Chapter 66: To Face the Judges
"Who the hell do you think you sent that order? Who are you commanding?!"
"Ugh.." Koul groaned in pain.
His face ached too much to even pay mind to his brother's ranting.
After a moment, Koul straightened up.
"Brother, whether or not you like it, an order is an order. And I'm a king, so you can't disobey."
His words earned him another punch from his brother that sent him crashing backward.
The two knights and the treasurer that were still there, darted out of the way to prevent Koul from crashing into them.
They stood in a corner and simply watched the brothers' quarrel.
Oh fuck! It hurts.
Koul reeled on the floor. His hand hovered shakily over his face. This punch had not only sent him crashing but bursted his features.
Blood was trailing down.
"Why can't you use your mouth? Must you use your fist?"
At this, the brother shot toward Koul again, and intended to land another punch.
Oh fuck me.
Koul turned his face away and shot his hands forward to cover himself.
Seeing him cower away, his brother stopped. Instead, he picked him up by the collar.
"Why? Are you tired of the throne now? Then why not give it to our older brother, or our sister. They're both clearly interested in it. Why disturb my peace?"
Koul grumpily turned his face away and clicked his tongue.
"Who says I'm tired of the throne? I just want to go back into seclusion and need someone to handle things in my absence."
The brother stared baffled at him. The angry veins on his face pulsed to Koul's words as they came to him as nonsense.
"Why? What curse has come upon you now?"
Koul simply looked away with a blank face that said, 'do what you may, my decision is final.'
"In your dreams!" His bother pushed him away and turned to leave.
"You sure?" Koul asked after him and at this, the knights drew their swords.
Iske halted, clearly displeased.
"You think these two can do anything against me?" He asked, referring to the knights.
"The two of them alone, no. But the whole knights? I'd say yes. You must want to make the dungeon your new home, brother."
Iske kept silent. Anger was searing through him. His fist clenched as tight as they could but he uttered nothing more.
"Fine!"
A smug spread on Koul's face.
"As I thought."
"But on one condition."
Koul's smug wiped clear.
"A duel."
Why do they always ask for that?
"If you're able to land a hit on me, then I'll comply. But if not, then you'll let me go."
Koul stared blankly with disbelief.
"One single hit?"
"One single hit."
Why do they always underestimate me so much?
An hour later into the duel…
Yep! They have every reason to underestimate me.
It had been an hour long into the duel, yet Koul was still not able to land a single hit on Iske.
He thought it'd be easy if it was a single hit since he's been training, but surprisingly, his brother was like a ghost itself.
One moment he was there, and the other, he was behind Koul.
It was tiring.
"Brother, huff, just… stay put!"
Koul huffed, soaked in sweat already.
By the door to the sparring room, two knights stood watch.
"Is that a command?"
"Tsk!"
The duel went on for almost another hour before Koul came to a success. It was only possible because he distracted Iske with a trick.
"Now you have to run the kingdom!"
Koul plopped down on the bare floor to catch his breath.
"Tch! Annoying!"
Iske walked away, irritated.
Koul remained on the bare floor, panting. The cold seeped into him from beneath but he didn't mind. He just wanted to catch his breath.

In the late noon after the duel, Koul had some light meal, took his bath and went to his office.
Since he'd been coming over to occupy it, the assistant had no option than to give him room. Not that Koul was in any way helping with the paper works.
Koul sat with his back resting on his office chair. His head was tilted up as he gazed dreamily.
"Soon, soon enough I will be at the academy."
His smile stretched wide. From his expression, it could clearly be told that he was excited for his new adventure that would start soon.
But this happy smile of his was wiped clear the moment a figure snapped into his room.
"The academy?" Hera echoed in shock. "You're leaving for the academy?"
Oh-oh!
Koul averted his eyes, sweating from nervousness.
It was supposed to be discreet.
He tried to say he was just thinking it and didn't mean much by it, but Hera's stern face made it clear she wasn't going to buy any of his lies.
"Ok fine, yeah," he admitted.
More than the discovery Hera just found, Koul's gaze was fixated on something else.
Her clothings.
Unlike before when they were always clad in cheap attires, with little to no jewels, this time was different.
Hera was draped in fine, luxurious garment befitting of a queen. Her hair was styled beautifully with high end accessories.
Koul bubbled with happiness inwardly. He was glad to see his orders were being taken into accounts.
"But Hera, what are you doing here?"
Hera broke out of her shock from this question. She smiled awkwardly, pacing here and there.
"I just… you… I mean, you changed our quarters and started giving us enough allowance, so I wanted to come thank you."
"Ah, I see."
After that, silence. The silence stretched quite long and heavy.
The atmosphere was tense but amid this, Koul remembered something he'd been thinking about.
Since he was planning on leaving for the academy soon, he'd been thinking of someone who could help oversee the needs of his wives apart from the treasurer.
A woman, who would work beside the treasurer to make sure his wives were every bit comfortable.
Seeing Hera, the idea to let her be the one sparked in his head.
After all, Hera was always enthusiastic. She's able to talk whether in pressure or not. She didn't seem a pushover.
He had intended for it to be Yui, but he thought Yui was too soft. She wasn't one with the courage to stand up for herself, so necessarily, she couldn't handle things like this.
She'll easily be oppressed by the other wives if she was put in such position.
"That reminds me Hera. Since you already found out I'm leaving for the academy, I want you to work beside the treasurer to oversee all the money that goes into all the ladies in the palace. Like an assistant treasurer but mainly for yourself and co-wives. Will you be able to handle that?"
Again, Hera broke out from seemingly deep thoughts. She appeared slightly distraught.
"Uh? Uh...no.. I, if you're going to the academy then I also…"
She trailed off.
"What was that?"
Koul couldn't quite grasp what she was saying because she kept stuttering.
"Nothing. Anyways, I can't be of help!"
She turned and started hurrying out.
Koul was confused by her actions, but there was one point he made sure to convey.
"It's a secret. Make sure to keep it a secret!"
He sighed to let off the stressful steam that had gathered in his nerves.
What's with her?
He wondered about her for a few moments, before he went back to whatever he was doing.
He rested his cheek against one hand, and exhaled lazily.
"Now, what should I do to earn a penalty that will take me to the judges?"
