Chapter 7: Hundred Tales
Nine Lives Cat?
Su Ziyu raised his head and looked at the Nine Lives Cat Demon that leaped nearly thirty meters and landed directly on the wall in front. The opponent had acted suddenly, and he hadn't even noticed the Soul Summoning Token being snatched away. Each demon has its own specialty; for instance, the Blue Lantern specializes in Soul Binding, the Three-tailed Fox is skilled in Charm, while the Nine Lives Cat before him has an extraordinary agility.
"Meow!"
"Have you now become a Soul Guide of the Netherworld?" The Nine Lives Cat squatted on the wall like a real cat, touched its whiskers with its little paw, and tossed the Soul Summoning Token in its hand, saying, "Meow! Do you want to hang out with this cat?"
"This cat is a very powerful Great Demon!"
How can a Great Demon not have followers and subordinates?
This man in front of him seems quite powerful, and having him as a follower would certainly be a matter of prestige.
Thinking about this, the Nine Lives Cat's gaze towards Su Ziyu became more enthusiastic.
"Hang out with you? Great Demon?" Su Ziyu's hand returned from the sword hilt. He couldn't help but laugh as he asked, "What benefits are there to hanging out with you?"
He used to raise cats too.
Su Ziyu understood feline nature very well; the other party seemed to have no malice, just a playful and mischievous nature. He remembered his own fat orange cat jumping onto his belly in the morning while he was asleep; it felt like being punched, but in fact, the cat was just bored and wanted to play.
This Nine Lives Cat is still far from being a Great Demon!
She hadn't even fully transformed her cat paws, with the tail, ears on her head, little whiskers on her face, and many other features still retaining the characteristics of a cat demon.
"Benefits?"
"Meow! What benefits do you want?" The Nine Lives Cat tilted her little head at his words, looked at him with slight hesitation, then said weakly, "As long as you agree to be my follower! Can I let you pet my head?"
That seems quite enticing.
Su Ziyu almost couldn't hold back his laughter, forced himself to shake his head, and said, "How about this then."
"I also happen to need a follower."
"Why don't we make a bet? Whoever loses becomes the other's follower?"
Upon hearing Su Ziyu's words, the Nine Lives Cat immediately became excited and shouted, "Meow! What shall we bet?"
"No!"
"Do you have some ulterior motive? This cat is very smart!"
Her expression gradually turned suspicious, as felines tend to be quite skeptical and not easily fooled.
"You decide what to bet, how about that?" Su Ziyu asked with a smile.
"Alright!" The Nine Lives Cat brightened upon hearing this. She rubbed her head and thought for a while, saying, "Meow! Then let's see who captures more ghosts! How about meeting on Vermilion Bird Dao at this time tomorrow?"
"Alright." Su Ziyu nodded with a smile.
The Nine Lives Cat appeared exceedingly confident, smugly threw the Soul Summoning Token back to Su Ziyu and shouted, "Then it's a deal, meow!"
A dark shadow vanished into the night sky.
This cat demon is indeed quite capable, with astonishing jumping ability and action speed, and extremely adept at stealth and hiding. Su Ziyu hadn't detected her presence at first.
Su Ziyu casually caught the Soul Summoning Token, weighed it in his hand, and turned to walk out of the Imperial City.
Today's harvest wasn't insignificant.
At least after meeting Yama, he triggered the main mission of the current world, although the main mission seems not to be something he can complete alone. If it were about killing demons or monsters, it might be easier for Su Ziyu, akin to fighting bosses, but the task asks for— 'Reorganize the Realm of Yin and Yang, and reshape the Path of Reincarnation.'
This is not a task just killing monsters can accomplish.
He probably needs to leverage the power of the Netherworld, which is why Su Ziyu agreed readily to become a Soul Guide.
Regardless of whether the main mission can be completed, the Source Power Value must still be brushed up somehow.
However, the world's rules seem special; many ghosts and demons don't have pollution values, meaning they, like humans, are 'legal' inhabitants of this world. Source Power Values mostly come from monsters rejected by Plane Law, and Su Ziyu has yet to encounter a system prompt for pollution sources actively.
It's getting late.
Su Ziyu thought about it and planned to return to the Mortal World for a bit of rest, having been here for two days without a proper break, it was just a timely return for a nap.
This time, he didn't take Vermilion Bird Dao.
Yet Vermilion Bird Road remains bustling, with ghost fires visible from afar, accompanied by merry sounds from various demons and monsters, unaffected by the capture of the Flying Headman, still plotting mischief with frequent discussions on how to reach the Mortal World.
"Lord Su, please halt!" A cold female voice suddenly spoke.
Su Ziyu stopped and spotted a maid wearing a ghost mask, seemingly one from Blue Lantern's side.
"This was ordered by Lord Blue Lantern to be delivered to you." The ghost maid carefully handed over a book.
Delivered to me?
Su Ziyu accepted it and glanced, surprisingly seeing three Chinese characters—Hundred Tales!
Ghost stories?
Su Ziyu flipped through it, quickly spotting names of demons like Two-mouthed Woman, Mountain Boy, Snow Woman, Kappa, Great Tengu, Inugami, Unknown Fire, and Itachi, along with sketches of their approximate forms and brief story introductions.
