Chapter 64: I Can Defeat the System
"A c-commoner?" Kanstiv stammered.
"Yes. Who would be foolish enough to go there as I am? Plus, I'm sure it'd be easy to disguise myself. From the little I've come to know, people outside my kingdom don't really know me. They only know the rumors about me. Isn't that so?"
"Well, they know you're fair with fine black hair that shimmers and cascades down your back. And they surely know your eyes are purple."
"….."
"I will cut it."
"Huh?"
"The hair, I will cut it."
"What about the eyes?"
"…."
"Am I the only one with amethyst eyes?"
"…. Surely not."
"And while you know I'm at the academy, everyone else will think I've gone back into seclusion. At least, that is the lie I hope to feed them."
A loud sigh escaped Kanstiv.
"You've really thought this through."
"I have."
Plus, I have a feeling that being in the midst of supernatural scenarios will get me closer to deciphering ways to deal with the judges.
And hopefully, a way to return back to my world to clap those bastards.
"Just for clarity… but you're aware some of your wives are there, right?"
"I'm well aware."
Kanstiv stared bizarrely at Koul like he could see through him. Almost like he was thinking Koul's decision to go there was for his wives.
"I'm not going there for them!" Koul exclaimed, feeling wrongly accused.
Talking about his wives, Koul was reminded of the time he was saved from Armin and the system told him his wives beat Armin to a pulp.
They beat him to a pulp whereas he couldn't even land a proper hit on Armin if it wasn't for tricks.
Yep! All the more reason to go to the academy
If possible, I don't even want to associate with my wives that are there...
I surely don't want to…..
His face turned blank with disapproval for his thoughts. He knew there was no way he could stay without wanting to fuck them.
But that doesn't mean they're the reason I'm going.
He sighed, and turned his attention back to Kanstiv.
"I have a job for you. But before that, summon the treasurer."
Kanstiv bowed and left the office.
A while later, he returned with an elderly man. The man's hair was grey, and a round old glass framed his mildly wrinkled face.
"Greetings, your highness," he bowed.
"Without hesitation, Koul went straight to the point.
"You oversee the finances in this palace. That includes my wives', yes?"
The man's gaze momentarily flicked toward Kanstiv, then back.
Koul had never summoned him like this for any questioning. It was surprising and had him skeptical, thinking he might've done wrong somewhere.
"Yes, your highness."
"Is the palace lacking in resources?"
"Yes?"
"The palace, are we lacking money?"
"No… no, your highness."
"Then why do my wives dress in such cheap clothes? Why do they barely wear good jewelry?"
The man's gaze darted back to Kanstiv's, unable to answer.
After all, the reason not much money was going to his wives was because of Koul himself.
When he took them in as his wives, he didn't really care for them. He didn't establish any respect or a common ground for them.
Necessarily, they weren't seen fit to enjoy the palace resources. It's been like that and Koul had never seen a problem with it.
Until now, that is.
Seeing their faces, Koul immediately grasped the situation.
He sighed.
"From today, see to it that they're treated the best they can. Do not hold back on the supposed resources that are to go to them. They're the ladies of this palace."
Kanstiv and the man were silent. They couldn't help but be surprised at this side of their king. It was new and worth gawking at.
"Do you understand me? I'm establishing the respect and honor they should've had since the beginning."
The man bowed.
"Yes, your highness."
"Also see to it that those who need new chambers are given the best there are. If the quarters they live in are poor, change it."
"Yes, your highness."
I'll even go see for myself.
Koul dismissed the treasurer and asked Kanstiv to sit back down to continue their discussion.
"Who amongst my siblings will be fit to oversee the kingdom in my absence?"
Definitely not the one I've met.
Kanstiv put his hand to his chin, having a deep thought about it.
What's with that serious thinking face? I only have three siblings, don't I?
After a moment, he replied.
"That would be sir Iske. Your second brother."
"Who? The one who wanted to represent me?"
"No, that was sir Evrick, the oldest. Sir Iske is the third child."
Oh, so the one before me.
I wonder what he's like.
"And why do you think he's the best for this? Is he not as greedy as the rest who eye my throne?"
"I don't think he really cares."
"…."
"Yeah, he doesn't care."
"So how do you expect him to take over if he doesn't care for things like this?"
"By your authority, what else? If it's an order, even he can't refuse, can he?"
I see, a grin blossomed across Koul's lips.
I underestimate myself too much.
"I'll do just that," he said.
"Now, the work I have for you," he continued.
"I want to enroll in the academy as soon as I can. For that, I need you to go to the capital, and find me a noble family willing to adopt me."
"…."
"…."
They stared silently at each other, unblinking and unmoving.
After a while, Kanstiv replied.
"Who would?"
"Idiot! As a mere commoner! A 19-year-old commoner! Not as a king!" Koul lashed out.
"Ah, I see."
"….."
"Which means we need to forge a fake identity and background for you. An orphan, possibly. Also, a new name."
"Yes, yes. Handle that."
"I will station two capable knights to guard you before I leave. Please be careful and mindful. Don't die before I get back."
"Yes, yes." Koul waved him off.
After he left, Koul exhaled aloud and slumped forward to rest his head on the table.
This is so stressful.
"Now, for the system."
I thought I would get a penalty for deciding to give my wives a better life here in the palace. But surprisingly, I didn't.
Not even for resurrecting Remi, sigh.
…..
I wanted to though.
Anyways, I think I know how to get around the system and judges now.
Koul summoned the system and when it appeared, he lifted his gaze to look at it.
"System, can you tell me how my father died?
[I thought you already knew? That his death is still a mystery. He was found dead just like that. We don't know if it was due to old age or he was assassinated. No one knows.]
Hmm? Shouldn't you of all people know even if the world doesn't know?
Still, Koul continued.
"What about Remi? How did she die earlier?"
[Isn't that clear? She was assassinated, of course.]
Slowly, a grin started stretching across Koul's lips. But before it got big, he rested his head back on the table to hide his face.
I had thought the topic about 'death' was simply forbidden to talk about. When I had asked the system how the real Koul died, it got so enraged and felt insulted that a mere mortal like me wished to know something I shouldn't.
So I necessarily thought it was forbidden to ask about deaths.
But it isn't so.
It's not that the system feels insulted to tell me how Koul died.
It's just that the system, better yet, the judges themselves do not know how the real Koul died. They do not know the cause of his death, nor do they even know his soul is still roaming.
The system…. isn't all knowing.
I can defeat it!
