Chapter 234 - A Pause for Truths.
[Chapter Size: 2300 Words.]
Third Person POV
Skellige.
...
...
The conversation with the king was somewhat brief. While intentions were stated, in addition to visiting acquaintances, it was also declared that they wanted the castle to officiate a wedding, which the king accepted without a second thought.
"Well, now you may make yourselves at home in the castle. My servants will prepare proper rooms for you," Bran said in a cordial tone at the end while his wife began whispering in his ear.
"Oh, and let us not forget our grand feast tonight, to celebrate like old friends!" he said with a big smile.
Crouch and Mousesack smiled and everyone nodded.
"Hey, Geralt." Madara approached him. "I'm thinking of taking Ciri for a walk... we'll be out for the rest of the day, all right?" he said.
"What are you planning to do?" Geralt asked curiously, as Yennefer also stepped closer to join the conversation.
"Explore the island, walk around a bit... you know, talk in private for a while, you understand?" Madara said. "We'll be back in time for the banquet."
"All right," Geralt nodded in a neutral tone.
"Come back as soon as you can," Yennefer said.
Madara nodded, while Ciri was a little surprised by Madara's suggestion, but she didn't reject his wish.
"Excuse us... let's go," Madara said, looking at Ciri.
They left through a side staircase that led directly to the lower part of the city, which seemed like a cliffside.
"So... need help?" Ciri said with a smile, while some people looked at them a bit suspiciously, as they were separated from the rest of the group that had gone to explore the castle.
Ciri took Madara's hand and disappeared in a green flash. They reappeared in the middle of the village again.
"So... where do you want to go?" she asked, a bit excited, with the idea of getting to know the island better.
"Let's get the horses and ride around the island a bit," he said, nodding.
They returned to the port, while the ship they came with was still there, and their four horses were being cared for inside the ship for the journey.
After a brief conversation, they took Ciri and Madara's two horses. Then they moved on, leaving through the city gate. Some of the villages were a bit far, so they had a small trip ahead.
Ciri was laughing as she sped up her horse. Madara also joined in a short race, while they looked at the fields and the coast of Skellige, able to see other islands in the distance. The island had its own charm.
"This is so much fun!" Ciri exclaimed with a smile.
They only stopped at another village on the south of the main island after an hour of riding, where they put on cloaks to hide their faces.
In the middle of the village, they ignored the people who looked at them with some suspicion, while they curiously examined the board in front of them.
"So, what do we have here?" Ciri began, smiling. "Griffin... forest guardian which must be a Leshen... look, there's a description of a Fiend here... Would you like to go?" she asked, excited.
"Sure, we can go for that one," he said, as she quickly moved, grabbing the paper and wrapping it before tucking it into her belt and mounting her horse.
"Follow me," she said, pressing her legs against the horse as they followed the instructions to find the contractor.
They ended up having to slow down when they hit a rough road and ended up heading toward a small farm in the distance.
A silence had settled between them at that moment, as they simply enjoyed the landscape together, with the sea breeze never leaving their noses.
"So..." Ciri suddenly broke the silence. "I don't like Bran's wife..." she simply admitted.
"Of course not, did you see her face when she found out you were getting married..." Madara gave a relaxed smile.
"I thought..." Ciri murmured.
"That she'd be like her husband? She's ambitious and was grooming her son as a suitor for you." Madara said calmly. He wasn't foolish—Ciri was an extremely powerful political piece for the entire continent. Every king would like to get their hands on her. Too bad for them that, even without Madara's interference, she was powerful enough to protect herself from any king.
"I know... it's just that I don't like it, people see me almost all the time as a political opportunity... It's annoying." she said.
"I doubt it'll be like that once you have your married status." Madara said, and she looked at him with a sincere smile.
"You're right..." she admitted. "I love you, Madara. Don't ever doubt that, you've always been by my side, helping me and protecting me... But I also admire how you never saw me as a chess piece. That's why I'll always be grateful to you for that." she said in a sincere and almost tearful tone. That must have hurt her a lot throughout her childhood, being a little princess inside a castle controlled by her grandmother. She never had a true friend, until...
"You were never a chess piece, Ciri. That was never an option." Madara said in a serene tone.
"Yeah..." she said with a smile as a tear ran down her cheek, and she would have kissed Madara if they weren't on horses at that moment.
Arriving at the farm, they found a man with an axe, who stopped as soon as he saw them approaching, looking at them with a suspicious expression. Without putting down the axe, he walked up to the gate to greet them.
"Strangers hiding behind cloaks... I don't like that," the man said in a threatening tone.
Ciri wasn't offended, she just pulled a paper from her pocket and showed it to him.
"We want to take this job of yours. Is it true there's a Fiend here?" she asked, while the man made a face.
"A kid wants to mess with that monster? Want to waste time? And you even ripped my notice off the main town board!" the man said angrily.
Madara quickly pulled out a kunai and threw it, hitting a tree next to the man's fence. The man looked at it confused, but also surprised by the speed.
In the next moment, the seal on the kunai caught fire and the tree simply exploded, startling the man, who fell to the ground as frightened screams came from inside the house. Part of the fence was destroyed along with the tree.
"I think we're more than qualified for this job. You choose: either we do it, or we leave," Madara said, while the man still looked stunned.
"I... I guess so," the man said, still a bit dazed. "All right, I'll tell you."
