Chapter 77: Dr. A's Astonishing Discovery
Inside the rental, Zhou Baiyu turned to the first page of Dr. A's notes.
The content on the first few pages astonished him:
"The selection of the pioneers seems random, but I must say that this leads to a great disparity in the quality of the pioneers."
"And what I've been researching is, what exactly is special about them. What exactly is their 'characteristic'?"
"Can a characteristic be transferred? Pioneers need to switch bodies when they go to the Advanced World, and currently, there is no data indicating that these bodies are non-random."
"Some people are foolish yet receive great initial identities, while others are smart with great talents in reality, but once they get to the Advanced World, they face various innate deficiencies. I call this 'account allocation'."
"So far, this allocation appears to have no pattern at all, purely a matter of luck."
"Of course, this has nothing to do with my research. What I want to know is—if I use my soul to enter another person's body, and our souls exchange, then in the end, when we enter the Advanced World, will I have the account that belonged to my original body, or the account that belonged to my new body?"
"Ah, everything about the pioneers fascinates me... but first, I have to become a pioneer."
"But how can I become a pioneer? How can I unreasonably take over someone's body? The current level of science is not yet sufficient to realize memory overlay or thought transfer."
"Moreover, under the twisted rules... those so-called gods have appeared, with abilities that are even more inconceivable. I believe that at this time, I can only rely on the power of the gods—corruption."
Clearly, Dr. A's notes indicated that he already had considerable understanding of the pioneers.
This madman actually wanted to take over the body of a pioneer. Become a pioneer by using the power of corruption?
This sounded absurd.
Zhou Baiyu thought that Dr. A was a madman with wild ideas.
But in many subsequent notes, Dr. A really did realize his crazy idea.
He somehow mastered the ability to corrupt.
And this ability, just by chance, coincided with his research direction—soul transfer.
Using terms from fantasy, it's called Possession.
He seemed to be able to take over other people's bodies.
But the process was more complicated and nowhere as convenient as sewing bodies together directly.
Dr. A's ability to corrupt was weaker than sewing in many aspects, at least in terms of combat. But it also had more depth in some aspects than the ability to sew.
The pioneer who ended up in Dr. A's hands had become nothing more than an experimental tool.
Dr. A was completely unafraid of trouble for the sake of his research.
Through various experiments that Zhou Baiyu found extremely exaggerated and unimaginable, Dr. A really did step by step—transmute into the pioneer he had captured.
His astonishing guess turned out to be correct. But then, Dr. A discovered a shocking secret.
Page twenty-nine of Dr. A's notes.
"So that's how it is, I finally managed to do it! Now I have taken over this pioneer's body, and I certainly didn't expect that the priority given to the physical body would be higher than the 'soul'."
"I found two surprising things, first—that I became a pioneer, but the characteristic of the pioneer was gone."
"Previously, using a truth serum, he confessed that his characteristic was 'Elemental Affinity', and he was naturally suited to be a spirit caller. But when I took over this body, 'Elemental Affinity' was not among my characteristics. However, my corrupted feature—the Soul Traveler—still exists!"
"So I hypothesize that the 'soul' determines the characteristics, while the physical body determines eligibility to become a pioneer."
"But there is still a lot of data to perfect, and my research has just begun. Which brings me to the second surprising thing—I returned to the so-called 'original version of the world', and found many inconsistencies."
"The original world is what the pioneers refer to as the 1.0 version. I once used a truth serum to have the pioneer describe the 1.0 version, in an attempt to learn from his mouth how many years the 1.0 version is separated from my 1.35 version."
"Interestingly, the world he described seems not far off from my world in terms of years."
"What the physicists of the 1.0 version can do is not much different from the peak of human science in my memory."
"So based on my memory... the gap in years between 1.0 and 1.35 should be within ten years."
"But I found... the names of cities, places, some organizational names he spoke of, all correspond to what I know... yet there are numerous differences."
"For example, the World Trade Building in Songjiang City is in both our memories, but in my memory, it's 292 meters tall. In his memory, the World Trade Building is only 175 meters."
"This is abnormal because even if the building was renovated later, the changes wouldn't be so substantial. And in my memory, the World Trade Building has been 292 meters since the beginning."
"I've been thinking about what happened between version 1.0 and 1.35... it's as if a hidden version has caused the world we're both familiar with to undergo drastic changes, with so many similarities and yet so many differences."
"I've always been puzzled by this, always feeling that some version hid the drastic changes..."
"Fortunately, I became a pioneer, and I've found the truth!"
"I've completely taken over the pioneer's body, gaining the qualification of a pioneer, so I can also return to the transit station."
"The intermediary was a fourth-order spirit caller, with the Primordial Spirit Divine Revelation, who could actually sense many differences between me and the pioneer from days past. He was amazed to discover that the pioneer's soul had been replaced."
"The intermediary warned me that I had broken the gods' rules, and I would soon be transferred to the most adverse version."
"But before that, I will first return to the original version of the world."
"Oh... the approach of death, truly an oppressive matter, but after I return to the original world, I soon no longer cared, as the original world is far too interesting!"
Page thirty-five.
Zhou Baiyu saw a conclusion that surprised him, which he had considered a possibility when he personally went to "Hanging Corpse Hospital"—the Fifth People's Hospital.
Now that it has been spoken by Dr. A, he believed that it was indeed the case—
"I've always been wondering why the 1.0 version and the 1.35 version have so many inconsistencies in their content."
"But as the pioneers are always limited by regional boundaries each time they go and cannot see the full picture, and they have significant survival pressure, preventing them from observing the details, no one has noticed it all this time."
"Today, I finally completely understand that... this is actually—"
"Two different worlds!!"
