(From Blue's Perspective)

Evelyn's mouth did not form any word. But her eyes did. And for some reason, those eyes seemed to be speaking to me only. I looked at Merick to see if he could understand what I could, if he could see what I saw in her eyes. But he showed nothing of that sorts. He stared back at me helplessly, his eyes pleading me to help his wife.

I beckoned him towards me with a wave of my hand. He came over to me.

"Can you go out for a while? I need to see closely and it would be better if… it's just the two of us," I said.

"Do you think she can be fixed?"

"Honestly, Merick, I have no idea. But I promise you that I will give my best."

His lips were pressed into a thin line. It was obvious that he blamed me for what happened to his wife. I could not blame him for that. He was right to blame me. It was my fault. All of it was my fault.

Reece's death was my fault. Evelyn's condition was my fault.

"Merick?" I pressed.

He nodded and left without glancing back. I stood there for a second, feeling unsure as to what to do.

"Perita, take all the guards and leave this room. I want to be alone with Evelyn," I said.

Perita looked like she was about to protest, but stopped, probably seeing the look on my face.

I locked the door after they left. Evelyn looked so empty, as if she was soulless.

I went to her a little timidly. It was so stupid of me to do that. It was not like she could hurt me.

As soon as I was in arm's length in front of her, she grabbed my arm and pulled me towards her. Our heads almost banged against each other.

"Blue!" she said my name in a gasp as if she could not believe I was there. Or maybe, it was a warning. But what kind of warning?

"Gosh, Evelyn. Are you okay?"

"My daughter. He took my daughter." Now she was yelling. I heard some commotion outside and within a while, Merick was in the room, Perita behind him. She was trying to pull him out of the room with the help of two other knights. But Merick seemed to have turned into a stone statue. He could not be moved.

"Did she just talk?" Merick asked, shell-shocked.

But Evelyn's eyes were on mine, her nails digging into the flesh of my arm.

"Ava, Blue! He took Ava!"

"When?" I ask. I felt like I could not breathe.

"It was an exchange, Blue. He said you exchanged her for me."

"What?"

"Is it true, Blue? Did you exchange her for me?" she asked. She was shaking me now.

"No, gosh, no. Why would I ever do that?" I shake her hand off and step back. I felt dizzy. "I would never…"

"He said you told him that you wanted me back and he could have anyone else."

"I never said that!" I cry. "I never…" My hands were shaking. "I can never do that to your child. Ava is like my child too. How can I ever do that?"

Evelyn was crying too. I did not notice when Merick wrapped his arms around her. My head was spinning and I saw darkness in my vision. Someone grabbed me by my shoulder and steadied me.

"Let's go."

"No. Ava…"

"You need to lie down. You are dizzy, aren't you?"

I glared at my husband. "What will you know?" I snapped. "Fuck you, Dem and fuck everyone! You never should have married me! Never!"

I pushed him away and I almost fell instantly. I felt lighter somehow.

Dem grabbed my arm now, not so gently. "Don't be ridiculous," he whispered into my ear. "If you keep blaming yourself, I will tie you up and lock you in a room. You don't want that, do you?"

"I am more powerful than you."

"I can still tie you up."

I knew what he was thinking. Damn him. He was thinking about using my children against me.

"Come with me," he said and I did not fight him this time.

Doctor Dimitri was summoned immediately after we reached the palace. I lost consciousness for five seconds in Dem's arms, then came back to reality. In our room, I screamed and screamed. Dion and Demian started crying too and it soon turned into a chaos. I was screaming and thrashing so much that Dem had to push my down on the bed and press his palm against my mouth.

I bit him, drawing blood, but he did not let me go.

I calmed down after a while and went limp in his grip. It was something between consciousness and unconsciousness.

The question remained- why did Evelyn stop talking? It was simple. Azure put a spell on her so she could only talk when I was there. Only then the spell would break. That was why she could not tell anyone else what happened.

Azure wanted me to hear it first. Azure wanted me to see Evelyn losing her trust in me and blaming me. He wanted me to break down, just like I did. I hated myself for it.

I hated myself more for ruining the lives around me. I hated myself for being selfish.

I would go to Azure. That was what I would do. I would go to him and I would do whatever he wanted me to do, in exchange for the lives of the people I cared about. He wanted me initially, did he not? He surely would listen if I offered myself to him.

I would leave the kids with Dem. I could not risk Azure hurting them.

Yes, that was what I would do. I would leave everyone. My husband, my sons, my friends. I had to do it for their sake. I had to.
