Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 15: King of Games

Dean was out at the border playing with Chipper and the dogs when Sam came through the tree line in his black wolf, shifting back.

"I thought I'd find you here, tell me, do you play with all the dogs or just this lot?" asked Sam.

"Did you need something?" asked Dean, not bothering to answer.

"I think we drove the newborns away for now, haven't seen signs of them since you and Paul took a couple of them out, and there are fewer reports of missing hikers in the nearby areas as well," said Sam.

"Good, doesn't mean it's over though until we hear or notice a major attack somewhere, we'll need to stay on high alert with an army being built so close to us," said Dean.

Sam frowned, "You sure about this? Could you be wrong?"

"Anything's possible, the question is are you willing to take the risk?" asked Dean.

"I hear ya, I just don't know if we're ready, we need more training, more time, more shifters," said Sam.

"We can increase training though it may strain the newcomers... all we can do is our best Sam," Dean sighed.

...

Late morning, early afternoon, Dean knocked on the Celarwater's door.

A good-natured Seth answered the door, "Dean!"

"Hey little brother, is your sister around?" asked Dean, hearing only a video game playing in the background.

"Nope, Emily came earlier, took her and mom shopping, don't know where dad went, just me here, want to play?" asked Seth.

"Sure, do you mind if I call the guys to join us?" asked Dean, thinking of making it a small party.

"Afraid you'll need backup?" Seth smirked.

"Remind me again who won our last go?" asked Dean.

"Tch, you got lucky, and I've been practicing, prepare to cry in despair at my might," said Seth exuberantly.

"Sure thing little buddy, go prepare the game, I'll get us some snacks and call the guys," said Dean rubbing his head.

Seth whacked his hand away, "Oh ho, it is so on!"

...

Leah and her mom came home to loud yelling from inside. Finding a rowdy group of boys gathered around the T.V. cheering the main video game combatants going at it with empty drinks and snacks everywhere.

"You can do it, beat his ass!" yelled Jared.

"Take the little shit down!" Paul roared.

"Paul, settle down," said Sam, "He's got this."

"No pressure Embry," said Dean massaging his shoulder in between rounds, "You saw the way he backed away right before coming for his favorite combo, that's your opening."

"Right," said Embry concentrating with all he's got.

"In your dreams chumps," said Seth with a haughty tone.

Sue and Leah glanced at one another and shook their heads,

"I'm not dealing with this, tell your fiance and his friends to clean up after themselves, preferably before your father gets home," said Sue heading to bed.

Leah sighed, "I will."

"Fuck! You were so close," cried Paul, along with others as Embry lost.

Seth celebrated, "Yeah! That's right bitches, whose the king!"

"Seth!" exclaimed Leah.

"Leah, when did you get here?" asked a startled Seth, his earlier mirth deflating.

"I better not have heard what I thought I heard," came Sue's voice from down the hall.

"Sorry, Mom." "Sorry, Mrs. Clearwater." Seth and the boys called out.

"Dean, you're supposed to be keeping them under control, I expect you all to clean up this mess before Dad gets home," said Leah.

"I assure you this is quite tame or have you forgotten the parties we've been to?" defended Dean with a smirk.

"Hey, none of that now, clean up, Dad's due back any moment, I don't want to hear any more yelling from him or you in this house, it's getting old," said Leah, taking no lip.

"You heard her boys, let's get this cleaned up," said Dean.

Thankfully they were done and out before Harry got home who was none the wiser to what took place.

...

The next day, Dean and the pack come across Jacob arguing with Paul, getting dangerously close to him.

Spotting Dean and the rest, Jacob backs off and leaves, shooting them a glare.

"What was that about?" asked Dean.

"Jacob's being a moody little bitch," Paul grunted.

"Well, he does look like one with that long hair," said Dean, getting a few laughs.

"Dean," said Sam shaking his head.

"What? You know it's true. This could be a good thing though, something's changed, when's the last time you've seen Jacob act like anything other than a high-on-life happy hippy, maybe he's finally going to shift," said Dean.

"Probably has to do with Bella, maybe she shot him down and that's why he's being a mopey bitch," said Jared.

"Guys," Sam sighed as they all laughed again.

All except an uncomfortable Embry hearing them make fun of his friend, missing the good old days when it was just him and Quil by his side.

Noticing this Dean put a comforting hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry Em, he'll be joining us in time and then you can put all that behind you."

"Yeah, I guess, I just wish they would shift soon," said Embry wistfully.

"Patience, they will," said Dean confidently.

"Okay, guys..." Dean begins, pausing with the rest as they hear dogs barking at the border.

"Alright you hear them, let's go," said Dean taking off with the pack, shifting once in the woods.

His golden wolf peaks back, making sure Embry's slim and sleek wolf with pale gray, black-spotted fur is keeping up.

Once at the border, Dean barks orders, (Check the dogs and sniff around, find out what set them off.)

(Leach over here!) shouts Jared.

(Doesn't seem like he stuck around long, must have left as soon as the dogs started barking,) said Sam.

(Follow it, Paul, Embry hang back in case he circles back,) said Dean.

(Got it,) said Embry feeling relieved he wouldn't have to fight yet. (Fine,) Paul agrees reluctantly.

Dean, Jared, and Sam tracked it to the forest edge.

(What now?) asked Jared.

(Nothing, we watch our borders, can't be heading into town,) said Dean turning around.

(What if someone from the tribe wanders into them in town?) asked Jared.

(We'll issue another tribal warning as usual, telling people to avoid town with a serial killer on the loose,) said Dean.

(That's what those were about? I never knew, and here I thought we were the murder capital of the world,) Jared joked.

(Yeah, it's the best we can do without telling everyone,) said Sam having recently learned of it too when discussing things with the council instead of Dean who tries to avoid places with Harry as much as possible.
