Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Web of Fate.
Tony Stark wasn't happy.
I sat in the corner of his lab at Stark Tower, tapping my fingers nervously against the table while he examined the symbiote canister. The black substance inside pulsed, shifting like it was alive.
"You had one job, kid," Tony muttered, tapping a few keys on his holographic console. "Sneak in, get intel, and not get nearly killed by supervillains. Was that so hard?"
I scratched the back of my head. "To be fair, I did get the intel… and only almost got killed."
Tony shot me a look. "Not funny. You're in over your head." I sighed. "I know. But what else am I supposed to do? These guys aren't going to just stop if I sit back and watch."
Tony leaned against the table, studying me. "I get it, Parker. You want to help people. That's noble. But you need to be smart about it."
He turned back to the symbiote and frowned. "And this… this is a whole other level of nightmare fuel."
I crossed my arms. "What do we do with it?"
"Contain it, study it, and definitely don't let it touch you," Tony replied, reinforcing the canister with a locking mechanism. "This thing could turn a mild-mannered scientist into a rage-filled monster. You? You'd turn into an unstoppable mess."
I gulped. "Right. No touching. Got it."
Just then, an alert flashed across the screen.
[BREAKING NEWS: Oscorp CEO Norman Osborn issues public statement denying criminal allegations.]
The screen flickered to footage of Osborn, standing at a press conference, his voice calm and calculated. "The recent accusations against Oscorp are baseless," he said smoothly. "We remain dedicated to innovation and progress. Spider-Man's vigilante interference has only hindered our efforts to improve the city."
I groaned. "Oh come on! He's turning this around on me?!"
Tony smirked. "Welcome to PR warfare, kid."
Later that night, I was back on patrol.
The city was quieter than usual, but I knew it wouldn't last. As I swung past Times Square, Karen's voice chimed in my ear.
"Peter, I'm detecting movement near the Oscorp testing facility. Potential hostile activity."
I sighed. "Of course there is."
Arriving at the facility, I landed quietly on the rooftop and peeked through the skylight. Inside, several men in tactical gear were unloading crates marked "Oscorp Experimental" into black vans.
A familiar, unpleasant voice rang out. "Hurry it up. We don't have all night." Shocker.
I narrowed my eyes. Time to crash this little party.
Dropping down silently, I webbed one of the guards to a crate before he could even yell. "Hey, fellas. Stealing from your own company? That's low, even for you."
Shocker whirled around, gauntlets glowing. "Spider-Man! Should've known you'd stick your nose where it doesn't belong."
I smirked. "It's kind of my thing." Before he could react, I webbed his hands to his chest, yanking him off balance. "Wow, still using the same old tricks, huh? I was hoping for an upgrade."
Shocker growled and ripped through the webbing with a blast. "I got upgrades, alright!"
He fired a concussive shockwave that sent me flying into a wall. I groaned, peeling myself off the concrete. "Okay… that hurt."
The other goons opened fire, and I flipped over them, dodging bullets and firing webs to disarm them. One by one, they fell, but Shocker wasn't going down easy.
He charged at me, sending another blast my way. I dodged it at the last second and webbed his feet to the ground.
"You should really switch to non-lethal weapons," I quipped. "Just a thought!"
With one final web yank, I slammed him into a pile of crates, knocking him out cold.
Karen chimed in. "All hostiles neutralized. NYPD en route."
I grinned. "Another win for the friendly neighborhood—"
But then my spider-sense went wild.
Before I could react, a flash of green soared past me. I barely had time to dodge before a pumpkin bomb exploded where I had been standing moments ago.
I looked up and my heart sank.
Green Goblin.
"Having fun, Spider-Man?" Osborn sneered from his glider, eyes glowing with malice. I swallowed hard. "You again? Don't you have, like, a board meeting to attend?"
He laughed maniacally. "I have better things to do… like breaking you."
He dove at me, and I leaped to the side, firing webs to slow him down. He dodged with terrifying ease, launching another barrage of bombs. I swung through the wreckage, my mind racing.
I had to get out of here—fast.
"Karen, exit plan?" "North alley, three blocks ahead."
I webbed my way toward the escape route, but Goblin wasn't letting up. He was relentless, hurling explosives and taunts in equal measure.
"You're just a kid playing hero, Parker!" he sneered.
"Yeah, well… someone's gotta do it!" I shot back, webbing onto a passing truck and escaping into the distance.
I didn't stop swinging until I was far enough away to breathe. My heart was hammering in my chest. Goblin wasn't playing anymore. This was war.
The next morning…
I staggered into school, barely able to keep my eyes open. MJ was waiting for me by my locker.
"You look like death, Parker," she said, concerned. "Seriously, what's going on?"
I forced a smile. "Just… busy with life, you know?"
MJ's eyes softened. "You can talk to me, you know. Whatever it is, I've got your back."
I hesitated, looking at her. Maybe it was time to tell her the truth. Maybe I didn't have to do this alone.
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed. A message from Tony.
[STARK:] We need to talk. Big stuff. Don't be late.
I sighed. "Yeah, MJ. I know."
That evening, I found myself in Stark's lab again, staring at the symbiote canister. Tony folded his arms. "Osborn's doubling down. Whatever he's planning… it's big."
I nodded. "Yeah, and I think I might be in over my head."
Tony smirked. "Kid, you're definitely in over your head. But lucky for you, you've got me."
I smiled faintly. "Thanks, Mr. Stark."
He patted my shoulder. "Don't thank me yet. We've still got a long way to go."
I looked out the window at the New York skyline.
No turning back now.
