Chapter 228 - Dealing with the Dragons.
[Chapter Size: 2600 Words.]
Third Person POV
Redania.
...
...
The next day, early in the morning, Madara jumped over the house where they were staying, landing on the roof, as a flash appeared beside him.
It was Ciri, who had teleported, appearing next to him.
"Follow me," he simply said, as he began to run across the rooftop and leap to the next one.
Ciri looked at him and teleported, vanishing with a flash and reappearing with another, as Madara was already jumping to the third rooftop. She followed him, appearing on each house he advanced to.
And so they went, crossing the entire city to the northern part, leaping over the streets, while a few rare citizens who happened to look up at that moment saw someone jumping on the rooftops.
They pointed and exclaimed, but by the time more people tried to look, Madara had already vanished.
Madara stopped when he reached the edge of the city, where there was a large gap between the houses and the wall, as the wide roads allowed the entry of carts and large groups.
He was thinking about how to get across without drawing attention when Ciri appeared beside him.
"Come with me," she said as she touched his shoulder.
They vanished together and reappeared atop the wall.
Ciri quickly looked out to the outer part of the city, choosing a place to teleport to without being seen. They appeared among small houses, where residents lived on the outskirts of Novigrad.
"Very good." Madara praised her for that, while she looked at him with a cynical smile, expecting praise, and her smile widened at his comment.
"Put on your hood and let's continue on foot until we enter the forest," he said, and she nodded. They walked through the streets of the small village, hiding their faces, and took the road, traveling through the fields outside Novigrad until they reached the nearby forest.
Upon entering, Madara leapt into the trees and Ciri did the same, beginning to follow him again. They advanced at high speed to the north.
It didn't take long for them to find a large camp, after leaving the forest and continuing to run through the fields, which belonged to lands ruled by great nobles of Redania in this region.
Madara had carried Ciri in his arms to move faster across the open terrain. They found the camp full of soldiers from Novigrad and Redania itself.
"Leave this to me, I'll gather information before heading to the dragons," Madara simply said before advancing.
He entered the camp at nightfall and easily gathered all the information he needed, either through documents or by placing the main leaders under genjutsu.
Then, he returned to Ciri an hour after leaving. She was waiting in a hidden house near the adjacent forest, with clones keeping watch.
"So, the dragons are here?" Ciri asked as Madara approached.
"Yes. They're inside the forest. They made contact with a local hunter, and since then, the man informed some guards in the area, proving that they were indeed dragons. They even spoke with them. The men in Novigrad were called, and then the rumor started spreading like wildfire. It won't be long before the king hears about it too, through his," Madara said.
"But it's still recent. He would hear about it in Oxenfurt, if he's still there."
"And the dragons...?" Ciri asked.
"They're waiting for a response. Even though the camp is gathering many people to deal with a possible attack from them, which I highly doubt they can do much against dragons. Still, the dragons offered gold but don't want humans near them, so they drove everyone out of the forest. Which is good for us," he informed.
"What are we going to do?" Ciri asked.
"We'll go to them. After we eat something, I'll deal with them before they become a real nuisance," Madara said, as Ciri nodded.
"I prepared something. Let's eat," she said.
Madara ate the meal with her and, shortly after, they left the place, dispelling the wooden house and heading to the forest where the dragons had recently been. It didn't take long to find them. Madara could sense their presence with the Sharingan from kilometers away, even before entering that part of the forest.
They were in a rocky area, with a bunch of broken trees around, to make themselves comfortable while waiting for the humans to bring information about their target. They just didn't expect him to show up on his own that night.
One of the creatures was already getting uneasy when Madara approached with Ciri by his side. That triggered the dragons' instincts. Those who were napping immediately raised their heads and saw a pair of humans approaching. It took them a moment to realize who it was, not just another curious human poking around like the last ones...
"Wait..." the green dragon murmured, blinking as he woke after his companion. "Isn't that him?" he asked, while the gray dragon narrowed his eyes.
"It can't be... He's here!" said the gray dragon, almost unable to believe what he was seeing.
"So these are the dragons? They're huge..." Ciri murmured, surprised by the size of the creatures. Madara nodded, eyeing the dragons he had once chained in the valley.
