Chapter 229 - Horse Race.
[Chapter Size: 2500 Words.]
Third Person POV
Redania.
...
...
The night had turned into chaos due to the dragons' flames released in the middle of the forest, while the soldiers from the camp immediately went to check what had happened.
In the end, they didn't find any of the dragons that were supposed to be there and came across only the area devastated by the flames, burning the vegetation.
Ciri even tried to lessen the fire with her magic, but Madara didn't think it was a good idea, preventing her from using unnecessary powers. And so they moved on, deciding not to try anything else.
On the way back to Novigrad, they stopped to sleep in a wooden house in the middle of the forest, built by Madara.
When the sun was rising, they were still a bit far from Novigrad. They were at a point halfway between where the dragons had been and the port city.
This area was filled with pastures and dozens of farms, with territories belonging to many counts and their families, while a duke ruled over the whole territory.
There was a crowd of people ahead of them as the two young ones walked toward them.
"Are you sure we can really do this?" Ciri asked cautiously, as they were already blending in with hundreds of common people, seeming to be at some sort of fair.
"Of course," Madara said calmly, while Ciri still looked at him, as if she wanted to confirm it was really real.
"What is it? Don't want to have some fun?" he asked, seeing the girl's expression.
"It's not that. It's just that... you're not usually into any of this. I'm just surprised. Of course I want to go," she murmured.
"That's not true. We went to that little town when we were heading to war. And we also took part in several events in Cintra, if I remember right," Madara said.
"Yes, that's true. But about Cintra... that was because I always dragged you along. You were kind of grumpy about those things. All you cared about was training," she murmured, smiling softly.
"That's true," Madara admitted. "But we're not in such a complicated situation yet. So we can enjoy a little, don't you think?" he said in a calm tone, as he looked at people selling things in small stalls.
"Yes... I'm just still surprised," she repeated, taking his hand and squeezing it at the end.
As they moved forward, they weren't at a local festival, but actually at a horse race, which Madara had heard would be happening as they were arriving.
He asked Ciri if she wanted to enjoy it, since they couldn't do much in the city of Novigrad.
They removed their hoods. Madara had black hair and dark eyes without showing the sharingan, and Ciri still had her hair dyed black, since the platinum color drew too much attention.
There were still images of Madara circulating throughout the continent, but always portraying a boy two or three years younger than he was now. Madara was already eighteen, a young adult, and couldn't be directly linked to the most feared power on the continent like this, when he was among commoners with his girlfriend.
Ciri also looked mature as a young woman, and the two seemed like a peasant couple, with the clothes they wore. So, it wouldn't be a problem to show themselves there as they entered the festival.
"I heard Count Burdoc won't take part in the tournament, like many other nobles. They're investigating and dealing with the dragon situation in the north..." some peasants gossiped among themselves, while talking with servants from noble families, sharing the news.
And it was true, many counts and minor nobles had been at that camp Madara had invaded, and even the count himself was taking the lead to deal with the dragons before an order from the king arrived here.
Now, with no more problems and finally able to enjoy themselves, Ciri immediately dragged Madara to the cotton candy stand, grabbing a big one to eat and paying with the coins she had received directly from Lord Abutec, since she was the one who hunted the monsters, while offering some to Madara.
But he wasn't a big fan of it and refused. She didn't mind, continuing to eat it, loving the sweet, almost skipping as she bounced around, still clinging to his hand.
There were other types of food. Madara ended up getting something to eat with Ciri, who offered so many options, insisting that he get into the rhythm of the festival, while around them they saw toys, games, and music.
"Here, your prize..." a man muttered, grabbing a huge stuffed bear and grumpily placing it on the counter.
Ciri took it, excited. After Madara, using the bow from the stall, simply hit all the targets, winning the top prize.
There were a few tricks meant to keep Madara from knocking over the objects, but he was far stronger than anything there, easily winning the grand prize.
"This is really big," Ciri murmured, not knowing whether to carry the bear or her cotton candy.
They moved to a corner, and Madara stored the bear inside a seal out of sight from others. Then, they returned to the festival, where a man was performing fire-breathing tricks while people clapped and tossed coins into a pot for his show.
The place was full of peasants, dressed the same as Madara and Ciri. Children were running back and forth.
There were also small thieves, but Madara just gave a fierce glare to a few who got too close. The look intimidated them easily, since they were only kids.
Ciri seemed to be enjoying it, joining the other villagers and clapping her hands.
Madara was lost in his thoughts, until a voice drowned out everything around him.
"I feel that you've become much more powerful."
Madara immediately turned to the side, and Ciri noticed the swift movement. She stopped clapping and looked at him.
"Something wrong?" she asked, as her eyes also shifted to the small cart beside them.
But there was no one there.
"Just... it's nothing," Madara replied curtly.
Ciri already knew he was worried about something. Madara kept staring at the cart. He swore there had been someone there just a moment ago — and it was she who had spoken those words.
"Let's keep going," Madara said, still alert to his surroundings.
They were near the grandstand made to seat the noble families at tables, while bards began singing songs in front of it, with the people applauding.
Ciri went back to celebrating, though she still noticed Madara's unease.
After a while, he no longer felt anything. He just sighed and ended up letting it go, continuing to enjoy the festival with Ciri.
The horses were getting ready for the mid-morning race at that moment.
The stands were full of nobles and their families, while the peasants stayed behind the fences, in the lower area.
As he looked toward the families, Madara noticed someone he hadn't expected to see there.
There was a man alone, looking like a merchant. He was examining the horses until he noticed the gaze directed at him.
Madara didn't bother to hide it. The man, upon seeing him, immediately widened his eyes in recognition.
