Chapter 257: Odin Visits the Ancient One (Part 1)
Odin listened to Thor's account before speaking.
"Thor, I have never heard of such a divine artifact existing on Midgard. Perhaps it's nothing more than a trick by sorcerers to amuse mortals.
In the universe, resurrecting a god — or even a mortal — is not impossible. But the price for such a feat might be more than all of Asgard could bear."
Odin knew very well that if Loki was truly dead, not even gathering all six Infinity Stones could bring him back — and the price of the Soul Stone was something even he could not pay.
Seeing that his father did not believe him, Thor said earnestly,
"I want to try. If it's real, I can bring my brother back.
If it's fake… then at least it will be the last thing I do for Loki."
When Odin saw that Thor was determined to go to Midgard in search of the Dragon Balls, and heard him call it his final act for his brother, he did not stop him. He only said,
"Thor, but you destroyed the Bifröst."
Thor froze for a moment. Yes — he had destroyed the Bifröst, meaning he could no longer travel directly to Earth.
His expression dimmed, the realization weighing heavily on him.
Odin continued,
"Repairing the Bifröst is a difficult and time-consuming task. It will take a great deal of time.
And right now, I have no spare Dark Cosmic Energy to send you directly to Earth. You will have to wait."
Hearing that the Bifröst could be repaired brought some light back to Thor's face.
"Father, no matter how long it takes, I can wait. If I can gather the Dragon Balls and revive Loki, it will all be worth it."
Odin looked at his son's excitement and said slowly,
"When the Nine Realms learn the Bifröst has been destroyed, unrest will soon follow. Even after it is repaired, you won't have much peace."
Thor dismissed the concern.
"Then I'll quell the unrest. And when I do, I can bring Loki along — just like when we were young — and together we'll put down anyone foolish enough to start a war."
Seeing the light in his son's eyes, Odin said no more. He patted Thor's shoulder and turned away. This matter, he needed to confirm with the Ancient One.
Thor watched his father leave, then walked toward the shattered end of the Bifröst where Heimdall was stationed.
"Has Earth been lost to us completely?"
"No," Heimdall replied. "There is always hope."
Thor nodded.
"Father says the Bifröst can be repaired, but for now we'll lose contact.
Can you see her?"
"I can," Heimdall said.
"What is she doing?" Thor asked.
"She's looking for you," Heimdall replied.
A smile touched Thor's lips.
"Heimdall, I want to ask you a favor."
"To watch over her?" Heimdall guessed.
Thor shook his head.
"On Earth, there's a treasure called the Dragon Balls — seven in total. They are spherical, with one to seven five-pointed stars inside, representing the One-Star to Seven-Star Balls.
I want you to use your sight to search for them on Earth. When the Bifröst is repaired, I want to go there immediately to gather them.
This means a great deal to me, Heimdall."
Heimdall sighed.
"Thor, my sight is not without limits. I will try to help you search, but do not place too much hope on it. Many things, and many means, can block my vision."
He knew well that even Loki could hide from his gaze.
Thor nodded.
"Whatever the outcome, you have my thanks."
…
Meanwhile.
Odin did not return to his chambers or the banquet hall. Instead, he used what little Dark Matter energy he had left to send himself directly to the Ancient One's Kamar-Taj.
The Ancient One looked at the All-Father as though she had been expecting him. On the table before her sat two cups of tea.
"You've come," she said.
"I have," Odin replied, taking a seat.
The Ancient One gestured to the tea.
"Please."
Odin took a sip, then set the cup down.
"Ancient One, how much do you know about the Dragon Balls? Are they truly real, or just a trick some sorcerers use to deceive?"
She showed no surprise at his question. With a wave of her hand, seven Dragon Balls appeared in the air. They shimmered, then transformed into a colossal Eastern dragon that blotted out the sky.
"The Seven Dragon Balls are real. They possess unimaginable power, able to grant any wish."
Seeing this display, and hearing her words, Odin rose to his feet, his expression grave.
"Ancient One, do you realize what you're saying?"
She smiled slightly.
"I know exactly what I'm saying. Isn't this the answer you came to confirm?"
Odin's gaze hardened.
"You know that news of the Dragon Balls will bring disaster to Earth. They would be an even greater temptation than the Infinity Stones."
The Ancient One dismissed the projection with another wave of her hand.
"The Dragon Balls have their own guardian. That is not my concern."
Odin thought for a moment before asking,
"What is the price of making a wish with them?"
"I don't know," she said, shaking her head.
"What do you mean you don't know?" Odin pressed.
The Ancient One sipped her tea and explained,
"From what I have observed, there have been two wish-makers so far, and neither paid any price.
One man revived his deceased wife — yet the Hell Dimension and the god who rules over death did not react, as though it never happened.
The other was a being who erased the flaws of her race, again without paying any price.
They merely passed the guardian's test."
Odin's single eye widened.
"May I meet this guardian? I have a wish I need granted. My son Loki has fallen into the cosmic abyss, and I want to bring him back."
But the Ancient One refused him outright.
"No."
