Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 16: Jake

Walking hand in hand with Leah down the beach, she stopped and turned towards him.

"Thanks, thanks for being so patient with me and my dad," said Leah genuinely moved by his endless tolerance and understanding.

"What can I say, I'm in love," he chuckled putting a smile on her face, and she kissed him.

"As am I," she whispered.

"I think he's finally coming around to the idea with help from my mom," said Leah.

"She's a good mom," said Dean.

"Mhm, damn right, she's the best," said Leah.

He leaned down and kissed her.

"When can I ride you again?" she asked thinking of their last run together.

"Babe, you can ride me whenever you want," Dean smirked.

She playfully smacked him, "That's not what I meant and you know it."

"How about right now?" asked Dean.

"Need to get the rope," said Leah.

"We can do that, and maybe go and visit our beach and see how the seals are getting along," said Dean.

"Sounds good to me, hopefully it's sunny up there," said Leah.

"Yeah, one day far in the future mind you, I'd like us to move somewhere with more sun," said Dean.

"It would be nice," said Leah.

She saw him frown, "What?"

Then Sam showed up with Jared locking eyes with Dean.

"No, what do they want?" asked Leah, worried her day would be ruined.

"Leah, Dean," Sam greeted.

"What do you want?" she asked, feeling annoyed.

"Sorry to disturb, just came to tell you Jacob will be shifting soon, he's at home with his dad, who's trying to ease him into it," said Sam.

"Doesn't look good, first time I've ever seen Jake angry," said Jared.

"What about when he was arguing with Paul?" asked Leah having heard the story.

"Nah, that was more annoyed than angry, but now he's genuinely angry, maybe something went wrong with his wolf," said Jared.

"Or his hormones," said Sam recalling Jake's infatuation with Bella.

Dean snorted, "Either way, keep an eye on him, we'll know in time what's going on with him."

"Already on it, Have Embry watching him from afar with Paul as backup... I know, I know, I told Paul only to act if necessary, and I'll relieve him as soon as I get back," said Sam answering their unspoken thoughts.

"Seems like you got things covered, I'm going to take Leah on a little trip, might not be back until tomorrow," said Dean.

"Don't worry, I doubt he'll change today anyway, come on Jared let's go before Paul does something stupid," said Sam.

Jared snorted, "Not possible."

Dean looked over to Leah, "You ready?"

Leah grinned, "Always."

It was the first time she had seen such a beautiful sunset, and sleeping under the stars and moon, where it helped having a warm body blanket for a fiancé keeping the chill at bay.

...

Sam was waiting when they arrived back at the reservation the following afternoon.

"Good, your back, maybe you can help wrangle Jake in," said Sam having slipped into some shorts to greet them.

"I take it he's shifted then," said Dean.

"Yeah, turns out I was wrong. Shortly after you left he shifted, and it wasn't pretty, has a real problem with becoming a wolf. I mean we all had issues but this is different, he straight-up doesn't like it at all. I've taken steps to see him avoid Bella for now, but if we don't do something soon he's going to go rogue and do something we may all regret," said Sam.

"Where is he?" asked Dean, taking it all in stride.

"He's likely still in the woods blowing off steam," said Sam.

"And Embry?" asked Dean.

"His presence has helped some, he's with Jake now keeping an eye on him," said Sam.

"I'll catch you later babe, duty calls," kissing her cheek goodbye.

"Later," she said seeing him off.

"Is he in wolf from?" asked Dean.

"No, he's punching trees again," said Sam.

"Then I guess we'll run rather than show up naked, lead the way," said Dean, picking up speed.

...

"Come on Jake, how long are you going to keep doing this, it's not that bad, being a wolf can be a lot of fun," said Embry.

"You don't understand, everything is ruined now, I'm just another monster!" yelled Jake punching another fist-sized chunk out of a tree.

"This is about Bella isn't it?" asked Embry knowingly.

"No," said Jake looking away, "Not just her," he mumbled.

"Jake," Embry stressed his name unconvinced.

"So what if it is," growled Jake.

"Look, I can't comment on how you feel about her but can't you see, now you can protect her better than you ever could before," said Embry

"But what kind of life is that, what can I give her now while I'm stuck like this," said Jake, punching another tree.

"As Embry said, protection, without it she'll likely not last long, especially with how she seeks them out," said Dean arriving.

"I would have protected her regardless, this does nothing but limit us to this place, this place she hates," said Jake bitterly.

"She can't hate it that much if she wants to be one of them," said Sam.

"What! She would never!" yelled Jake.

"You don't go out with something like that unless you want to be one of them," said Dean.

"No, you're lying," Jake denied, "Why would she want to? How could she do that? What about her family?"

"This is becoming obsessive, you're not even going out with her," said Sam.

"Only because he did something to her!" shouted Jake, punching a tree and sending bark flying.

"This isn't like you Jake, this anger, you know who you're acting like right now?" asked Embry.

Jake tilts his head in anticipation.

"Paul," said Embry flatly.

"Paul? Screw you," Jake spat.

"Close, but he says fuck you," Embry laughed, lightening the mood as Jakes's mouth twitched.

"Look I need time, this is a lot for me right now, just, just give me time," said Jake walking away.

"Let him go," said Dean, stopping Embry from following him, "He'll come around."

"Not like he has a choice," Sam huffed.

Dean scoffed, "Would you rather be human knowing what's out there?"

"No," Sam conceded, "Doesn't mean I can't empathize though."
