Chapter 21: King of Wandering Souls of Londor
"Okay."
Sister Fried pondered seriously for a moment, then lifted her head to gaze at Su Ziyu and said.
As an unkindled ember, it had been a long time since she felt this kind of longing, a completely different energy from the remnant flame, causing slight ripples in Sister Fried's dead heart.
"Pleasure working with you." Su Ziyu smiled as he extended his hand.
Sister Fried tilted her head slightly and then extended her pale hand to shake Su Ziyu's gently.
This gesture was quite unfamiliar to her.
The campfire quietly burned.
Both of them fell silent; the undead do not require sleep, as they possess endless energy and only need to sit by the campfire for a while to recover. Sleeping is more of a habit from when they were alive, and Sister Fried clearly didn't have this habit, as her way of resting was staring at the campfire blankly.
Su Ziyu, on the other hand, felt a bit sleepy, partly due to drinking a bit too much today and partly because of the fatigue from his injuries.
— "Spiritual Protection Field."
After quietly casting a layer of the Spiritual Protection Field on himself, Su Ziyu slowly closed his eyes and entered a state of light sleep.
Fortunately, his Physical Enhancement was strong enough, so not sleeping for a short period wasn't an issue.
Time passed second by second like this.
After nightfall, the world became much quieter; even the lively corpses stayed still in their original corners. Sometimes, they pretended to be corpses, not moving for ten days or half a month, but if a living person neared, they would launch a sudden attack.
Plop.
No one knew how long had passed, when suddenly there was a slight sound of a landing outside the tower, followed by soft footsteps.
Someone was coming.
Su Ziyu instantly opened his eyes.
At this moment, Sister Fried also stood up. Her expression was slightly nuanced, as if she knew who it was outside, and gestured to Su Ziyu not to act rashly.
"Sister."
In the darkness, a cloaked figure gradually appeared, much like an assassin hidden in the shadows, standing outside the campfire's light, silently observing Sister Fried, and said slowly: "Are you really going to renounce our great cause?"
"The souls of Londor are all awaiting their king's return!"
Sister?
A person from Londor? Could she be Sister Fried's sister?
"Julia..." Sister Fried's expression showed a slight hint of apology as she shook her head and said, "I have long grown tired of all this."
"Besides, what difference does it make if we succeed?"
"The age without fire will inevitably come."
The woman named Julia took a step forward; the campfire's light couldn't illuminate her face, but Su Ziyu squinted slightly, sensing an invisible weapon emanating a trace of dark and powerful energy, invisible to the naked eye yet perceptible through a strong spirituality.
"So, you are now siding with the Ashen Lords?" Julia's gaze turned to Su Ziyu by the campfire.
She looked Su Ziyu up and down, bowed slightly, with a posture of elegance much like that of a noble and said, "A pleasure to meet you."
"Nameless King!..."
Su Ziyu then stood up, gently nodding and saying, "Are you an unkindled ember as well?"
"Here to take my head?"
Julia, not far away, slowly shook her head, softly saying, "I came looking for the King of Wandering Souls of Londor."
"But the king has already renounced her throne."
Upon hearing this, Sister Fried obviously hesitated for a moment, but soon her expression gradually firmed up, and she said sternly, "Julia."
"Let it go."
"Even if you seize the Power of the Initial Flame, you can't stop the coming of the dark age."
Julia, not far away, softly said, "I know."
"But only when the Initial Flame is in our hands does the world have a future!"
Sister Fried fell silent for a moment, then suddenly retorted, "Future? A future solely with wandering souls? No birth of new life! Only a group of undead who could go mad at any time!"
"Do you think such a future is one that counts?"
Outside the campfire, Julia seemed stumped by Sister Fried's question, but she still replied firmly, "At least we have already controlled the Dark Ring and have a way to restore the reasoning of the wandering souls."
"So what?" Sister Fried shook her head and sighed, "They are still just a group of undead."
"Likely to go mad again anytime."
"Since you left, how many sane people have you met with whom you could have a normal conversation? This world is beyond salvation!..."
Julia fell silent.
After a while, she shook her head and sighed softly, "Sister, it seems you truly intend to give up."
After speaking.
The woman named Julia turned and left, her faint and indistinct voice drifting from afar: "Since you've given up the throne."
"We will then seek another King of Wandering Souls!..."
"What we are doing is right!..."
Her figure quickly disappeared into the darkness.
And Sister Fried also sat back in front of the campfire, staring blankly at the flames in front of her.
Su Ziyu remained silent; the amount of information in their conversation was substantial. He could understand some things, yet had many doubts.
"Is Londor trying to seize the Power of the Initial Flame?" Su Ziyu suddenly asked.
"Yes." Sister Fried nodded gently in front of the campfire, saying slowly, "Londor has a Secret Technique that can utilize the power of the Dark Ring to seal the Initial Flame within a person's body."
"But the price is significant."
"The decline of the Initial Flame has become irreversible, even if they succeed, it would only allow the wandering souls to enjoy the flame for a while."
Understood.
Su Ziyu quickly sorted out many things.
This world has supporters of the Fire Transmission Faction and the Fire Extinguishing Faction, whereas Londor is a unique power aiming to grasp the Power of the Initial Flame. Essentially, this world is still ruled by the Divine Race and their descendants, and Londor's actions resemble overthrowing a dynasty, first seizing the Initial Flame, then contemplating how to deal with the post-flame situation.
At worst, they could still exclusively enjoy the Power of the Initial Flame, making the Land of Wandering Souls the world's dominant force.
But this does not fundamentally solve the issues.
The extinguishing of the Initial Flame is inevitable, and even changing owners doesn't mean much; it merely changes the ruler who continues to linger in survival. Londor might have other ways to restore the wandering souls' sanity, but ultimately, this world would only be left with a pile of lively corpses, greeting the extinction of the Initial Flame amid decay.
This is not what Sister Fried desires.