He began talking about a giant monster that had been eating his cows. The creature came from the forest once a week at night, and two or three cows were taken each time.
"It must be pretty big to eat that much meat. Have you thought about keeping the cows in a barn?" Madara asked.
"We did," the man replied. "And it was the worst decision I ever made. That creature just broke down the barn. Its roars echoed through my house, I heard everything from my bedroom. I've never felt so scared. Even so, I went to see what it was. When I saw the giant creature with a single glowing eye, my bones froze. I thought I was going to die, but fortunately, it already had a few cows in its hands and was heading back to the forest."
"I swear to God, I've never seen anything so terrifying. Later I found out it might be a Fiend," he said.
"I see. We'll check it out," Madara replied.
They quickly made their way into the forest, which darkened the world around them due to the dense canopy casting heavy shadows.
It didn't take long before they found some nests in the area. It seemed like this place had been a hunting ground, as far as Madara could tell.
"We found several monsters, but none of them come near the center," Madara analyzed, managing to follow a larger trail. The monsters began to grow scarcer as they went deeper into the forest and the trees got taller, until there were none at all.
"Then it's very likely to be a large and powerful creature," Ciri said excitedly.
They then found a huge cave — not very deep — used as a chamber with a campfire in front and cows roasting on spits made from trees. There was a giant creature sitting there. Not a Fiend, but just as terrifying.
"That's a cyclops!" Ciri murmured, surprised.
"It's true... it's my first time seeing one too," Madara said, analyzing the situation. Then he looked at her. "Want to end this quickly?" he asked.
"Yes! Let's do it together. You've been letting me do all the work lately," she laughed.
"All right, let's move in," Madara said.
He pulled his sword from the storage seal. Ciri also unsheathed her sword.
The cyclops was there, waiting for his meat to heat up, when he was surprised by something flying toward him. Two shurikens struck his hand, embedding themselves quickly. The monster felt a sting of pain and looked around in confusion. In the next instant, Ciri appeared beside him and, with a precise strike, slashed his eye, making the giant growl in pain.
Madara was already on top of him, and with a swift cut, removed his head. The colossus collapsed to the ground, its body falling backward.
"Looks like it's over," Ciri laughed.
"Yeah. Let's see if he had anything interesting stashed in here," Madara said, looking toward the cave.
"How are we going to bring the whole body?" Ciri wondered.
"We can just take the head," Madara replied.
They entered the place. The smell was strong. They found a chest and, upon opening it, saw at least a thousand gold coins. Madara took the chest and left with Ciri, returning to the farmer while carrying the cyclops's head in front of him.
"We found your cows being roasted by this guy. It wasn't exactly a Fiend, but a cyclops. You can find the rest of the body if you're willing to go into that forest," Madara noted, as the man nodded, quite surprised.
"Well... I did notice he looked kind of lanky. Either way, I'll pay you. But if you think I'm not going to charge you for the fence you destroyed, you're mistaken," the man complained.
Madara shrugged. He wasn't here for the money anyway.
Ciri saw a woman playing with two children outside, while the man brought a pouch of coins.
"Here it is," he said.
"Beautiful family you have," Ciri said, with a silly smile toward the two small boys being cared for by their mother.
The man, who had been grumpy before, couldn't help but smile now, his face softening as he heard that from the girl.
"Thank you. I have no complaints. My wife and my children," he said with a smile. It was the first one he gave to Madara and Ciri.
"I'm happy for you," she said, with a gentle look. There was something wonderful in her expression when she watched the children and the mother caring for them.
"Are you two a couple?" the man asked, noticing the girl seemed a bit melancholic.
"Yes, we are. We're getting married in two days," she said, excited.
"Ah, congratulations!" the man said, pleased.
"Anyway, it was a pleasure meeting you. We have to go before nightfall. I want to take care of a few more things," Madara said, and Ciri nodded.
"All right. If you need anything, you can come here," he said at the end.
They said their goodbyes and returned to the horses, following the road toward the giant lighthouse in the south of the island, where more villages and even cities could be seen.
"There's a coastal cliff a few kilometers from here. But the horses won't make it. Let's leave them hidden here with some clones. We'll come back for them later."
"Are we going to run?" Ciri asked.
"Don't worry about that," Madara said, making hand signs and summoning a massive griffin in a burst of smoke.
Ciri smiled wide. "Totó!" she laughed, hugging the creature, which looked at her in confusion.
"Let's go for a ride," Madara said.
He climbed onto it and pulled Ciri up in front of him, while the griffin simply shot into the sky, soaring over a large portion of the island and arriving at a more isolated coastline, landing calmly atop giant rocks.
"How romantic... the sun is setting," Ciri laughed, excited, as she looked west, where the sun was disappearing.
"Actually, I wanted to talk to you about a few things," he said.
Ciri nodded. "Yes, you mentioned it in the wagon with Mousesack. I just wonder what it is. I'm really curious, but I know you're not one to talk easily... so I waited for the moment you'd open up," she laughed.
"There are things only I know and others that your grandmother and I share knowledge of... only the two of us and a handful of people who are our enemies know as well. But there's something I have to tell you about your father," Madara began, indicating he would speak about the true identity of Emperor Emhyr of Nilfgaard — Ciri's father.
He wanted to make everything he knew clear to Ciri before they became bound to one another forever — it would be the fair thing to do.