"Yes. And to think they'd be so resentful after the fall of their kingdom in the human world. Perhaps I underestimated their pride," Madara commented, as he looked at Ciri. "Be careful. They're strong, have a natural toughness to their scales, and breathe fire—and they can fly. But they're not that fast. Use your powers to gain an edge among them. Especially your teleportation. Understood?" he instructed, and Ciri nodded.
"You're here, after all," the gray dragon roared again.
"And you're after me..." Madara mocked.
"Yes. Obviously! You humiliated us and left us trapped for hours back in our Valley. Now we're here for revenge. No human escapes after humiliating us!" Vornaxis began, with a speech full of pride.
"You talk too much... Anyway, let's get this over with," Madara said.
The dragon, without warning, opened his mouth and unleashed flames directly at Ciri and Madara, who were standing in front of him. The flames alone already had great reach.
Ciri teleported immediately, vanishing from the spot and reappearing several meters away, watching the flames pass by her and scorch the entire forest.
"You did well," Madara appeared, landing beside her. Pleased with her reaction.
These flames would clearly draw the attention of the camp outside the forest, but that wasn't a problem now. The dragon was already searching for them, along with the green dragon.
"Should I try to kill him?" Ciri said, drawing her sword and getting ready to fight.
Madara looked at the dragon and shook his head.
"Maybe you could, yes, but don't do it—I want to use them for something else," he said, and she nodded. "Either way, you can fight him. Just don't aim for the eyes or go for a fatal blow. And take this," he said, tossing her a kunai.
Ciri nodded, knowing it was a clone transformed into the object. If things got dangerous, he would help her in that moment.
She quickly began to glow before vanishing and reappearing on the head of the gray dragon. The green dragon, who was beside him, looked surprised. She simply pointed her palm downward, beginning to generate an extremely green light. When she fired, it was pure brute force — without any specific spell.
Immediately, the dragon Vornaxis felt the impact, his head being violently slammed into the ground. The green dragon, Ignavros, was immensely surprised by it, while the gray dragon let out a growl of pain from the blow.
Ciri found herself being attacked by the green dragon and teleported away from his flames. At the same time, she appeared behind both dragons.
"Damn... Who is this human?" the gray dragon roared, irritated.
"She can use magic," the green dragon muttered.
"Yes," Vornaxis said, sniffing the air until he sensed her behind them, and turning quickly, Ciri gave a smirk, then vanished, reappearing on Vornaxis's back and slashing his skin with her sword. But upon contact, she felt strong resistance. The sword trembled, and the cut was only superficial — it wasn't enough to hurt the dragon, but Vornaxis was furious. He had already been wounded by those skeletal-armored men.
He immediately turned to try to bite Ciri, who teleported and escaped.
She quickly began to toy with both dragons, emitting raw power from her energy or attempting to cut them, while they launched flames and tried to bite her. She teleported around them.
Madara kept his distance from the fight, analyzing the situation. He wanted her to develop the ability to control her power and adapt it to various situations. At that moment, Ciri already had a one-second glimpse into the future — able to see where attacks were coming from and move around accordingly. Although she didn't yet have full awareness of her surroundings, she glanced quickly wherever she could and launched her teleport, escaping attacks as she anticipated them, which frustrated the dragons.
She was doing very well, while the forest around them burned from the amount of fire being unleashed. And it was at that moment that she finally managed to wound Vornaxis's skin, channeling green energy into her sword and making a shallow cut on one of the dragon's arms.
The gray dragon roared again, quickly spewing fire in all directions, whipping his head around, while Ciri tried to dodge, teleporting. But the flames didn't stop, coming from every direction. She rose into the sky with a teleport as the area below burned, looking down with flames covering her entire vision, until the green dragon emerged from the fire, leaping to grab her and catching her off guard.
Ciri was about to be bitten as she opened her eyes in desperation, when the kunai in her pocket proved useful. In that exact instant, a cloud of smoke exploded in the air, and Madara appeared, kicking Ciri to the side to knock her out of reach of the attack, being the only one bitten by the green dragon — before exploding into smoke, as it was a clone.
Ciri took a deep breath, teleporting back to where the real Madara was, standing the whole time, watching. She was gasping, her breathing unsteady.
