Chapter 16: Howling Spell
Ewuuuuuuu! The wolves howled as the moon was emerging gradually from the sky. The sun had finished it's duty for the day and had retired. It was then time for the largest heavenly star to take over. As it appeared the werewolves shifted to their wolf form as they howled from their individual homes. From the largest werewolves to the youngest, they all marched to the top of the mountain were they often did their moon ceremony.
The lights all went out and the only illumination that could be seen was from the moon.
The palace was not exempted from this, as all of the torch holders were blown out. King Cashito saw the full reflection of the moon from the cup of water he wanted to have and couldn't help but be filled with the energy drawn from the moon.
He quickly gulped down the water and shifted form, from that point he jumped out of the window. Queen Sabrina sensing that her mate had left the palace, she also shifted and leapt out of the window.
Tahira was the only one left in the castle. She wasn't ready to leave just yet. She wasn't sure if she was ready for the moon dance. She knew the dance wasn't just a normal dance but was also a ritual. She
looked out of the window and thought of the event that happened that night few weeks back. She hadn't mentioned it to anyone just yet.
She kept the locket safe and had been going round the village in disguise, looking to see a similar face but she had been without luck.
One time she had to show someone the locket to ask around but they had said that they didn't know who that was. It was almost as if this person didn't exist.
She looked out if the window and felt the powerful energy from the moon. But, weirdly she never felt like going in her wolf form. It was true that a lot of energy seeped through her but her wolf form wasn't ready to show.
Grabbing her dance dress, she set off on foot to the mountain top, not a bad night for hiking Yeah? She thought. The darkness of the night only made one to appreciate the moon at night. She could hear the howling from afar. She could also hear the drum beats. She really loved the moon but that night didn't really feel right to her.
Soon enough she got to the mountain top but the unison howling had already started. All the werewolves sat on their hind limbs and howled to the moon. It was really a music to the ears.
She looked up to the moon and was entrapped. She was mesmerized and was as if she was under a spell. The all of a sudden, she felt the moon energy was about to erupt from her body as she felt overwhelmed in a matter of seconds she shifted form and started the howling spell. The Spell was so loud and different like it commanded the whole werewolfdom. A music to the soul. This made all of the werewolves to stop and turn listen.
Tahira herself was no longer in charge of her body. It was like something else had taken over her and she was simply a vessel.
The younger werewolves felt like this was a very strange howl that sounded so beautiful. But, the elderly werewolves including the king widened their eyes in shock.
No one had ever listened to the howling spell, it was only told that it was a special howl that came whenever a big occurrence was coming, whether good or bad.
The Spell hadn't been howled in more than a hundred years. But, the elderly had been sure to tell their children all about it.The howl was called a spell because it compelled them to do things against their will. At this point, it only made them all fixated and the direction of the howl.
The werewolf that howled could not clearly be seen as it was covered with a moon like fog.
At that time the healer came around as she had also heard the howl. Now standing in between the howl and the rest of the werewolves who were now looking in the same direction.
As she finished the howl energy seeped out of her and she fell to the ground, her red eyes which had shone while she howled gently closed down.
The healer quickly approached her and muttered some things on her body. King Cashito and Queen Sabrina noticing that the werewolf that howled was Tahira also stepped forward to the place. Queen Sabrina shifted form and carried Tahira while she felt her pulse. Just at that same time, Tahira opened her eyes to see her mother's face in a panicked state.
"Mother", she said subtly.
"Did I fall from the dance?" She added.
Her mother muffled up laughter from her worried face.
"Not yet silly, the dance hasn't even begun", Queen Sabrina said.
"What happened?" Queen Sabrina asked the healer, looking up to her face. But, the healer didn't answer but simply looked at the king who was now in his human form and cleared her throat.
Noticing that it wasn't something they wanted to discuss there, she decided to let the matter drop.
She looked at Tahira again and asked, "how do you feel my dear? It's time for the dance, do you think you can do the dance?" She asked with concern. While holding up Tahira who was still on the floor.
"Yes mother, I still get to wear that dress" she said. She said with a smile on her face.
"Alright get dressed" she said as she helped her up.
As soon as Tahira had gone out to change, Queen Sabrina walked to king Cashito and said to him in a low tone. "I deserve an explanation too."
Soon the moon dance began and the dancers entered first. They danced and then Tahira began her performance. As they danced all of the werewolves focused on the performance before them. They had chosen the top of the mountain for the dance and that had created quite an imagery for the performance of the dance.
The moon towered above the dancers and the dancers looked like tiny flowers dancing beneath the moon. The dance continued led by Tahira. She had lost a bit of energy when she had been howling the spell. But dancing now under the moon brought in more energy to her.
Somewhere in pack, a lot of eyes were on her. Some with jealousy, while some with admiration. But, deep into the forest, a pair of eyes stared at her. One couldn't tell whether it was with admiration, hatred or jealousy. The eyes didn't for once leave her from the beginning to the finish of the dance.
