Trembling At A High Altitude

Chapter 239: Scorched Earth Defense (3rd Update for Monthly Pass)

"How are we supposed to play this?" Liu Hui crouched in a tree and stared in astonishment after observing with a telescope from atop another large tree outside the opponent's range.

Even if Li Teng's marksmanship is accurate and he can shoot well, the prerequisite is that you have to be able to approach the military camp, right?

Although there are mountains and forests around the camp, within one to two hundred meters of the camp's perimeter, not to mention trees, even the grass had been chopped down, and any slightly elevated rocks on the ground had been leveled.

The NPC soldiers on the military camp walls were all armed with long-range automatic rifles.

In such a situation, she couldn't for the life of her think of a way to break through.

"I'm going to sleep and get some rest to be ready for tomorrow morning. If you want to sleep, you can do so anytime. I doubt anyone will come here at night, and even if they do, they may not notice us up in the trees." Li Teng didn't seem to be in much of a hurry, and after he told Liu Hui, he lay down and fell asleep on the simple bed he had built in the tree.

The tree they were resting in was evergreen.

The leaves were fine but dense, and the canopy was large enough to conceal the bed within it. Even during the day, it couldn't be seen from below, let alone at night.

Li Teng had indeed been exhausted these days, traveling by day and rock climbing at night, and still his stamina hadn't run out, which made Liu Hui respect him greatly.

Perhaps due to the 'scorched earth' strategy implemented by number 5, aside from wandering zombies, there were no other living people around the camp or in the outer areas of the Black Dragon Association.

At nightfall, Li Teng went to sleep at seven o'clock.

Soon after, Liu Hui, bored and with nothing else to do, also lay down on top of him and fell asleep.

Around three o'clock in the early morning of the next day, Li Teng woke up, full of energy.

Liu Hui was woken up by Li Teng and had also slept well.

"It's time to put an end to this Scripted World." Li Teng said to Liu Hui.

Liu Hui picked up the telescope and looked towards the distant military camp.

The camp had already changed guards, and the searchlights still brightly illuminated the area around the camp.

The guards who had just changed were also full of energy and did not relax their vigilance just because it was the early hours of the morning.

"How are you going to end it?" Liu Hui really couldn't figure out how Li Teng would find a way to take on the entire military camp by himself.

Unless... he used cheats?

Unfortunately, cheats had been severely cracked down on and were strictly prohibited.

"You follow my tactics..." Li Teng explained his tactics to Liu Hui.

Liu Hui understood what Li Teng wanted her to do, but she didn't quite grasp why he would do such a thing. Since Li Teng said so, she would just do it, and as for the result, that was for Li Teng to worry about.

Using the cover of darkness, the two of them continued to approach the military camp and finally reached the forest 200 meters outside the camp.

In the makeshift houses at the edge of the forest, dozens of NPC lumberjacks were sleeping. Li Teng did not wake them. Instead, he and Liu Hui climbed to the top of a large tree nearby.

This forest originally connected to the area where the camp was located. The trees on the perimeter had been cut down over the past few days, mainly because there were too many trees that were too thick and tall to cut down easily, so the lumberjacks had only gotten this far. But it left a 200-meter impassable open space between the camp and the forest.

After explaining the tactics to Liu Hui once again, Li Teng climbed down the tree and vanished into the night.

Clearly, Li Teng wasn't heading towards the military camp but left in another direction.

As for what he was going to do, Liu Hui still had no clear idea.

She just needed to remember what he had told her to do.

...

After Li Teng left, the sound of signal flare explosions would come from the distance at intervals, but she didn't know what he was doing.

The military camp seemed to have increased its guard because of this, and the number of NPC soldiers in the wooden wall's parapet had also gone up.

This situation lasted for more than an hour, and Liu Hui's mind began to drift. Just then, the ground nearby started to shake, growing more violent by the moment. The thunderous noise reminded Liu Hui of something that had happened before.

Could it be?

Liu Hui took out her binoculars and looked into the distance.

The moonlight was not very bright, and it was still too dark in the distance to see anything clearly.

After a while, the vibrations in the ground intensified even more.

Through her binoculars, Liu Hui finally made out some details.

It was Li Teng running.

Sprinting.

Behind him followed a horde of zombies numbering in the hundreds, perhaps even over a thousand, with at least a dozen huge Mutant Zombies in relentless pursuit!

In the Scripted World, usually, the size of a zombie horde ranged from a few dozen to just over a hundred. Gathering such a large group of zombies would require running past five or six, or even more groups of zombies.

Had he been running like this for over an hour?

Could he actually be so fast that even Mutant Zombies couldn't catch up to him?

In a little while, Li Teng rushed into the forest where Liu Hui was. He climbed up the tree trunk into the branches and lay there, panting heavily more than ten meters up, clearly at his limit.

The ground's tremors and the thunderous noise woke up the dozens of lumberjacks at the edge of the forest. As they came out of their makeshift dormitories and saw the ground teeming with zombies, they were stunned.

They instinctively wanted to run towards the military camp, but it was already too late. They hadn't run far before they were surrounded by the zombie horde, and then a Mutant Zombie sprinted toward them, tearing them in half and shoving them into its mouth.

"What a pity. If these lumberjacks had made it to the vicinity of the military camp, they could have led the zombies right there," Liu Hui lamented, but she didn't have time for regrets. She remembered what Li Teng had told her to do at that moment.

The vibrations and the roaring also awoke No. 5 and his companions who were resting in the military camp.

With the aid of the searchlight's bright light and military binoculars, No. 5 saw the surging horde of zombies gathered at the edge of the forest 200 meters away.

"Immediately pass the order down! No one is to fire their guns! Don't make any loud noises!" No. 5's face changed dramatically at the sight and hurriedly had his orders relayed.

If these Mutant Zombies leading the tide of zombies were to crash into their camp, the consequences would be unthinkable!

Just as No. 5's order was delivered, Liu Hui fired her signal gun.

A signal flare shot toward the direction of the military camp. When it was about 80 meters from the camp, it burst in midair with a loud 'bang!'

The Mutant Zombies that had been lingering in the forest, desperately trying to topple the tree to shake Li Teng and Liu Hui down, along with their surrounding horde, immediately started running towards the source of the explosion upon hearing it.

"Damn it! Who did this?" No. 5 cursed as he saw what happened. He once again restrained his soldiers, ordering no one to fire and no one to make any sound.

When the horde led by the Mutant Zombies reached the clearing 80 meters away from the camp, they lost their direction and started wandering around in place.

Just as No. 5 was beginning to breathe a sigh of relief, another signal flare was launched.

This time, the explosion occurred merely 50 meters from the camp.
