Chapter 172: Weak Dragon
His change of mind was simple.
How was he ever to grow if he never fought people who were strong? It had been a long time since he had tested himself against an opponent strong enough.
They flew through the wooden stage, their weapons clashing with metallic sounds and sparks.
The severance in Vacuse's umbrella couldn't cut through her spear as he wanted. The spear seemed to be an artifact weapon of some sort.
"Ohohoh! Dragon heir! Why are you running? Wait, let's fight!"
Indeed, Vacuse was on the offensive, giving her space as they clashed and running now and then.
She grinned loudly, her face lighting up with a strange light of cruelty.
Suddenly she raised her spear up, drawing it back as if she were holding a sword. A strange energy ran from her into the spear and gathered at the very tip.
The energy was a destructive lightning.
"Dragon's art, flash!"
She brought the spear down, and... flung it! The spear screamed through the air, then disappeared in a flash of dark light that left only torn wind in its wake.
All Vacuse felt was a moment of incredible danger; he couldn't even see the attack. He stopped running and twisted, opening the umbrella to cover himself!
Bam!
The spear appeared in a flash of explosive force and collided with the umbrella with such force that the ground beneath them cracked into splinters, and spiderweb cracks appeared on his weapon, as if waiting to shatter!
Vacuse himself was thrown back with such viciousness, almost out of the stage, but he held on with gritted teeth, ramming his umbrella down to stab the stage.
His body was awash with pain, especially his hands. His bones seemed to have taken some damage.
She... is strong.
'...much stronger than she should be. She must have adjusted her level of power to be above me. This bastard...'
She gestured and the spear returned to her, disappearing and reappearing in a flash of black light. "What do you think? This is the Black Dragon Martial Art that was created. It draws its power from the blood.
"Directly from the remaining Dragon blood in this poor tainted bastard. The purer the blood, the more power they could draw and the fewer the side effects.
"They draw out the destructive force in the blood. After all, Dragons are creatures of destruction. This is the real primitive power of a Dragon!"
Vacuse's face was cold as well.
Inwardly, though, he felt a little bit of shock. '...Rith, is she speaking the truth...'
The Void Dragon sighed. '...she is... just like the Dragon's perception, the art is like it...'
'...and you never told me!..' Vacuse struggled to keep his face under tight control.
Rith was silent for a long time.
'...that was because it is an Initiate ability of the Dragons. It's like telling you how to breathe...'
Vacuse slowly digested that, then he looked at Blood Spike. "So this is why you are here."
She smiled and shrugged. "I've watched you, Dragon heir. You are strong, but you are not. For all the strength you have, the level is that of the S-ranked of the second stage at least.
"The difference between S and SS is like the heavens and the land. SSS is even almost unimaginable, and yet how are you using your powers?
"You should be stronger, but you are not. You are nothing but a false Dragon! The Great Dungeon will take you."
Vacuse smiled with coldness. "Didn't you say you would kill me yourself here if I was weaker?"
She scowled, then shrugged. "That seed... it will be best if it comes from you, but it will be best if it comes from someone with the real zeal to make use of their potential!"
That struck Vacuse and he flinched.
Make use... hadn't he been?
Suddenly his face grew solemn.
And he looked at her. "Tell me the truth... how strong are you now?"
"I am at the level of SS-ranked. Of a powerful pathway like the Dragon."
"Very well. Then, Blood Spike. Let us fight."
The air around him had grown cold and serious.
One advantage that his SSS rank provided was that at any given stage, the energy in the Soul Space was abnormally high. Very high.
So he raised his left hand and the Void energy appeared, but it was not liquid or forming into near solid shapes. Instead, it was a bundle of countless threads that wiggled like worms.
The bundle unraveled, curling around his limbs, but they passed through his body as if it were transparent.
And in the blink of an eye, the bundle grew so big that it covered half of the stage. "Now... this is my fight."
Blood Spike came closer to the threads and stared at them, a deep frown on her face. She soon realized that the threads were not the same. Some looked like sharp swords, others like tattered drifting shadows, while the last looked translucent.
It was as if they were all strands of the same thing.
"Why are they like this? Do you think a pretty trick like this...!!"
Suddenly her eyes widened.
She brought her spear down on the threads, but it simply bounced off.
The threads were just as strong as any weapon, and she would have to exert strength to cut them. However, when she looked at the countless threads, her face darkened.
Vacuse smiled. "You've watched me? Then you must have missed something very important. It's not that I don't want to fight. It's that there haven't been any opportunities to fight!
"My opponents are usually too weak or too strong. Or just strong. Nothing for me to bring my full force to bear!"
Instead of replying, she stabbed her spear deep into the stage. Black light of destruction danced above her skin.
The dark light glanced off her skin, turning into small dark orbs of destruction.
Then her eyes grew sharp as if she could see through the pattern of the threads.
She smiled. "Dragon's art, flash!"
Suddenly the orbs shot forward with explosive speed, but instead of just ramming through, they curved and turned, ignoring the threads and then... straight at Vacuse.
