Chapter 30: The Battle of Galud
The air grew heavier with each step as the team neared the gates of Galud. What had once been a bustling, prosperous town now loomed dark and foreboding, its silence almost deafening. The massive wooden gates were ajar, their edges splintered and warped as though something unnatural had forced them open.
Adrian Falter walked at the center of the group, his sword drawn, his senses heightened. Beside him, Captain Mohan's hands flexed inside his gauntlets, the faint shimmer of his aura betraying his readiness for a fight.
Seraphina kept close to Adrian, her staff glowing faintly with protective magic. "The energy here… it feels wrong," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"It's not just wrong," Kiera murmured, running a hand along a blackened tree trunk. "The land is sick. It's as if the life here has been drained entirely."
Kael moved ahead of the group, his bow drawn and his sharp eyes scanning the shadows. "We're not alone," he said softly, freezing mid-step.
The others stopped, following Kael's gaze. Shapes moved in the alleyways and behind broken windows—figures that once might have been human. Their movements were jerky and unnatural, their glowing crimson eyes peering out from the darkness.
"Leonard's puppets," Mohan said grimly. "He's twisted the people of this town into his servants. Be ready—they won't hold back."
* * *
The team pressed forward into Galud. The once-vibrant streets were now a patchwork of decay, the cobblestones cracked and stained with ominous black scorch marks. The air carried a stifling weight, each breath feeling heavier than the last.
Adrian's heart sank as he surveyed the desolation. This wasn't the town he remembered. Galud had been flawed, yes, but alive. Now it was a hollow shell.
"Do you think there are any survivors?" Seraphina asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Adrian hesitated. "If there are, we'll find them. We have to."
Kael's hand shot up, signaling the group to stop. A faint sound—a low, guttural growl—rippled through the air.
"Movement to our left," Kael said, notching an arrow.
The growls grew louder as several corrupted figures stepped into the open. Their faces were contorted with pain and malice, their limbs unnaturally elongated.
Adrian raised his sword. "Hold the line. We don't split up."
The creatures lunged, and the fight began.
After dispatching the minions, the team reached the central square. At its center stood a crumbling fountain, and atop it was Leonard Durk.
He was unrecognizable. His once-proud bearing had given way to a twisted form, his skin pale and veined with crimson energy. His eyes burned like coals, and his tattered clothing hung loosely on his grotesquely altered body.
Around him knelt more of his corrupted minions, their heads bowed as if in reverence.
Leonard's lips curled into a sneer as he saw the group approach. "Ah, the empire's lapdogs," he said, his voice resonating with an unnatural echo. "And leading them… Adrian Falter. The man who stole everything from me."
Adrian stepped forward, his sword at the ready. "Leonard, stop this. It doesn't have to end this way. Let us help you."
"Help me?" Leonard's laugh was harsh and bitter. "You? You're the reason my life is in ruins! My son—my Terrance—is dead because of you!"
Adrian's jaw tightened, but he kept his voice steady. "Terrance attacked me. I didn't want to kill him, but he left me no choice."
"Liar!" Leonard's roar shook the ground, cracks spidering out from where he stood. "You took him from me! And with him, you destroyed everything I built. The emperor seized on his death to tear down my power, and now… now I've lost it all!"
"This isn't about Terrance anymore," Mohan said, his voice firm. "You let your grief and anger twist you into this. You made a deal with the demons, Leonard. Look at what you've become."
"I've become free," Leonard spat. "Free from the empire's chains. Free from their judgment. And I'll show you all what true freedom looks like."
With a roar, Leonard leapt from the fountain, his claws glowing with dark energy. His minions sprang to life, charging at the team with unnatural speed.
"Take the minions!" Mohan shouted. "Adrian and I will handle Leonard!"
Kael moved with precision, his arrows striking down the closest minions before they could reach the group. Kiera summoned roots from the ground, entangling the legs of several attackers, while Seraphina's golden light shielded the group from incoming strikes.
Mohan intercepted Leonard's first attack, his gauntlets clashing against the corrupted baron's claws in a shower of sparks. "You've let the demons consume you, Leonard!" Mohan growled. "You're not powerful—you're their puppet!"
Leonard's eyes flared. "I am no one's puppet!" he snarled, swiping at Mohan with enough force to send him skidding back.
Adrian lunged, his blade aimed for Leonard's exposed side. But Leonard twisted unnaturally, his claws raking across Adrian's armor and sending him staggering.
"You're weak, Adrian!" Leonard sneered. "You don't deserve the power you wield!"
Adrian gritted his teeth, forcing himself to stay focused. He couldn't let Leonard's taunts distract him.
As Leonard pressed the attack, Adrian found himself on the defensive. Each strike from the corrupted baron was stronger and faster than the last.
"Adrian!" Mohan called, stepping in to deflect a particularly vicious blow. "Keep your head in the fight!"
Adrian nodded, steadying his breathing. He couldn't afford to let Leonard dictate the battle. He needed to find an opening.
Mohan launched a flurry of strikes, his gauntlets glowing brighter with each punch. Leonard snarled, staggering under the barrage but refusing to go down.
Adrian seized the moment. Summoning his strength, he activated his Battle Roar. Energy surged through him, amplifying his speed and power. With a cry, he struck at Leonard's legs, forcing the corrupted baron to stumble.
"Now!" Adrian shouted.
Mohan didn't hesitate. Channeling all his energy into his gauntlets, he delivered a devastating uppercut. The impact sent Leonard crashing into the fountain, shattering the stone and leaving the baron momentarily dazed.
Leonard's Last Stand
But Leonard wasn't finished. His crimson eyes burned brighter as his body began to convulse. The ground beneath him cracked, and his minions dissolved into shadowy tendrils that flowed into his body.
"You think this is over?" Leonard growled, his voice distorted and inhuman. "I'll show you true strength!"
His form began to change, his muscles swelling and his claws elongating. His body twisted into a monstrous fusion of man and demon, towering over the team.
Mohan and Adrian exchanged a grim look.
"This is it," Mohan said, his voice steady. "We end it now."
Adrian nodded, his grip on his sword tightening. "Together."
As Leonard's monstrous form loomed over them, the oppressive darkness grew thicker. The team regrouped, their weapons ready, their resolve unwavering.
Leonard let out a deafening roar, his transformation complete. The fight for Galud was far from over—but Adrian and his team stood firm, determined to bring an end to the baron's reign of terror.
