he tried to act.
After obtaining this eye, Isaiah had never felt pushed to the limit before.
But now, he realized that there are indeed things in this world that even this eye couldn't accomplish.
In that instant, an overwhelming sense of powerlessness and rage surged within Isaiah, an indescribable aura emanated from his body, making everyone feel as if he were a volcano about to erupt, and an oppressive heat and panic spread through each person's heart.
