The Werewolf King's Bride

Chapter 597: Evelyn Is Back

(From Blue's Perspective)

I walked as fast as I could with a maid right in front of me. My heart was pounding with both excitement and anger. I was angry at Dem for not telling me sooner and even preventing the maids from telling me before I got ready. What kind of logic did his order have? Did he think I would run to Evelyn naked?

The maid brought me to Demetrius's office instead.

"If you were going to bring me here, why didn't you just say so? I know the damn way!"

"My apologies, Your Highness," the maid said and moved away.

I pushed the door open, without bothering to knock. I was so angry that I could even break that door down if I found it locked. Well, Dem never locked it unless I was there with him and we were doing something we definitely should not do in his office.

Dem was there with the boys.

I would have slammed the door shut if Demian was not sleeping. Instead, I let the door shut behind me slowly without making any noise. If Demian started crying now, I would lose my mind.

"Why the hell…?"

"I had my reason," Dem said before I could finish.

"Oh, do entertain me with that great reason of yours," I said, crossing my arms over my chest. Dion was watching us. He had never seen us fight so openly. More clearly, he had never seen me so angry.

Perhaps I should send him to another room. But really, I did not have the patience for that. I needed his father to give me a reason, just one reason, which I knew he could never give me. No reason would be enough to justify his actions.

"Evelyn is back, but she… she can't speak," he said.

"What?"

"She can't speak," he repeated.

"Is her tongue…?" I clap a hand over my mouth.

Dem shook his head. "That's not the case. It's just as simple as being mute. She is mute. I mean, I am hoping her tongue is not gone. We can't know because she is not opening her mouth.

Merick tried, but she won't."

Knowing Azure, he was totally capable of cutting someone's tongue just because he felt like it.

"There is no evidence of physical or sexual violence," he added.

I was not worried about Azure sexually abusing Evelyn, but someone else might. Someone like Lloid who tried to rape me. What if Cyan did not help me? Thinking about the possibility made me shudder.

"What happened to her, Dem? I swear if you don't tell me clearly…"

"I don't know, Blue. Don't you think I would have told you if I knew that? She is just silent, like a fucking doll. I don't know, she ain't moving or anything. She is just sitting there. Merick said he will talk to her for a while and see if she gives any reaction.

He requested to be left alone for the time being," Dem said.

"Can I see her now? How long ago are we talking about? Where did you find her?"

"In her bedroom," he said. "Merick found her in her bedroom. He said he went there for a while and there she was, on the bed. The maids confirmed that she hadn't been there even an hour ago."

"When did it happen?"

"Three hours ago."

"I want to see her."

"Well, you can do that. I can take care of the kids."

"Dem, you won't go to see your sister?"

"I went to see her."

"She is your sister, Dem. If not for yourself, do it for me and the kids. Set a good example for the kids. Siblings look after each other."

"Yeah, your brother did that very well."

He did not have to clarify who he was talking about. He was not talking about Maxen or Cyan. Dem was talking about Draven, knowing very well how I felt about stuff like this.

"Fine, suit yourself!"

I stormed out of the room without looking back. He never talked to me like that. What happened to my loving husband?

At least for the kids, he could act a little better. He could at least pretend to care about his sister. It did not matter whether Dion or Demian might not remember any of this. None of that mattered. He was being an asshole and that was what mattered.

I summoned Perita to take me to Evelyn. It had been a few days since I last saw her. She looked healthier somehow. She had cut her hair again. Now, it was barely an inch from her scalp.

"Lady Evelyn has gone mute, I heard."

"From who?"

"Ruby."

"Lady Ruby," I corrected.

"Yes. Lady Ruby. I went to the magic tower, you know, just because I was bored. Lord Luc went to the side palace, she told me."

"Is Luc still there?"

"I don't think so. I saw him going back to the magic tower a while ago."

"Alright."

"Are you alright, Your Highness?"

"Fine." 'Except for the fact that my husband was mean to me today, which almost never happens. It was not even because of his obsession. He was mean because he intended to hurt me, which hurts me more. If he hurt me unknowingly, it would be one thing. But today, he did that on purpose. And it really hurts.'

Even then, I had no idea what to expect when I would see Evelyn. One thing was clear. Her condition surpassed everything I anticipated. It was worse. Really worse. What made her condition dangerous was the fact that only I could see what was wrong with her.

And perhaps Cyan. If she could be fixed, only I and Cyan could do that. But I only saw what was wrong with her. I could only see, not understand. What was I supposed to do about something that I did not even understand?

Knowing Azure, he knew that I was at a fix.
