Chapter 76: Critical Hit Affixes
Transfer station.
Lin, smoking a cigarette, was far less busy than other middlemen.
There were only nine middlemen, but the transfer station housed 120,000 predecessors.
Of course, this figure only accounted for those within the nation of Longxia.
In other countries, it was said that there were new divine successions.
Before twilight of the gods, new gods weren't allowed to pass on their lineage; gods of art and creation, gods of science and innovation, gods of gender and diversity... these new gods couldn't extend their legacy.
However, after the twilight of the gods, everything had changed.
The nine major professions were limited to within Longxia; in other countries, there were seemingly additional professions, other middlemen, and… other gods.
But due to agreements among the gods, it seemed there were insurmountable boundaries between the advanced worlds of different nations.
Back to the middlemen.
Even though there were nine middlemen for 120,000 predecessors, it didn't mean each transfer station averaged tens of thousands of people.
In fact, everyone's transfer station was unique to them.
For the middlemen, it was as though their consciousness was fragmented into countless pieces, each part servicing a predecessor individually.
Just like Mo Sangyu, who might be duping a naive snow demon while simultaneously discussing version information with the Prophet, the voyeur.
These fragmented consciousnesses eventually reassembled.
Every middleman was busy.
Lin was the most relaxed one because the Mutators... died too often.
Although new people always filled the ranks, not every newcomer was a Mutator.
The weaker the profession, the fewer players it attracted, a vicious cycle.
For Lin, this wasn't good news, for it meant she could extract less value from the predecessors.
Once a person resigned themselves to their fate, they became desireless and without needs, finding comfort even in their altered state of mind once they accepted their situation.
Of course, there had to be some fun, like with Zhou Baiyu.
Seeing Zhou Baiyu return, Lin happily lifted his chin with her finger:
"Little brother, not bad at all, you're back so quickly. Got a good harvest, eh?"
Zhou Baiyu said:
"Do you remember our agreement, Lin? You said if I came back alive, you'd tell me about your business."
"So concerned about me? Or is it that you want to know why middlemen exist, you've started to ponder the real purpose of the advanced world and the gods' game?"
Lin saw right through Zhou Baiyu's thoughts.
After the cruise, Zhou Baiyu indeed was keen to know the real significance of the existence of "predecessors."
What exactly were these middlemen doing in the transfer stations?
Who arranged all this, and what kind of existence were they?
It seemed that only Lin could reveal these answers.
"Yes, I want to know all of this. I at least need to know, my boss—this beautiful, mature woman—what's your background, were you human before?"
"Yes. I come from... well, in your terms, I come from the Capital City."
Lin kept her word but didn't wholly abide by the agreement.
The next question Zhou Baiyu asked, she evaded.
"The twilight of the gods, what exactly is that event?"
"Can't say, if you earn ten thousand advanced points, I might consider telling you a part of it."
"Oh, I thought there was an emotional connection between us, turns out it's all business," Zhou Baiyu teased.
Lin laughed:
"Business is business, but there are feelings too. Too bad, little brother, you're just too young for me."
Zhou Baiyu did not respond:
"Is there anything else you can tell me?"
"No, we'll talk next time. A woman needs to keep a sense of mystery."
"The level completion evaluation told me to contact my intermediary for other rewards. What rewards are there?"
Zhou Baiyu brought the conversation back to the main topic.
"Advanced points, you obtained a total of two thousand four hundred points. With these advanced points, you can choose to add some enhancement features to your Mutator's initial capabilities or basic mutations."
"What do you mean?"
"Simply put, either enhance your positive mutation probability, or further enhance the reduced deviation rate of mutations, or your mutated items will have a higher initial durability."
Lin paused:
"Or, there might be some unexpected surprises. Also, completing the endless mode has unlocked a new reward for you."
At the bar, Lin placed two glasses of wine. One glass of blue wine, and one glass of purple wine.
"The first glass, the blue one, can be bought with your existing advanced points, worth two thousand points. The second glass, the purple one, is an extra gift. Drink the purple one first; I'll consider your reward for passing the endless mode cleared."
It was another bet, and Zhou Baiyu was already getting used to it, so much so that he didn't even bother to ask.
Right now, he just wanted to quickly return to the original world and review Dr. A's work.
So, he decisively paid with his advanced points, leaving him with less than five hundred points. His once-bulging purse deflated again.
Following the order, Zhou Baiyu picked up the purple wine, which was a drink gifted for completing the endless mode.
After drinking it, a phrase emerged in Zhou Baiyu's mind—
"[The success rate of the next bet increased by fifty percent.]"
Soon after, Zhou Baiyu downed the second glass of wine, marking the beginning of the next game—the game of blue wine.
The blue wine came from the fourth wine cabinet, which was the most expensive one.
After Zhou Baiyu drained it, a purple current flashed across his eyes.
Lin raised an eyebrow:
"You really are a... born gambler, to have drawn this. In the blue wine, this is considered very rare."
An explanation regarding the wine emerged in Zhou Baiyu's mind.
"[The capriciousness of the God of Difference and Chaos, a permanent professional passive skill. Hmm... good news and bad news always come together, let's start with the bad news—
The physical exhaustion from mutation will increase by fifty percent. In simple terms, your mutation frequency has decreased.
But in compensation, your mutated items might gain a second, third, or even fourth attribute.
Simply put, your mutated items may exhibit multiple functions.]"
Zhou Baiyu couldn't help but admit, this truly was a profession that took gambling to the extreme; even the passive skills were a gamble.
But it seems… the benefits outweigh the costs.
Zhou Baiyu thought carefully; it seemed that his past mutated items indeed had only single attributes.
"This ability isn't bad. But it depends on luck; it's not certain that you will mutate many attributes, but the physical exhaustion each mutation consumes is definitely going to increase," Lin elaborated, dampening his spirits. But having dealt with Guang Tongchen, Zhou Baiyu felt more like a gambler:
"For me, as long as it exists, I can bet on its continued existence."
Lin blew a smoke ring:
"Nice indeed, it's a pity that our god is long gone; otherwise, you would have definitely suited his taste."
After collecting his rewards, Zhou Baiyu prepared to imprint the drink that would return him to the real world.
Before that, he reminded Tongchen to lay low for a while…
But clearly, it was too late to say that. Tongchen had already flaunted the achievement "Endless Piercer."
Inside the voice of the forerunners, discussions about Guang Tongchen and Jiang Xianwu erupted anew.
Another topic that exploded simultaneously— the President was being forgetful.
But Zhou Baiyu really didn't have the heart to care about these things anymore.
Back in the rental, he eagerly opened up Dr. A's notebook.
