Chapter 540: The First Patient

Inside the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) room.

Wang Yan sat in the cold and quiet office with the middle-aged doctor. By now, Wang Yan already knew that the middle-aged doctor was named Feng Wei, who had been working at this hospital for thirty years, living an honest and straightforward life.

Thinking about it, if he weren't an honest person, how could he work for thirty years in the most inconspicuous, least promising TCM consulting room at the hospital?

At this moment, Feng Wei sighed and said, "Sigh, Wang, let me tell you, you're new here, but you have to listen to me. If a patient comes in, we have to make the illness sound as serious as possible, prescribe more medicine, and prescribe expensive medicine."

"Why?"

"It's simple. Why does our TCM department have no status in the hospital? It's because we make too little money. Look at Western medicine; just one test costs hundreds, while our prescriptions for a week only cost a few hundred. How can we compete with them?"

"But I believe that healing patients should be the first priority for a doctor, not making money," Wang Yan replied lightly.

"Sigh," Feng Wei sighed again and said, "You're not wrong. I thought the same way when I was young; otherwise, I wouldn't have stayed in the TCM room for so long. Sigh, all the other colleagues transferred to the Western medicine department, leaving only me... Learn from me and don't go down my old path."

Upon hearing this, Wang Yan fully understood that Feng Wei wasn't a bad person; he had just been tormented by cruel reality over the years.

Just then, there was shouting coming from outside the door: "Quick, quick, this is the TCM room."

"This is it; hurry, open the door."

With the noise, footsteps grew closer and closer.

Feng Wei stood up excitedly, saying, "They're here, there are patients, and more than one at that. I'll go open the door for them."

Feng Wei got up to walk to the door to open it, but halfway there, he immediately retreated to sit down on the chair and shook his head, saying: "No, no, I must appear more dignified, more like a TCM doctor, so people will respect me. But no, what if the patients can't find the door? I'd better open it for them."

Having said that, Feng Wei again headed toward the door, but after hesitating for a moment, he returned once more.

Watching Feng Wei waver back and forth, anxiously rubbing his hands with excitement, it didn't look like he was about to see patients, but rather like he was about to enter a bridal chamber.

At that moment, the door suddenly swung open with a "bang" as four or five people rushed in.

Feng Wei widened his eyes in excitement, thinking: "No business all year, and today we hit the jackpot with four or five patients. I've struck gold."

The five people who burst in looked extremely anxious, asking right away, "Where's the doctor? Who's the doctor?"

Feng Wei coughed, slowly sat down, and pompously said, "I'm the one. What's your ailment?"

A thirty-year-old pure-looking young lady holding a baby rushed to Feng Wei's side, hastily saying, "Doctor, it's bad; after giving birth, the milk won't come out, it's going to burst."

Upon hearing this, Feng Wei immediately relaxed, thinking: I thought it was something serious, turns out it's just engorgement.

With thirty years of TCM experience, Feng Wei was naturally quite skilled. He knew that after childbirth, if the mother's milk was too abundant and the baby nursed insufficiently, it could accumulate inside, causing mild swelling or severe inflammation and fever.

So, with confidence, Feng Wei raised his hand to grope the young lady's chest and pressed it, then said doubtfully, "This isn't right; you don't seem engorged at all, there's no milk?"

Before Feng Wei could finish, the young lady's eyes filled with anger, and she suddenly slapped him across the face.

Stunned, Feng Wei clutched his face, exclaiming, "Why did you hit me?"

The young lady scolded, "You pervert."

Feng Wei said with a bitter smile, "I'm a doctor, and you're engorged. It's perfectly normal for me to examine you."

The young lady slapped Feng Wei again and angrily said, "I'm not the one engorged; I'm the baby's aunt."

Upon hearing this, Feng Wei was nearly driven to tears. This young lady came in with the baby, didn't clarify, and how was he supposed to know she wasn't the baby's mother? These slaps were incredibly unjust.

Just then, the door was once again swung open, and a stretcher was carried in with an obese woman lying on it.

The obese woman had disheveled hair, a red face, and purple lips, clearly having a high fever.

At this sight, Feng Wei disregarded the pain on his face, jumped up in shock, and screamed at the patient: "She's burning up like that? Why bring her to the TCM department? Take her to emergency for an IV; she'll die if not treated."

Feng Wei was right, such a high fever wasn't something TCM could treat. Delaying any further might lead to the patient burning to death.

Meanwhile, in Hua Wulian's office, the bald doctor stood in front of Hua Wulian, with a grin, saying: "Dr. Hua, your move is brilliant. Why didn't I think of it? Pushing a high-fever patient to the TCM department, today Wang Yan is bound to fall into your hands."

Hua Wulian smirked in satisfaction: "Of course. This brat dared to mess up my plans? Hmph, never thought he'd end up in my control."

The bald doctor nodded quickly and said: "Indeed, indeed, who dares provoke our Young Dean in this hospital?"

Hua Wulian glared and said, "Not just in this hospital, but throughout Wanghai City, who dares provoke me?"

The bald doctor nodded frantically again.

Hua Wulian continued: "Go down and keep a close watch. Once the patient dies, blame it on Wang Yan, making it impossible for him to absolve himself."

The bald doctor said: "Rest assured, I'm best at handling such matters."

With that, the bald doctor maliciously left Hua Wulian's office and headed towards the TCM room on the first floor.

By this time, the small TCM room was packed with people. Besides the stretcher, the female patient was accompanied by seven or eight relatives, including the young aunt Feng Wei had offended earlier and several stout men.

Upon seeing Feng Wei trying to send the patient away, one of the stout men grabbed his shirt collar and cursed: "We just came from the emergency room, and they said this condition can only be treated by TCM, they can't handle it, so hurry up and treat it."

Hearing this, Feng Wei was almost crying, thinking: Who's setting me up? How could TCM cure such a high fever? Are they making me the scapegoat? Delaying any further, and if the patient dies here, I'll be in huge trouble.

At a loss, Feng Wei suddenly heard Wang Yan say, "Let me check her."
