Chapter 979: Why Did You Come Back?

Two masses of green light shot towards Cook and the young man at a lightning fast speed. Cook barely had time to react before the green light condensed, erupting into a silver light mixed with red. The scorching heat enveloped Cook, who despite being battle-hardened, couldn't respond in time and was immediately engulfed in the flames transformed by the red light.

The burning high temperature seemed to make the air boil. Even though Cook quickly covered himself with the power of thunder and lightning, he couldn't completely block the heat of the flames. Cook had no intention of withstanding it head-on; after protecting his body, he immediately pushed off the ground, shooting backwards. However, those flames clung to him like maggots on the bone, refusing to be shaken off, and instead, burned more fiercely due to Cook's movement. The flames suddenly intensified, along with a rise in temperature. Unable to bear the high heat of the flames, Cook let out a wail, his retreating body crashing down onto the ground, shattering it.

The other mass of green light attacking the young man was in a similar situation.

Seeing the young man enveloped by flames, El quickly darted to Shu's side, reaching out to grab Shu, who was adjusting his state with blood at the corner of his mouth: "Let's go." The two of them didn't even glance at the situation of the other three, immediately starting to flee through the ruins. At this time, if they didn't seize the chance to escape, they'd be real fools.

The two hadn't gotten far when they heard roars from behind them, a chilling aura sending shivers down their spines as they fled.

Breaking free from the flames, the young man glanced at Cook and the woman still trapped in the flames. He flicked his wrist, sending out two silver lights to extinguish their flames, then lunged with all his power towards Shu and El. His hatred was burning; he never expected these two guys to have such strange things.

Burning with rage, the young man had no intention to negotiate with the two anymore. After killing them, he could take Zhu Bufan back. Thinking of how the two escaped time and again right under his nose, the young man felt indignant, the fire of vexation in his heart burning more intensely.

Despite Shu and El doing their best to flee, they were wounded and hadn't gotten far; they hadn't put any distance between themselves and the young man. In the span of just a dozen breaths, the young man had closed in on them.

Seeing the young man catch up, El couldn't afford to hold back anymore. With a wave of his hand, he fired another green light, the same kind he tossed earlier. He carried only ten of these bizarre jade tokens, and four had already been used. If he couldn't force the young man back, they wouldn't be returning to the fringe region alive tonight.

The green light approached, and the young man flicked a silver light to bounce it away, then hunched his body and accelerated again, nearly closing the distance to Shu and El.

"You both have to die." The young man spat those seven words through gritted teeth, his expression turning ferocious in an instant, looking like an evil ghost crawling out of hell with the blood scabs on his face.

As the young man approached, the killing intent on him caused Shu and El's bodies to stiffen, a tangible chill sweeping over them. Locking eyes while fleeing, Shu and El saw the worried look in each other's eyes, but by now, trying to escape the young man's pursuit was extremely challenging. El slapped Shu on the back, propelling him with wind force, then turned to launch an attack, his right palm, charged with energy, striking aimed at the young man's face.

El's move was extremely sudden, and the young man, eager in pursuit, was caught off guard by the direct hit. From El's palm spewed green light, rapidly spinning wind force twisting the young man's body. Yet, it failed to harm him. Upon this sudden attack, the young man roared in anger, wanting to retaliate but feeling heat on his face, realizing something was wrong, he wanted to distance himself from El but was a step too slow.

El shouted low: "Break." A silver light mixed with red light pierced through the green light, spitting out a flame.

The scorching high temperature reappeared, burning El's right hand as well. As soon as the flame appeared, El quickly retracted his right hand, then with a push of the wind force, he dashed towards where Shu was fleeing. Although this ambush might not injure the young man, it could at least hinder him a bit. As El barely got away, he heard the sound of wind, followed by lightning striking the ground in front of him, stirring up a dust cloud.

The young man's reinforcement finally caught up. Stalled by the lightning strike, El's pace slowed a bit, and it was just then that the flame-powered woman caught up. As soon as she was close, her left-hand dagger was aimed at El's abdomen, with no wind blade in sight, just the whistling wind heard by El.

But El was not one to stand and wait for death. Having been caught up, he could only fight. With a cold snort, El charged his left hand with wind force, reaching for the woman's dagger coming at him while his right hand gathered power, forming a ball of green light which he thrust at her. The green light shot out of his hand, speeding towards the woman.

Having suffered once before, the woman exclaimed as the green light shot at her, urgently redirecting her dagger aimed at El, slamming it downward to the ground, forcibly altering her trajectory to dodge the green light. As the woman changed her trajectory, El's left hand, initially reaching for the dagger, suddenly shifted direction to strike at her back.

Before El could land a strike, he suddenly heard the sound of thunder, causing chills on his back. Just when he intended to evade, he felt a sharp pain at his back, followed by a sense of paralysis. That electrifying Cook had arrived.

Suddenly attacked, El cried out in pain, losing control of his body momentarily, even the otherwise flowing wind force stalling, plummeting him to the ground with a thud. By then, the woman also turned back, killing intent flashing in her eyes, raising her right-hand dagger towards El's neck. Powerless to evade the woman's attack, El could only watch as her dagger, glinting with green, edged closer to his neck. He closed his eyes, awaiting death.

A wind blade brushed past El's nose, with a clink knocking the woman's dagger away. El felt the chill from the dagger suddenly vanish, quickly opening his eyes to see the scene of the woman's dagger getting knocked away. He let out a breath, cursing inwardly. At such a time, the only one who'd use wind force and come to his rescue could only be Shu, no one else.

"You idiot, why come back after running away?" El cursed furiously. The dissipating electric energy allowed El to regain control over his body, urgently flipping over a few times, then with a summon of wind force, he floated into the air again.

Shu wore an indescribable smile, glancing at El, saying, "If we die, we die. Having someone to accompany you in death isn't a bad thing either."

Before El could respond, another crash of thunder echoed, a thunder light was upon him. El quickly turned around, then slapped his left hand charged with wind force towards the incoming thunder light. The green light flickered, breaking the thunder light apart. With a cold gaze directed at Cook, the one who launched the sneak attack, El's heart only grew colder. Even if death is certain, I'm taking you with me. This vicious thought emerged in El's mind as he transformed, diving straight towards Cook. At this moment, he ignored the young man and the woman, or Shu who came to rescue him. His eyes were solely on Cook, emitting thunder light all over.

Feeling like a mouse eyed by a cat, Cook couldn't help but shiver, seeing nothing but endless green light, his ears filled with the sound of the wind. At this moment, Cook believed he entered a pure world of wind, devoid of anything else. Startled, Cook quickly activated the thunder power within him, only to realize what he saw was an illusion. El, the one creating the mirage, was pouncing towards him at an incredibly bizarre speed.
