Chapter 155: Meeting I
Drenvar was going to hold his first court.
And it was held in the main hall of the Red Leaves.
The remaining eleven Commanders, Skya Vorrakyn, and the General Commanders were all there. Vacuse was also there. He sat down at his father's right-hand side on the throne-like seat.
The Dragon Lord's face was impassive as he stared at the closed court attendants.
Vacuse noticed that all the people that gathered were the military power and none of the Lords.
Drenvar nodded. "Welcome, all of you. We have won the war, all right. But now comes another difficult task of holding the Region. Already we have begun crushing small resistance, but it will only grow as time goes on.
"We need to return this Region to stability as fast as we can."
The room sank into silence.
Skya was the first to speak. "Why should we worry about resistance? What we need to do is just crush them thoroughly. If any town or city resists, just use the War Artifact to wipe them out once and for all. Nobody will try anything after that."
Vacuse grimaced when he heard that.
There was a problem with the War Artifact, the Unifier Sword. And that was because only the Orcs could use it, most especially those with Warbine blood.
The reason Vacuse was able to use it was that he used the Artifact, the consumable Artifact that he found in the Dungeon on his way to the Warbine territory, to forcefully mimic the bloodline of the family.
He used Valka's blood to activate the Artifact.
Which meant there was a limited amount of time that he could use the Artifact before his blood reverted back to normal.
Drenvar knew this as well, and his face darkened. At most they had no more than two weeks before Vacuse would not be able to use the War Artifact again.
The weeks before things became sour again.
"We can't use the War Artifact to tackle all of our problems. This Region is ours. Destroying things will only end up backfiring, as we can lose the resources that we have."
The Dragon Lord turned to Vacuse. "Tell me your ideas."
Vacuse knew that Drenvar was dragging him into things because he wanted to train him for the future. He nodded and inclined his head. "First, we need to put some things behind us.
"I think we should do what we did in Kragthar. First, we wipe out all the families of the Dukes. If we let them live, then it is only natural that they come back to fight us.
"They will become willing tools for others to use and a face for any resistance. We need to wipe them out."
The reason why Vacuse was thinking that way was simple. If it were him, he would also revolt against the Dragons and look for ways to bring them down.
The General Commander's face lit up. "Yes. I like this idea better than trying to look for loyal family members to pass the title to. We need to strike while the iron is still hot. We are already in the water. Why should we be afraid of getting mud on us?"
Skya frowned. "Won't that make the people angry? No matter how you look at this, the Dukes have been ruling their territory for years. The people there will not be pleased if you just wipe their families out like that."
Vacuse frowned. It was the truth. If it was not managed properly, then it might turn into a bonfire that sweeps the whole Region. They also had to factor in the fact that others would take advantage of the situation to turn things against them.
Drenvar turned to look at Vacuse with his brows raised as if implying, 'See? As a ruler, you have to think things through and work with your brain. Do not be hasty.'
Vacuse grimaced. "Then what are we going to do?"
Drenvar shifted in his seat. "We will take a bit of both. Of the Dukes' families, we will kill most of them and leave the others to rule their family and the territory.
"But I will control things. How their resources will be spent and their forces, Soulbearers, and all will join the standard Regional Army that will be created.
"I will bring them directly under the Grand Duke."
Vacuse blinked. "That can work too."
Drenvar smiled. "For now, we will keep things as they are. Also, we will not keep their forces in their territories. We will change them. But they are not our biggest issue.
"The biggest issue is the Silent War."
Vacuse sat up. Silent War? This was the first time he had heard of something like that.
"Silent War is the type of war the Regions fight to keep other Regions in check. As open war is forbidden by the Emperor, they could only resort to that."
Drenvar smiled. "To be clear, there is already a Silent War on the Region. Why do you think the Dukes did not see eye to eye? Why do you think the Dukes got access to the Black Accord?
"In fact, there are rumors that the Black Accord rose to this position due to the Silent War carried out by the powerful nobles, and they use the organization as a way to battle each other."
The General Commander grunted. "Each Region and powerful nobles are said to have a wing in the Black Accord, and some are even members."
Vacuse narrowed his eyes. "But why? Are we not an Empire? Why all of that?"
Drenvar shrugged. "We are. But we are also Soulbearers and humans. We will always be greedy for more power. If the Emperor became weaker today, another would rise in his place and the Empire would be torn down. This is the way the world is."
Vacuse did not say anything. But he understood. In fact, he had lived and supported the world in that way. "So how are we going to win the Silent War?
"If we keep foiling their plans, they would only make other plans."
"Then what do you suggest?" Drenvar asked.
"We strike them back as fast as we can and give a clear warning. Dragon Lord, the Western Region is entering the stage again. We should let the world know that we do not want any interference in our Region."
