Chapter 53 Inevitable Choice
"Do we even need to divide into camps? It's three against five, and just by looking at those three, you can tell they're traitors—it's written all over their faces!" the female office worker commented on Glasses Man, Pretty Boy Du Qing, and the newcomer Feng Dahai.
"Big sister, can you really judge people's character by their appearance?" Glasses Man felt quite wronged.
Du Qing and Feng Dahai both turned to look at the female office worker.
"I was just speaking off the cuff, just a joke," the female office worker started to feel a bit guilty.
"Hmm, Miss, you're not wrong, though I despise traitors in life, I do enjoy playing such roles. As an actor, one should diversify their acting skills, and the ability to make the villain role you play detestable is a kind of talent," Feng Dahai spoke up, not angry in the least.
"There are a total of eight lots in the lot-drawing tube, one of which is labeled 'Traitor Leader,' while the others are blank lots."
"In this scene, the Traitor Leader is the protagonist. He dictates the entire plotline. Those who wish to play him can draw lots, those who don't may forfeit their right to this draw."
"You eight actors will draw lots in order of your ranks."
"Whoever draws the Traitor Leader, the lot-drawing ends then and there. The actor who draws the Traitor Leader can proactively choose an actor to be his henchman and secretly select an actor to be the undercover traitor amongst the six editors."
The director announced a few more details, holding the lot-drawing tube.
Although the drawing had not started yet, everyone present had a premonition.
It was destined to be Feng Dahai who would be the Traitor Leader, and for his henchman, it would undoubtedly be Pretty Boy Du Qing.
And as for the undercover traitor amongst the six editors, who else could it be?
Obviously, it was Glasses Man.
And for the Underground Worker, other than Li Teng, no one else seemed fit.
A confrontational performance that seemed to require wits and mystery-solving was stripped of any secrecy due to the actors' affinity with their roles.
The drawing began.
Feng Dahai, with the highest rank and authority, was to draw first according to the rules.
He willingly went to the side of the director, clearly not forsaking the chance to play the Traitor Leader.
Feng Dahai had three chances to draw.
If he did not draw the Traitor Leader within three attempts, it would then be the turn of Sunglasses Woman and Pretty Boy Du Qing, whoever had more credits, to try their luck.
This would continue until the person to play the Traitor Leader was determined.
In this act, playing the Traitor Leader had its advantages.
Being the main character of the scene, able to lead the plotline, was one thing, but he also had a very high safety factor, similar to the previous game's 'You Are the Ghost.'
The Traitor Leader could ignore others' choices, directly appointing a trusted henchman.
There would also be an insider within the editors' team to provide clues to him.
In the drama, the Traitor Leader could subject the newspaper editors to harsh torture.
Albeit for a drama, the acting here involved real action; the tortures were carried out for real, no faking it. Although there'd be treatment after the shooting, whatever injuries sustained could be healed, but who would want to be tortured willingly?
So, Feng Dahai, of course, wanted to choose the identity of the traitor.
If Li Teng were an Underground Worker, he could also use this opportunity to eliminate Li Teng and casually accomplish the guild's bounty hunting task, earning an additional 100 credits as a reward.
Of course, due to his guild membership and the confrontational nature of this act, even if he made use of the plot to kill Li Teng, he wouldn't be able to immediately embalm Li Teng and claim the bounty.
But sending Li Teng to Hell Mode, the result would be nearly the same.
After Li Teng falls in Hell Mode, he could easily claim that 100-credit bounty.
Everything went as Feng Dahai desired.
He drew the 'Traitor Leader' role on his second attempt.
As the director had already declared all seven other lots to be blank and that the drawing would cease immediately upon the Traitor Leader being drawn, Feng Dahai had no traps to fear like Guo's mother did in the previous round.
Being the Traitor Leader was an identity to be revealed publicly.
After showing everyone the lot with 'Traitor Leader' he'd drawn, he publicly announced the actor he'd chosen for his henchman.
Pretty Boy Du Qing.
This was the inevitable choice.
Since the two of them belonged to the same guild, whether Li Teng chose or not, Film and Television City would bind them together, forcing them into the same camp during confrontational performances.
"What do you think, among the six of us, who will betray us?" Gao Fei asked the original cast members.
Everyone turned to look at Glasses Man.
"Why are you all looking at me? Do I look that much like a traitor?" Glasses Man asked, and instead of getting angry, he actually flashed Feng Dahai a flattering smile.
"I think the plot wasn't pre-written for us to act out, but rather tailor-made for each role based on who we have in our cast," the female white-collar worker chimed in.
"What's the lad's name?" Brother Hai asked Glasses Man.
"Brother Hai, my surname is Huang, my name is Huang Xun," Glasses Man Huang Xun replied eagerly, leaning forward to answer Feng Dahai.
"Hmm, perform well, and once you pass the assessment, we'll be family," Brother Hai patted Huang Xun on the shoulder.
"Definitely, definitely! From now on, I'm following Brother Hai!" Huang Xun nodded his head furiously.
The traitor team obviously had the upper hand in this scene! Huang Xun naturally wanted to snatch up the role of the traitor right away.
Otherwise, why suffer with those newspaper editors?
"Damn! Has the performance already started?" Gao Fei couldn't help but be impressed by Huang Xun's quick 'betrayal' in public.
"Next, we need to confirm the actors for the six newspaper editor roles."
"In this scene, there are six people as newspaper editors, one of whom is a traitor, and one a lurking underground worker."
"The role names of the six newspaper editors, which are also their pen names as editors, are Anna, Elsa, Mickey, Gao Fei, Donna, and Daisy."
"Please, each of you six, choose a role that suits you."
After the role of Traitor Leader was decided, the director made a few more announcements.
"Your name has become one of the role names," Li Teng glanced at Gao Fei.
"Cough..." Gao Fei wasn't sure what to say.
"This is a plot set in the wartime resistance, for crying out loud. Were editors' pen names so fashion back then?" the female white-collar said, dumbfounded at the six role names.
"They're all sentenced to the post, and you're talking about reasonableness with them?" Gao Fei shook his head.
Since only the role names were being determined and it wasn't clear who the traitor or underground worker was, all this was conducted openly.
No one else competed, so Gao Fei directly chose the role name Gao Fei.
Li Teng didn't think much and chose Donna... He had previously joked with Gao Fei, calling himself Donna.
It felt as though every move they made, every word they spoke in Film and Television City, was under surveillance; otherwise, it was too much of a coincidence for the role names to be so exact.
The female white-collar chose Elsa, Sunglasses Woman picked Anna, and the young girl went for Daisy.
Glasses Man was too busy talking to Brother Hai to choose, so the last unchosen role, Mickey, fell onto him.
"Donna, little brother, I've become your little girlfriend, yay," the young girl Daisy joked with Li Teng.
In a certain cartoon, Daisy indeed was Donald's girlfriend.
"I'll take good care of you," Li Teng smiled.
"Be careful someone gets jealous," Glasses Man glanced at Sunglasses Woman as if he knew about Li Teng's affair with her.
"Why is his role name Donna and not Donald?" the white-collar Elsa asked, puzzled by Li Teng's role name.
"You think he's got virtue?" Glasses Man Mickey responded to the white-collar Elsa.
"You have the nerve to judge someone else? I think you're insulting the character of Mickey," Gao Fei heard Glasses Man mocking Li Teng and immediately launched a counterattack.
"I'm not talking to a troll like you."
"You think I want to deal with a nitpicker like you?"
The two started a war of words.
