Chapter 22: Zebraem, Guilty
Nine hundred years later, after achieving countless glorious victories, Zebraem continued the Legion's plans relatively smoothly, despite some major upheavals. In a large hall inside Renacer, a trial was taking place. Standing at the highest position in the hall was Diego, with the Marshals lined up in two rows below him, and a figure kneeling in the center.
Diego: Do you accept this judgment... Zebraem?
Going back a few hours earlier, Diego had summoned Zebraem to a room. Diego was sitting at his desk, surrounded by piles of papers, as Zebraem walked in.
Diego: I have something for you to handle, Zeb. This task is extremely important; it must be completed with absolute precision, no mistakes allowed.
Diego handed Zebraem a piece of paper.
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): Understood.
Zebraem nodded in agreement and left to immediately carry out the task. He was instructed to go to a human village, destroy it in a large radius of several kilometers, and ensure no one survived.
When he arrived, looking down at the village below, Zebraem decided to cast Flaming Rain, creating a storm of fireballs about 1 meter in radius, which fell directly onto the village.
Zebraem (Zeb): "What are you doing? Why are you burning this place down!?"
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "I was ordered to do this."
Zebraem (Zeb): "What? Was it Diego's command?" (he felt a pang of guilt in his heart)
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "This is a critical task. If you don't want to watch, retreat deep within, and I'll handle everything."
After the Flaming Rain ended, no trace of the village remained. But Zebraem noticed something moving at the edge of the scorched ground.
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "There seems to be something."
Zebraem descended slowly, approaching the movement. As he got close enough to see clearly, Zebraem realized it was a girl, someone he vaguely recognized.
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "Maria's descendant? She really does resemble her."
He extended his hand toward the girl, intending to kill her, but his hand started trembling uncontrollably.
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "What are you doing, Zeb?! Don't interfere with me!"
Zebraem (Zeb): "You can't kill this girl. I can't witness this again."
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "This is necessary for our desire. Once it's all over, Aykon will grant your every wish. Isn't that what you want?"
Zebraem (Zeb): "I... I..."
Zebraem raised his hand towards the girl, intending to end her life, but suddenly a red light emanated from her chest. A necklace with a red pendant began to rise into the air.
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "What the...?!!"
Zebraem (Zeb): "Is it that thing?!!"
The girl was enveloped in that red light and suddenly disappeared before Zebraem's eyes.
Zebraem (Dark Zebraem): "That's the thing I took from the tower before, damn it!!! What on earth is its power?!!! Aaaaah!!!!"
Back to the present moment.
Diego: Do you accept this judgment... Zebraem?
Elena: Lord Diego, this was an unfortunate accident. Please don't impose such a severe punishment.
Ralanka: I agree!
Diego: DIDN'T YOU HEAR WHAT I JUST SAID?!!! THAT GIRL IS THE REASON HE HAD TO DESTROY THE ENTIRE VILLAGE!!! Yet due to some ridiculous mistake, he allowed this to happen. She is the key, a crucial anomaly in many future events. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? ZEBRAEM has committed a crime that could affect the overall outcome of everything.
Dande: Please, for all that Lord Zebraem has contributed over the centuries, reduce his punishment, I beg you!
Diego: Contributions? Do you even know what you're saying, DANDE?
Diego: Everything you've done up until now has been for yourselves. You made your own choices and decided to walk this path. Everything you have achieved contributes to the desires, dreams, and wishes that you will receive when all is over. And you call that "contributions"?
Dande bowed his head, feeling very distressed, but there was nothing more he could do. He clenched his teeth and tightened his fists to release some of the tension.
Kon: Say something, Zebraem. Are you really going to accept this without protest?
Zebraem remained kneeling, head bowed, not lifting it even a little.
Poseidon: Zebraem has always carried out his duties flawlessly, never neglecting even the smallest detail. There must be a reason this happened. Defend yourself, Zebraem. I believe you are not someone who would carelessly allow such a mistake to occur.
Zebraem (Zeb): I… have failed. There's nothing to defend.
Diego: Very well!! So, you accept your punishment. Take him away!!!!!
As the soldiers entered to escort Zebraem out, all the Marshals knelt simultaneously, pleading for his pardon.
Elena: Please, Lord Diego. This was an unintended mistake.
Loigan: I agree. This punishment is too harsh for any of us.
Diego: That punishment is a reminder to all of you. It serves to remind you why you stand here, why you walk this path, and why you serve under Aykon.
Poseidon: If this affects our desires and aspirations, and Zebraem is being punished so harshly for it, wouldn't it be enough for us to simply pardon him?
Diego: What did you say? Poseidon (Diego's voice tightened)
All: WE ALL AGREE TO PARDON LORD ZEBRAEM'S MISTAKE. WE WILL NOT PURSUE IT!!!!
Diego: All of you?
All: WE ALL BEG YOU!!!!
Diego remained silent for a moment, then spoke.
Diego: Very well, if all of you feel this way, then... I will not enforce that punishment.
Everyone felt a sense of relief.
Diego: But this will not end here. You will have a new task, Zebraem.
After hearing the task assigned to Zebraem, everyone was shocked. They couldn't believe what they had just heard.
Elena: This task is no different from that punishment, it's even worse! Why?
Ralanka: Exactly, this is absurd.
Diego: I have granted all your requests. This task is relatively lenient for him. If he does not accept it, we will stick to the original decision. This is a concession for all of you.
Elena: Lord Zebraem.
Dande: Lord Zebraem.
Zebraem (Zeb): I... accept... this task.