"Very good. Now leave the rest to me," he said, and Ciri nodded, tired after constantly dodging the dragons' attacks.
It was good training, from what Madara could observe. He then jumped as the gray dragon finally stopped spewing fire.
"She escaped... and that guy showed up, but it wasn't him... it was that strange magic of yours..." Ignavros muttered beside him.
"Damn... She hurt me... Wretched human!" the gray dragon roared in fury, until both saw someone land in front of them. They looked on in surprise as they saw Madara standing there, arms crossed.
"Well... I went easy on you when I invaded the valley. After all, I just wanted to explore the place. But since you insist on coming after me... Fine, let's end this," Madara said.
The gray dragon tried to respond, but suddenly saw Madara's eyes shift into a different pattern. Instantly, he froze, losing control of his mind.
"This human speaks as if he could kill us anytime he wanted..." Ignavros muttered, enraged by Madara's words, but then he noticed his companion was silent. He immediately looked at him, surprised to see his companion's eyes turn red like the human's. He was frozen in place.
"What happened?" Ignavros asked in shock. But there was no answer from the gray dragon.
"He's under a genjutsu," Madara replied calmly, and the dragon looked at him, seemingly frightened. Whatever Madara had done, he was controlling him.
Madara didn't care and kept his focus on the gray dragon, Vornaxis. He accessed the dragon's memories and indeed saw it had been the Wild Hunt that the two dragons had fought in the north of Kaedwen. Ironically, Vornaxis and Ignavros had killed almost all of them, leaving only the mage to escape.
In any case, Madara sent a command to the dragon. And under the genjutsu, he sent him to a place where there was a certain dwarf having trouble with his vault. Maybe causing a different kind of problem for them would be interesting, since legend says dragons love gold.
The gray dragon simply turned around and shot up into the night sky, vanishing, while the green dragon stood there, stunned. He looked at Madara, stepping back.
What he had just witnessed was far from normal. He had controlled his companion... an older... and more powerful dragon.
Then the green dragon simply tried to flee, but Madara quickly began forming hand signs as roots began to sprout from the ground, stopping him from escaping. The dragon tried to leap into the sky, but the roots pulled him back down, trapping his body and forcing his head to stay lifted, preventing him from breathing fire. He was left there, bound in a mass of giant roots and some vegetation.
"Well..." Madara jumped onto the dragon's back. "It's been a while..." he said calmly to the dragon. The dragon looked panicked, but remained trapped.
"Anyway, what's your name?" he asked.
"..." The dragon said nothing, only staring in fear.
Madara simply gave a small smile. "Do you want me to control you like I did your friend?" he threatened.
"No!" the green dragon replied immediately, his voice clearly betraying his fear.
"Well, let's do this... I'll let you live, and you'll return to the Valley. You're going to say your companion simply wanted to travel alone. He'll be gone for quite a while, while you will have a summoning contract with me. I'll call you when I need a bigger and more powerful bird. Alright?" Madara asked calmly, while fear still gleamed in the green dragon's eyes.
In the end, Ciri watched everything unfold a few meters away. The green dragon was released after speaking with Madara — or rather, after receiving his threats. Madara unrolled a scroll on the ground and made the dragon sign it with his own blood after freeing him, sealing the summoning contract without actually controlling him, just intimidating the dragon who didn't want to die.
"Now you can go," Madara said.
And the dragon didn't think twice before turning around and shooting into the sky, unaware of the exact details of the contract that now bound him as Madara's summon.
He was likely heading after his companion, but would be unable to bring him back to the Valley of Dragons. Instead, Vornaxis would head to the dwarven mountain and take over the vault as the last monster there, after the dwarf tried to deceive him. That would be the punishment Madara imposed on them.
"You did what I think you did?" Ciri murmured, already knowing a bit about summoning contracts.
"Yes. I didn't do it the first time I met you, but thinking about it... My griffin has its uses for being small. But a dragon is faster and more powerful. When I need him, he'll be useful for traveling long distances... or having someone to light a campfire," he replied with a rare joke.
Ciri looked at him, raising an eyebrow, wondering if he was really summoning a dragon in the future just to light a campfire.