"Who is it?" Ciri murmured beside Madara, not recognizing him, but noticing the strange interaction between the man and Madara.
"He is Victor Hugkill, a noble from Cintra," Madara replied calmly, while Ciri raised her eyes, remembering the name.
The noble stood up and descended the steps of the grandstand the next moment, approaching them carefully, his eyes widening as he recognized the girl even more.
"Prin—" He didn't even get to finish, as Madara raised a hand in front of him.
"Don't even think about calling her that," he said seriously.
"Forgive me. You're right," the man murmured immediately, before looking at Madara.
"I never imagined I'd find you here... I heard what you did... I was in the capital of Sodden. The King of Sodden told me personally," he said carefully before continuing.
"I don't know how you managed to do that, I don't even understand... But I'm glad you devastated those damn invaders," he said, looking at Madara with gratitude, who only raised an eyebrow.
He expected some fear from the man — even though Madara had saved him from his brother after his entire family had been killed.
Madara had personally liked that family, except for that arrogant and treacherous boy. His father had died at Madara's side in the first battle of Nilfgaard against Cintra. He had spoken his last words to Madara, asking him to tell his family that he had fought bravely.
And even though Lord Hugkill had been a great man on the battlefield, his youngest son betrayed the kingdom, thirsty for power as the second son. He handed over his territory to the Nilfgaardians himself, and ten thousand soldiers came through there, taking Cintra's troops by the eastern flank, crushing them alongside the army already attacking from the south.
Madara had personally gone to Lord Hugkill's territory, which was being taken by the Nilfgaardians, killed as many black-clad soldiers as he could and slaughtered Victor's younger brother in a horrible way, saving Victor and taking him to Sodden with a letter personally written to the king, explaining that he had helped.
"Let's go to my table. It's good to see you both again. I'm sure we have a lot to talk about," he said, and Madara saw no issue with it.
Madara and Ciri then ended up joining the former member of the ducal family of Cintra at his table in the grandstand, waiting for the race to begin.
Victor ended up sharing his story. He was much more open now than when Madara last saw him. He spoke without mentioning Madara's or Ciri's names even once, while some of the other families looked at them a bit strangely — two peasants sitting with a well-known merchant who seemed very close to them, judging by the tone of his speech and expression.
Some nobles came over to speak with Victor, but he waved them off, saying he was with "old friends."
In the end, Victor continued his story. He had gone to the capital of Sodden. He secured a place in the castle after the king sent a letter to the capital and summoned him for an audience as soon as the war ended, before the meeting of all the northern monarchs.
He could no longer be a landholding noble, since Cintra was still occupied, but he was given a chance to start over.
Since then, Victor began traveling as a merchant, starting in Sodden. He had a lot of experience with business, as his father had trained him to inherit a duke's territory.
He began to leave Sodden in the past few years, even founding a trade company between the kingdoms of Temeria and Redania, with three ships under his name that carried and brought goods.
He ended up making a name for himself here in Redania, especially in Novigrad, while also becoming a great horse-racing bettor.
Victor took part and discovered his passion in this sport, and had earned his place in Redania's upper class, sharing meetings and parties with nobles.
Victor mentioned the dragons were looking for him, saying he was very surprised to hear his name, so much so that he had a few informants up north to investigate the situation. He had even personally searched for information about Madara, to whom, from what he showed, he seemed to owe a debt.
Madara ended up sharing a bit of his story from the past few years as well, when Victor asked if it was true what he had heard — that Madara had left the continent.
They talked for a while, until the race finally began, with Victor betting more than three thousand gold coins, which was a very large amount.
The race started soon after, and he ended up winning, but it wasn't much profit with four other nobles betting on the same horse, while cries of defeat echoed and even people praised Victor.
"I have a house near here, it's a large farm. Would you like to stay there?" he offered.
Madara shook his head. "We're on our way out, but thank you for everything," he said, starting to get up to leave.
"Wait a moment," Victor murmured, looking seriously at both of them.
"First, I wanted to thank you. You saved my life. Even though I couldn't save my family, you still warned me about my brother, and back then I didn't listen. Your secret will be safe with me, and not a word will come out of my mouth about you two, I swear on my life.
Besides, if one day you feel like it, just go to my estate. You can ask for the merchant Victor Hugkill, and anyone will be able to tell you where my home is. You'll always be welcome."
Madara nodded, while Ciri also thanked him.
"One more thing," he murmured, sounding a bit emotional. "I don't know what your plans are, but if one day Cintra is reclaimed, I'd be happy to return to the kingdom."
He seemed to carry Cintra in his heart, as his home. "Don't worry. We'll take it back in the future," Ciri said, smiling.
"Ah, I'd really love to see that, princess. Either way, it's good to see you both well. I hope to see you one day as king and queen of Cintra," he said with a sincere tone, while Madara just nodded and walked away with Ciri, leaving his old acquaintance behind.
They returned to Novigrad, where the ship was already ready, waiting only for the two of them at noon.
Geralt and Yennefer weren't happy that they arrived a bit late. They had said they'd be there in the morning, not at midday.
Ciri explained things while they were already getting ready. It was time to leave for Skellige, but Madara was approached by Zoltan, who called out to him.
"Here, this is for you. Don't ask who sent it, but it seems someone important is interested in you, kid," the dwarf said, while Madara looked at the letter and opened it.
Inside, there was the location of a place within the city and a request for a meeting, which made Ciri worried, along with Yennefer.
"No one should know about you... Were you seen?" Geralt asked, eyes narrowing as they discussed the letter.
"It's alright. I'll go there. Just wait on the ship. I'll find out who really managed to discover my identity," Madara said.
