Chapter 29: Into the Town of Galud
The sun rose over Arvendale, casting long golden rays across the camp as soldiers stirred awake. The soft clang of armor and the murmur of voices blended with the early morning stillness. Adrian Falter stood near the mess tent, arms crossed, his gaze distant. The events of the past days—the battles, the crystal, and the faint unease that gnawed at him—played over and over in his mind.
He barely noticed the arrival of a messenger until the man stumbled forward, panting and clutching a sealed letter. Within minutes, Adrian was summoned to the command tent.
The command tent was tense, filled with officers murmuring in low voices. At the center of it all stood Rowan, Adrian's mentor, his face lined with worry. Captain Mohan sat nearby, his expression unreadable but focused.
"Adrian," Rowan said, his voice calm but edged with gravity. "We have a situation. Gather your team—this can't wait."
Within an hour, Adrian stood alongside his core team in the tent. Mohan leaned back in his chair, his gauntlets resting on the table. Seraphina, Kiera, Kael, and Lucas surrounded the map-laden table, their faces mirroring the tension in the room.
Rowan began without preamble. "We've received troubling reports from the Town of Galud. Knights sent to investigate haven't been able to pass its outskirts. Something—or someone—is stopping them."
Seraphina furrowed her brow. "Stopping them how? Demonic forces?"
Rowan shook his head. "It's not clear. The knights described an oppressive energy surrounding the town, unlike anything we've encountered before."
Adrian frowned. "What about the townsfolk? Have we heard anything from inside?"
"Nothing since two nights ago," Rowan replied, his jaw tightening. "The silence is concerning."
Rowan unfolded a map, tracing a line to Galud. "This isn't just about demonic interference. Leonard Durk, the town's lord, has been a problem for years. His corruption and exploitation pushed Galud to its breaking point. When the empire decided to act, Leonard saw it as a betrayal."
Mohan crossed his arms. "We were sent to deal with that fallout. But there's more to this, isn't there?"
Rowan hesitated, his eyes flicking to Adrian. "Yes. Terrance Durk—Leonard's son—was involved in several scandals. When the empire began its investigation, Terrance resisted, and… he was killed during an altercation."
The weight of the room shifted toward Adrian. He met their gazes evenly. "I killed him," he said plainly. "Terrance attacked me. I defended myself, and he didn't survive."
Rowan's voice softened. "You did what was necessary. But Leonard saw it differently. His son's death shattered him. That's when we believe he turned to… darker methods."
Kiera's voice trembled slightly. "Demonic powers?"
Rowan nodded. "We think Leonard made a pact. Whatever he's become, it's not human anymore. And it's consuming the town."
The team exchanged uneasy glances as Rowan's words hung in the air. The idea of a man so thoroughly corrupted was unsettling, even to those familiar with the horrors of the demons.
Kael leaned forward, his expression grim. "If the knights can't even get close to Galud, how do we stand a chance?"
Rowan's voice was firm. "We're not ordinary knights. You've faced demons and won. This is no different. But we must act quickly. If we delay, Leonard's influence could spread beyond the town."
Mohan nodded. "Agreed. A direct march risks alerting Leonard, but waiting gives him more time to consolidate power."
Rowan gave a decisive nod. "We leave today. Adrian, Mohan—you'll lead the mission. Gather your team and prepare to depart in a few hours."
Adrian felt the weight of the responsibility settle on his shoulders. "Understood," he said, his voice steady.

The camp sprang into action. Soldiers packed supplies, secured wagons, and readied their weapons with a sense of grim urgency. Adrian moved through the organized chaos, ensuring his team was prepared.
As he adjusted the straps of his armor, Seraphina approached, her staff resting lightly against her shoulder. "Do you think we'll get there in time?" she asked, her voice laced with worry.
"We don't have a choice," Adrian replied, his tone firm. "We can't let Leonard—or whatever he's become—destroy Galud."
Kiera joined them, her staff glowing faintly with druidic energy. "The land around Galud must be suffering," she said softly. "If the corruption is spreading, we'll feel it long before we see it."
Kael, not far behind, checked the tension on his bowstring. "If Leonard's gone full demon, this won't be a simple fight. But we've handled worse."
Adrian managed a small, reassuring smile. "We'll handle this, too."

By midday, the soldiers were assembled, their formations disciplined but tense. At the head of the column stood Adrian and Mohan, their team close behind. Rowan watched from the edge of the camp, his sharp gaze meeting Adrian's as the march began.
"Lead well," Rowan said simply, his voice carrying over the distance.
Adrian nodded, a silent promise passing between them.
As the column moved out, the air grew heavier with each step. The rolling hills gave way to darker, more oppressive terrain. Even the soldiers' chatter faded into uneasy silence.
Walking alongside Mohan, Adrian broke the silence. "Leonard wasn't always like this," he said quietly. "He was cruel, yes, but this…"
Mohan glanced at him, his gauntlets glinting faintly in the dimming light. "No one starts like this. But demons prey on our worst traits. Fear, anger, pride—they twist them into something monstrous."
Adrian hesitated. "Do you think there's any part of him left? Any chance we can save him?"
Mohan's expression hardened. "I don't know. But if he's beyond saving, we can't afford to hesitate. The lives of everyone in that town—and beyond—depend on us."
Adrian nodded, the weight of Mohan's words settling heavily on him. He had seen the consequences of hesitation before. He wouldn't let it happen again.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the outskirts of Galud came into view. The air was thick, oppressive, as if the very land itself recoiled from the corruption spreading within. Soldiers shifted uneasily, their hands tightening around their weapons.
Adrian raised a hand, signaling the column to halt. Turning to his team, he spoke with quiet resolve. "This is it. Whatever's waiting for us in Galud, we face it together. Watch each other's backs, and stay sharp."
Mohan stepped forward, his voice steady. "No heroics. No lone wolves. We do this as a team."
The soldiers nodded, their resolve hardening. With a deep breath, Adrian turned back toward the town, his jaw set.
"Let's move," he said.
The march resumed, their steps heavy with purpose. As the shadow of Galud loomed closer, Adrian's thoughts turned to the people trapped inside, to Leonard, and to the battle ahead.
Whatever awaited them in Galud, they would face it. Together.
